We are delighted to announce the launch of the 2024 and first ever Services Sports Awards.

The team behind the National Armed Forces & Emergency Services Event and the 2023 Services Awards are delighted to announce the launch of another first for the services sector - The 2024 Services Sports Awards.

Following feedback from attendees and persons nominating for the 2023 Services Awards, which celebrated the best in Service from armed to emergency to volunteer, there was deemed enough demand to stage a separate event to honour the greatest sporting achievements within the services community.

The 2023 Services Awards saw the likes of a British Army Superbike contestant nominated, whilst two firefighters from Hampshire took home the Most Outstanding Fire Service Award for their efforts in rowing the Atlantic Ocean.

Now, serving personnel and veterans from the three emergency services, the three branches of the forces and the volunteer arena have their own stage in which to focus sporting success.

Taking place on Thursday April 11, 2024 at the Montgomery Suite, Stadium of Light, Sunderland, the evening will begin with a drinks reception in the Business Lounge before dinner is served in what will be a black tie event. The awards ceremony will round off a memorable evening.

The event to be hosted by someone with a foot in both sports and services - watch this space!

There are 8 categories in total and the criteria is set out below.
Most Outstanding Royal Navy Services Sports Award
Most Outstanding Fire Services Sports Award
Most Outstanding British Army Services Sports Award
Most Outstanding Police Services Sports Award
Most Outstanding Royal Air Force Services Sports Award
Most Outstanding NHS/Healthcare Services Sports Award
Most Outstanding Volunteer Services Sports Award
Most Outstanding Overall Services Sports Award

Criteria:

A person, group, unit or programme that has gone above and beyond in commitment, spirit or achievement in the field of sports or a competitive environment within the time period of January 1, 2023 to January 1, 2024, either through work or outside of the working environment. Open to both serving and former personnel.

Anyone can nominate.
Please email [email protected] to nominate stating the name of the people or persons involved and the reasons why.

The Overall Sports Award will be decided by the judging panel from the nominees from the 7 other categories.

Nominations close Thursday February 29, 2024 at 11pm.

A shortlisting period then takes place with nominees notified and a judging panel will choose the winners on merit and announced in the awards evening.

Sponsorship opportunities and ticket enquiries are also available for the evening, please enquire via [email protected]

Congratulation to our Sapper Tejan Gurung, who reached the summit of Mount Everest on the 27th of May. This is a fantastic achievement and a great display of determination and endurance, both traits prized by the Corps.

I will never forget the history and the pain of what it took me (both physically and mentally) and for my family to get to this stage of my life.
I gave up my career within the UKSF and my full SF pension for this project. Not only did I re-mortgage my only house (bought from the savings I made from my 16 years of my military career) for the project. I also had to go through huge mental stress in order to raise the funding with endless nights without sleep. My brothers abandoning me because of this - which obviously created more stress.

It was a lot of hard work, writing emails, endless efforts to find the support I needed and yet still getting rejected.

I knew I could make this project come to life, and although I only had less than 15% of the funding I took the risk and  still flew to Nepal to start my climb. I am 100% sure that no one will ever take a risk like this in a "similar style - giving up highly prestigious job, pension, remortgaging house and putting everything in line and raising the funds at the same time while climbing ) with a project as big and dangerous as “Project Possible".

The magnitude of work that I had to do was next level.

I was risking my life like no one else for a dream and a record that no one thought possible. At every point, there was a risk of losing my life and my fellow climbers, people can lose their life just climbing one mountain and you have seen this first hand on my first mountain Annapurna, then on Kanchenjunga, Everest and so on. I believed in this project and took full responsibility of my safety and my teams’ safety as well.

While I was climbing, I still had to raise the funds and I was the only person in the team doing so - the rest of my climbing partners were highly paid.

People say “we forget the pain” BUT I can’t as the level of pain and suffering I had to go though to make this whole project come to life was bigger than anything I have ever imagined – and I know that nobody will TRULY understand this.

My success is not a coincidence nor it was it given to me .

However the case, I will also never forget those people who supported me truly.
