📖 Workbooks often utilise a selection of activities to appeal to students’ various learning styles, as well as keeping the material engaging and impactful. The use of illustrations can add so much to a workbook, helping to bring the information to life and adding context to the activity. 🍏

🖍 It’s Children’s Art Week…

Art is a fantastic medium for expression, self indulgence, creativity and fun. But from a design perspective art and illustration play an essential role in our designs. Not only do they add interest and impact, they also help engage the learner and make learning fun. A component we often work on here at Wild Apple Design are workbooks which often utilise artwork to help bring exercises alive and add a visual aspect.

📚Workbooks are essential in English Language Teaching, they often accompany students books and teachers books as part of a full scheme. They guide students through theory, help with cognitive tasks, and encourage deep thinking. Plus, they offer a structured way to track progress with text, sketches, and photos. Perfect for mastering complex concepts! 🍏

🎨 A good design brief is super important for us as designers, because it sets the stage for the whole project. It spells out, amongst other things; what the book needs to achieve, its target market, the key themes, making sure everything lines up with the learning goals. This helps everyone stay on the same page, cuts down on confusion and potential proof stages, and keeps things running smoothly. Plus, it gives designers a clear guide to create engaging and effective educational content, making learning more fun and impactful for students and teachers. 📚

More specifically knowing the clients like and dislikes alongside some examples can really help your designer realise your vision quicker and on budget! 🍏.

As a studio, we are frequently asked to design covers. This may be as a stand-a-lone brief, or as part of a package that includes internal pages and additional materials such as handouts, flashcards, and posters. ✏️🍏

🎨 Designing covers for ELT often involves creating a set of cohesive designs that work together across multiple units and levels. These designs are often applied to other materials such as teacher books and workbooks. The art as a designer is making these components look different enough whilst maintaining continuity and making it clear that all components belong to the same set. 📚

The use of a character/characters is common in many of the projects we work on, and for good reason! 👧👨🏾

The use of a character can help engage the learner, acting as a constant on their journey through the material. Their use extends beyond the aesthetic and individual characters can act as markers for specific types of information, or learning outcomes (i.e. reading, listening). The characters poses and styling, such as the addition of a magnifying glass, or headphones, can help to reinforce this.

“Great characters don’t necessarily have to be human though, and animals work particularly well for a child audience.” 🐼

✏️ The key to designing for primary and pre-primary ELT learners is creating a functional design which engages, inspires and helps learners absorb the material at hand. Typographical choice within this market area is extremely important, with fonts needing to be distinct, with clear letter shapes, ample leading, and kerning which isn’t too tight.

🔍 Legibility is the key! Take a look at these two examples, showing each side of the spectrum, in terms of what works for young learners. 📚 Don’t get us wrong the bottom font is a lovely cut and would be suited to features and realia design for older readers.

🎨✏️ Artwork in educational publishing serves as a powerful tool for; enhancing learning, promoting understanding, fostering creativity, and engaging students in the educational process. 🎓

There are many factors an artist 👩‍🎨 needs to take into account when creating artwork for an educational project. Often they are working to a highly scripted brief, which takes into account the style of the asset, any cultural requirements, as well as specific details essential to the context of the exercise it accompanies. 🍏 🎨
