Screenwriter and playwright, Theresa Ikoko, joins our host for ep 10, S2.
Theresa shares her journey from winning awards for her first theatre play to writing for the screen.
“I've tried to do in all my work, just spending time with the characters and letting the characters' voices lead. I get to know them first before the story unveils. I write for very much from a place of character. The characters are in charge. There are things that I would like my characters to do. There are easier decisions or better decisions that I would like my characters to make that they just won't and they can't. I couldn't force my characters to say or do anything that they wouldn't say or do. I think it would break the world. I think it would rip the seams of it if I started doing that.”

New episode. Leone Ross is a novelist, short story writer, editor and educator.
“Speculative fiction. I think it is who I am. I build worlds on things that annoy me. It is usually some kind of injustice, small or large. It's like taking a kernel of injustice and then beginning to extrapolate from that into characters, amplifying magical experiences or strangeness that then act as metaphors for the point, for the theme.”

Wasafiri is the UK’s leading magazine for international contemporary writing. The name stems from the Kiswahili word for ‘travellers’ reflecting the magazine’s longstanding engagement with cultural travelling, diverse histories and commitment to extending boundaries of literary culture.
With its roots emerging from the Association for the Teaching of Caribbean, African, Asian and Associated Literatures (ATCAL), Wasafiri was launched in 1984 by co-founder Susheila Nasta. Their vision is to provide literary and critical coverage of writers from African, Caribbean, Asian and Black British backgrounds who often struggle to get adequate attention in the mainstream press.
During our Black History Month podcast special episode, Titans of Black British Publishing, featuring Susheila, Margaret Busby and Verna Wilkins, we unearthed some fascinating insights into the birth and early development of this magazine which, 40 years on, and in an increasingly divided world, continues to provoke vital cross-cultural dialogue.

THIS IS ME Final Verna.mp4
Titans of Black British Publishing highlights three epic women who, for over half a century, helped shape the ecology of publishing in this country.
This Black History Month special features Margaret Busby, co-founder of Allison & Busby; Susheila Nasta founding editor of Wasafari, and Verna Wilkins who founded Tamarind Books in 1987.
Following a conversation with her 5-year old son, Verna identified a lack of diversity in children's books. So, she decided to do something about it. Verna set up a desk on the landing of their home and got to work. Thus Tamarind was born.
Included amongst the plethora of books, two of Tamarind's most well-known titles include The Life of Stephen Lawrence and Dave & The Tooth Fairy.
Because of her vision and passion, Verna's son can see himself reflected in the pages of a book.

💥 In Ep 2 of the current series, our latest guest writer, playwright Roy Samuel Williams discusses his early career and how, after reading an article by American poet Langston Hughes, he was inspired to fully take up the mantle of Black writer.
💬 “A young black man approached Langston Hughes and said… I really admire your work. I want to be like you. I want to be a poet, but I don't want to be a Black poet, I just want to be A poet. And Mr. Hughes turned on the guy and said, why do you wanna do that?”

Our hosts Patricia Cumper and Pauline Walker always ask guests on The Amplify Project to speak about what it means to them to be a Black writer.
In this clip, poet Nick Makoha separates the two; being Black and being a writer and says, "Being Black is an honour."

“We have occasionally been told that there is no such thing as a canon of Black British work.
We’re absolutely convinced that there is. So what we’ve done with The Amplify Project, is found the people who are contributing to the canon. Or who are the contributors. And that is very important because it’s one of the statements we’re making.”

What is The Amplify Project? Our co-hosts explain what is unique about the podcast.
Pat Cumper says, “For me, it’s Black writers in their own words. That’s the important thing about it. What we’ve done is create a series of podcasts.”
“So, we’re talking to writers from the page, stage and screen.” says Pauline Walker

We need storytellers of every background and persuasion to not only enrich our lives but to help us understand one another and our place in the world.
The Amplify Project podcast is a practical response to the systemic inequalities in society that were brought sharply into focus in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd and the #MeToo movement.
It's a response that co-hosts Patricia Cumper and Pauline Walker could shape themselves that reflected their interests as writers, in the lives, work and practice of Black British writers.
In series 1 we were inspired and awestruck by our guests' passion for storytelling as either poets, novelists, playwrights or memoirists.

In this week's episode our hosts, writers Patricia Cumper and Pauline Walker, talk to award-winning playwright and academic Oladipo Agboluaje.
📕 His writing deals with identity and belonging, and the African Diasporic condition. His first play was produced in 2003 at Oval House Theatre Brixton House He won the Alfred Fagon Prize in 2009. His first collection of plays was published by Oberon Bloomsbury Publishing UK in 2014.
Oladipo has published a number of poems and short stories, and he now finds himself writing for more young audiences, setting plays in alternate worlds. His influence for this crop of work stems from a youth spent devouring science fiction, fantasy novels and comic book. He supports Arsenal (we're not holding it against him.)
