The Mill has been told that Sir Howard Bernstein, the former chief executive of Manchester City Council, has died at the age of 71. Bernstein was a major figure in the redevelopment of the city. He died earlier this morning after a period of illness.

Born to a Jewish family in Cheetham Hill in 1953, Bernstein rose to become one of the most influential figures in local government. He was central to the GM devolution process and his partnership with council leader Sir Richard Leese defined the shape of modern Manchester.

His family are expected to release a statement shortly.

Ian Simpson and Rachel Haugh have been Manchester’s foremost architects for 20 years.

They have designed the buildings that define our skyline and represent the city’s future, but do they have too much sway over the way Manchester looks?
