A huge, massive and “we couldn’t have done it without you” heartfelt thanks to everyone who came along on Saturday, 20th Jan, to Manchester for the big screen debut of our first production as .

The day was just an absolute blast, with myself and Gino feeling like very proud parents, and, of course, it was great seeing everybody again

It’s been a long, wonderful and educational journey and now the hard promotional work starts to get our film seen by everyone…

WOW! WHAT A YEAR!

We really just want to top out this year by saying a massive “THANK YOU!”

Thank you to all the cast and crew, those who have believed in us and supported us in bringing our first full-length feature, finally, into glorious soundtracked and graded reality.

Really guys… Merry fecking Christmas to each and every one of you - and have a brilliant holiday season with friends and family - you lovely, lovely people!

Making really has been a wonderful and exciting experience and, least of all, bloody scary - but all throughout this crazy journey it’s been made all the more wonderful by our lovely and supportive as well as passionate, skilled and dedicated suppliers - including:

It’s music to our ears. 🎵

The amazing soundtrack to our first feature film , that is.

We are honoured and humbled to have had the pleasure of working with the phenomenally talented Dan Baboulene on creating the amazing soundtrack that he has created for us.

Dan Baboulene is a film and television composer best known for his work on Netflix's The Art of Love (2022), Sky Movies' Swede Caroline (2023), Eaten By Lions (2018), BBC 2's Brexit documentaries with Laura Kuenssberg (2019) and Paul Dood's Deadly Lunchbreak (2020.)

Dan is a BAFTA Connect Member whose awards for feature-length scores include Best Music awards at Toronto ADFF, Budapest FF, Munich FF, Los Angeles TSFF and London NRFF, to name a few!

As briefed, we had no doubt that Dan’s soundtrack would add a powerful layer to the narrative and bring extra depth to creative director Gino’s vision and script.

We’re proud to collaborate with Dan, who has brought an innovative and unique compositional voice to our script.

We’ll keep you updated on the progress here! 📣

It's great to see Cinema come back to life this year with huge Summer Blockbusters, this year. 🎥

There can be no doubt that 2023 has been a year of triumph for cinema and film fans alike after the huge success of Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan's epic Oppenheimer.

Our Creative Director Gino is in the chair!

Great to see more progress on our first feature as an independent film production company.

Gino has been putting in the long days and nights required, with Tracks and Layers on the grading in post-production to get the film looking awesome and in line with Gino’s creative vision for the production.

For those of you that don’t know, Grading in film production is the process of adjusting the colour and contrast of footage to create a desired look. It is a complex process that involves using specialised software to manipulate the individual pixels of an image.

Grading is an important part of the film post-production process. It helps to improve the overall look of a film and create a more immersive viewing experience for the audience.

Tracks and Layers is a motion and VFX studio founded in 2014 by Mike Pettyt. The studio is located in Manchester and prides itself on its talented team and unique personality.

They create animated content for TV, film, education, and brands - from broadcast motion graphics to 3D titles, so we’re looking forward to seeing where they take our baby!

From rough cut to final cut, we’re on our way…

Our creative director Gino is now deep into the editing stage of our first feature “Treading Water” with over 30% of the first draft complete and we’re now getting really excited for the next stage of our journey.

We then move into the promotional stage with timelines planned for festival entries and attendances later this year.

Wow… it’s all getting very real!

Wow!

Has it really been 12 months already? 🤯

It would appear it has…

After the last twelve months, myself and Gino are so proud to be finally seeing our dream of writing, filming and producing an independent UK film as Big North FIlms - become a finished reality!

So, we are now deep into editing , our first feature film after a whirlwind of casting, scripting, filming on various locations around the UK, and visiting film festivals to get a feeling for the industry.

Of course, we’d be lying if we didn’t say there weren’t moments of “what the hell have we done?!” - but wow, it’s all been worth it!

It’s been a total privilege for us, to be working right from the off, with such a fantastic crew and cast and creative partners, to get this far. 👏👏

…Too many to mention here, but we’ll be talking loads about you all in the coming months as we build up to the release of the film.

We really do appreciate every one of the Big North Family, going above and beyond to help us bring “Treading Water” to life.

We are both stoked at the work that we have all done together so far, and are so excited for what the coming months will bring.

We set up big north films with a view to making unflinching and brutally honest movies showing how life is for millions of people in the UK today.

Everyday people, who are often unseen, don’t regularly get a voice and are just trying to get through life on a daily basis. In many cases struggling with various issues - often caused by their unfortunate situations.

After many years of ideation, concepts, and endless discussions we are proud to have seen our dream and vision come to life with the help of a wonderful, loyal, and committed cast and crew.

Treading Water is a very British tragic love story, set against the backdrop of mental health issues, domestic violence, and an all too common lack of opportunities for many people struggling through life as it is today..

Filmed against the backdrop of the iconic Manchester skyline Treading Water tells the story of Danny as he is released from prison and tries to take control of his life again and deal with the mental health issues that have shaped his life.

It tells how a chance encounter with a past love becomes an obsession that leads to tragic consequences.

It seeks to show us that the choices we all make, however limited they are, shape the people we become and how we all just try and get by each day the best we can, even if sometimes it feels like we are just treading water.
