Paul Lucas receives British Empire Medal
==========================
One of the driving forces behind the creation of Haverfordwest High VC School has been honoured with the British Empire Medal.
Mr Paul Lucas received his insignia from His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Dyfed, Miss Sara Edwards, at a special ceremony at County Hall, Haverfordwest, on Monday, January 20th.
Mr Lucas was named in the New Year Honours for services to education and charity in Pembrokeshire.
Mr Lucas was Chairman of Governors at the newly created Haverfordwest High VC School at the time of its official opening by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal in 2022.
Mr Lucas oversaw the amalgamation of the former Sir Thomas Picton and Tasker Milward schools into Haverfordwest High and the building of the fantastic new school on the former Sir Thomas Picton site.
Hosting the event, the Chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council Cllr Steve Alderman noted that many, many thousands of students for decades to come will enjoy first class educational facilities at the new school, thanks to the dedication of Mr Lucas.
His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Dyfed, Miss Sara Edwards, said: “On behalf of His Majesty The King, it was an honour and an enormous privilege to present Mr Paul Lucas with the British Empire Medal.
“Mr Lucas has provided incredible service to Pembrokeshire and Haverfordwest in particular and has been a driving force for educational improvement. His work will have a lasting legacy for future generations.”
Assisting the Lord-Lieutenant for the ceremony was Lord-Lieutenant Cadet Sergeant Mariana Lemon.
Also in attendance for the special occasion were the Leader of Pembrokeshire County Council, Cllr Jon Harvey; the High Sheriff of Dyfed, Helen Jones, and Deputy Lieutenant of Dyfed, Col Martin Green, along with Mr Lucas’ family and invited guests.

WHO'S THAT DOG?

Zorro is a 2½ yr old Karakachan (Bulgarian Shepherd) boy who is looking for a new home through no fault of his own. He is a large dog & will need a confident & experienced owner & due to his high levels of stamina & exercise demands, he will require lots & lots of exercise & stimulation. (although his recall is spasmodic!) We would be looking for a rural home for Zorro, where he could live with another dog. Children of all ages will be fine, but – due to Zorro’s size, young children may get bumped or knocked over. He is an affectionate dog, who will bond quickly with his new owner, so be prepared for a faithful friend. Zorro is being fostered in Pembrokeshire.

Firefighters rescue Shetland pony
=====================
Back at the start of January (Monday Jan6), crews from Haverfordwest Fire Station responded to an incident in Merlin’s Bridge, Haverfordwest, where a Shetland pony had got itself stuck in a stream.

The pony itself was not in distress, but the cold water posed a significant risk, and intervention was required urgently to prevent further harm.

With assistance from the RSPCA, the fire service’s animal rescue team utilised specialist equipment and their expertise to successfully free the pony from the stream. The animal was unharmed and safely returned to its owner.

Who's that dog!

ROCKY - Rocky is a 4yr old pocket bully who is looking for a home through no fault of his own. His owners were homeless, so they took the difficult decision to give him up for adoption. He is a very loving & loyal boy & will settle best in a home without another dog. Due to his exuberance he will be better with older children, as little children will probably be knocked over. He is not a fan of cats or other small furries either, but loves his humans to bits.

At 13 years of age, Malie P***k is already making a name for herself as a promising young boxer at Merlins Bridge Amateur Boxing Club, where her commitment is clear, even over a short chat with her alongside Naomi Dalton, one of the club’s assistant coaches, who like Malie started out just paying a visit and staying there.......
