Happy 85th birthday to Jimmie Nicol, who was a Beatle for only 13 days in 1964 as Ringo Starrs’ Replacement!

Quick backstory: In June of 1964, Ringo Starr was hospitalized for tonsillitis and pharyngitis, leaving The Beatles down one drummer right before the launch of their first world tour. A 24-year-old journeyman drummer named Jimmie Nicol received a fevered phone call from producer George Martin asking if he could fill in immediately. He agreed, auditioned, dropped everything and set off on the tour. He proved a fine choice for the gig; a gifted, hard-working percussionist — respected, personable and adaptable.

His time as a Beatle was brief – five concerts and TV show in Holland – and unfortunately not even the stuff of legend.

George Harrison was against Jimmie (or anyone) replacing Ringo at first, but he still treated him with great kindness and respect, patting him on the back and joking with him.

But many years later, Jimmie said “Standing in for Ringo was the worst thing that ever happened to me.”

He mentioned he was given a gold watch and a cheque for £500, but less than a year later, he was declared bankrupt. The newspapers did a story a year after Jimmie’s stint with The Beatles, saying he was bankrupt, divorced, out of work... Paul McCartney read this and wanted to help Jimmie, but he knew he would be too proud to directly talk with him, so he made phone calls on his behalf that gave him studio session work and tour work.

He seems to have disappeared, although best reports say he is still alive at 85. Until we hear otherwise.

Jeff Beck opinion on Jimi Hendrix:
"When I saw Jimi, we knew he was going to be trouble, and by ‘we’, I mean me and Eric (Clapton) because Jimmy (Page) wasn’t in the frame at that point.” I saw him at one of his earliest performances in Britain, and it was quite devastating,” he continued, humbly revealing his envy. “He did all the dirty tricks – setting fire to his guitar, doing swoops up and down his neck, all the great showmanship to put the final nail in our coffin. I had the same temperament as Hendrix in terms of ‘I’ll kill you’, but he did in such a good package with beautiful songs.

I don’t want to say that I knew him well, I don’t think anybody did, but there was a period in London when I went to visit him quite a few times,” Beck added later. “He invited me down to Olympic studios, and I gave him a bottleneck. That’s what he plays on Axis: Bold As Love. We hooked up in New York and played at Steve Paul’s club, The Scene.” - Jeff Beck (2021 interview)

“Monterey was the nexus – it sprang from what the Beatles began, and from it sprang what followed.” — Jann Wenner (Rolling Stone Magazine)

Happy Birthday to the Monterey International Pop Festival held on June 16-18,1967 in Monterey, California. One of the greatest showcases of music talent in the history of music festivals.

Arranged by publicist Derek Taylor, record producer Lou Adler, Alan Pariser and member of The Mamas & Papas John Phillips, the festival saw established acts such as Simon & Garfunkel and the Byrds share the spotlight with new and promising artists from the UK and US including Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Animals, The Who, Otis Redding and Ravi Shankar. The supreme talent from many disparate genres of music were represented here. Blues, Folk, Rock, Soul, Pop, and Indian music were performed and consumed by the crowd with great pleasure.

On this day in 1975, Syd Barrett made a surprise appearance at a Pink Floyd 'Wish You Were Here' mixing session. He arrived overweight, with shaved hair and eyebrows, and silently observed as the band worked on "Shine on You Crazy Diamond," a song dedicated to him. Without uttering a word, he departed, leaving his former bandmates initially unable to recognize him due to his drastically altered appearance. It marked the final encounter between them.
