As I recount my recent travels to Malaga earlier this year! This whirlwind adventure left me and my girlfriend feeling like we were destined for bad luck on that trip 😂 Even though I'm far removed from anything spiritual or superstitious.
While one of our flights was delayed (they all were) I started contemplating on the accomplishments of the past couple of years.
A couple of years that involved:
2020/2022 - Selling consulting & coaching ($1M in revenue generated with a team of 4)
2022/2023 - Selling PR packages (podcasting)
🏢 And then, fate led me to a short contract with a brick and mortar business, where I was tasked with taking on their traditional marketing campaigns which was really outside my comfort zone.. I'm only interested in online businesses.
But there's a profound realisation I've made in these different industries is that many them are the same.
What remains the same? The process of acquisition and building systems.
Allow me to share what's been uncovered in sales and marketing over the last few years:
1. Iteration cycles
- For anything to work, you must be able to repeat it. You can't scale creativity, but you can scale strategy.
High volume = more cycles
more cycles = improvement
2. Focus on one thing
- Focus on one avatar, problem, solution, channel, change, optimisation.
3. Most people are full of 💩
- Most people don't have a clue.
- Most marketers are making untold sums of money in their industry because they were involved in a time of high growth... Spotting these markets early on is a skill in itself (unless you're lucky)
