WHO AM I? I AM THE GREATEST DEBTOR TO HIS LOVE AND A TROPHY OF HIS GRACE.

Today, the 4TH OF JULY 2024 is significant in my life. Why? It is because on this date many years ago, the will of God prevailed over the will of man - I wasn't meant to be born. But here am I today, and cannot thank God enough for all He has accomplished in my life.

A former BBC Reporter who interviewed me described my life as "dramatic and eventful". You can find out more about this "dramatic and eventful" life from my book, THE GREATEST DEBTOR TO HIS LOVE AND A TROPHY OF HIS GRACE. I tell you what, this book saved the lives of two women after they read my story. So what would have happened if I wasn't born? I leave that to your imagination.

The lyrics of this song resonates so much with what is going on in my thoughts right now, as I reflect on God's goodness in my life:

Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth
Would care to know my name
Would care to feel my hurt
Who am I, that the Bright and Morning Star
Would choose to light the way
For my ever wandering heart

Not because of who I am
But because of what You've done
Not because of what I've done
But because of who You are

I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
V***r in the wind
Still You hear me when I'm calling
Lord, You catch me when I'm falling
And You've told me who I am
I am Yours, I am Yours

Who am I, that the eyes that see my sin
Would look on me with love and watch me rise again
Who am I, that the voice that calmed the sea
Would call out through the rain
And calm the storm in me

Not because of who I am
But because of what You've done
Not because of what I've done
But because of who You are

I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
V***r in the wind
Still You hear me when I'm calling
Lord, You catch me when I'm falling
And You've told me who I am
I am Yours

Not because of who I am
But because of what You've done
Not because of what I've done
But because of who You are

I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
V***r in the wind
Still You hear me when I'm calling
Lord, You catch me when I'm falling
And You've told me who I am
I am Yours

I am Yours
Whom shall I fear
Whom shall I fear
'Cause I am Yours
I am Yours

THOUGHT FOR TODAY - ARE YOU A TRUE WITNESS?

The disciples of Jesus had an assignment to fulfil, but they couldn’t do it in their own strength. They needed a power that did not come from man, but from God. Hence, before Jesus was taken up into heaven after his resurrection, He commanded them ‘not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father’ (Acts 1:4). And what was this ‘promise’? “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

Then in Acts 2:1-4 we read that ‘when the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting… And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance’. After this we see such incredible transformation in their lives. The ‘cowards’ who ran away when Jesus was arrested were now confronting the religious leaders. This same Peter, who denied Jesus THREE TIMES, before a little girl was now so bold that he gave them a treatise on the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, and saw thousands saved in one day. And what I love about his testimony is the confirmation of what Jesus had told them – “you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

The accusation of the religious leaders and their misunderstanding of the Pentecost experience gave Peter the opportunity, not only to present them with the gospel truth, but also to let them know that God had raised up “this Jesus”, and that they were all His “witnesses” (Acts 2:32). Also, after Peter and John healed the lame man who sat daily at the temple begging alms (Acts 3), there was so much commotion about how such a feat was accomplished. This again presented them with the opportunity to declare to the people, “you denied the Holy One and the just, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses” (Acts 3:14-15).

One of the definitions of ‘a witness’ is someone who has ‘knowledge of (an event or change) from personal observation or experience’. What do you expect of the Apostles given what they had experienced with Jesus, after they had been infused with power from on high? They could not be silenced, in the face of threats and imprisonment, rather they spoke boldly of the things they had witnessed about Jesus, and filled Jerusalem with the gospel of Christ, leading to an explosion of souls. And, here is the burden that is on my heart; could it be that the reason many believers are cold and apathetic in their walk with God is the fact that 1) they have not been infused with the power of the Holy Spirit? or 2) they have not witnessed anything in their lives that can testify about Jesus. In Acts 4:13 we read, ‘when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marvelled, and they realised that they had been with Jesus’.

We understand that miscarriage of justice occurs when a TRUE WITNESS, who knows the truth about an event, stands before a judge and testifies otherwise. How many innocent people are probably languishing in jail because those who witnessed what transpired were not true witnesses but gave contrary evidence. Could this be the reason why many sinners are on their way to hell because believers who claim to have encountered Jesus, and have tasted of His goodness in their lives are not true witnesses? What else would Jesus have to do to get us to testify to the world about who He is, and what He has done for us?

Father God, we ask for your forgiveness for our cowardice, when it comes to sharing our faith and our experiences with others. You’ve done too much in our lives that should cause us not to be silent but to be bold and courageous. The world is waiting to hear the ‘evidence’ from those who are true witnesses of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
