Police officers surprise little boy who saved his dad’s life
“Daddy is sick.”
The words of brave boy, Tyler, who called 999 when his dad fell unconscious at home last month.
Despite being scared himself, the eight-year-old tried to keep his frightened four-year-old sister, Amber, calm while he diligently answered one of Durham Constabulary's call handler’s questions and gave them vital information so they could send officers to help.
Officers blue-lighted to the address and in minutes, were with the family to help, finding dad Jamie Miller unconscious on the floor and hardly breathing.
Paramedics also attended and confirmed Mr Miller was seriously ill in what appears to have been a diabetic attack that could have proved fatal if not for Tyler’s heroic actions.
PC Jordan McGregor, who was first on the scene, praised Tyler for knowing to call for help.
He said: “Tyler is an amazing little boy who undoubtedly helped save his dad’s life by calling 999 – not many young children would know how call for help in an emergency and he showed courage and bravery helping us to help his daddy.
“Tyler is very enthusiastic about the police but was apprehensive that he may be in trouble for contacting the police when he did so he deserves extra credit for that too!”
Tyler’s mum, Samantha Turnbull, said the whole family couldn’t be prouder of Tyler, who is also disabled.
“Jamie is Type 1 diabetic and he had been unwell and slipped into a diabetic coma,” the 33-year-old said. “He was on his own and not able to make anyone aware that he was sick but Tyler managed to get his phone and phone 999 so he did everything to help him.
“Tyler has Global Developmental Delay so his mind is only of a four-year-old and he also has speech delay so we are even more impressed he managed to raise the alarm.”
Miss Turnbull added: “He was a bit scared at first but realised he’d done the best thing helping daddy and everyone is so proud of him.”

A drink driver who flipped her car while two children and a dog were in the back has been sentenced.
Gemma Trevail was driving a Suzuki S-Cross on Front Street, in Wingate, when she collided with the front of a shop and flipped the car onto its side.
Miraculously, the two children and dog walked away unscathed following the collision, which took place at around 9am on Friday, November 1.
Officers arrested Trevail at the scene and brought her into police custody, where she was breathalysed.
The 41-year-old was found to have 105mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath – more than three times the legal limit of 35mg.
Trevail, of Wingate, was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol, two counts of child neglect, driving while otherwise than in accordance with a licence, driving without insurance, and criminal damage.
She admitted the offences and appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (December 14) where she was banned from driving for two years.
She was also handed an 18-month community order with a requirement to take part in alcohol treatment.
Inspector Andy Howarth, from Durham Roads and Armed Policing Unit, said: “Trevail’s actions that day were incomprehensible.
“She showed absolutely no consideration for anybody else when she chose to get behind the wheel of her car that morning.
“It is a miracle that she did not seriously injure or worse, kill her passengers or an innocent member of the public going about their daily business.
“We see firsthand the devastation that drink driving can cause – it rips families apart and causes unimaginable suffering.
“Officers will be carrying out drink drive checks across County Durham and Darlington over the festive period.
“Don’t ruin your Christmas, or anyone else’s - if you’re drinking, leave the car at home.”

Cleveland Police have today launched a hard-hitting campaign to deter young people from carrying a blade.
The campaign – Carrying a Blade Doesn’t Give You an Edge – focuses on two children whose lives are both impacted and changed forever by knife crime. One child is the victim of a knife attack and the other is the perpetrator committing the crime.
Both are living their daily lives and going to school, until one day it all changes and the boys disappear to an entirely different life – one child has died after being stabbed with a blade and the other is in prison for committing the crime.
It hopes to encourage young people to understand the dangers and devastating consequences of carrying blades.
This is the second part of the force’s knife crime prevention campaign Carrying a Blade Doesn’t Give You an Edge which originally launched in October 2023.
In the last 12 months – October 2023 to October 2024 – a knife has been involved in the killing of six people in Teesside.
Between October 2023 to October 2024 police received 503 reports of violence with injury that involved a blade. 154 of those offences involved young people aged 14 to 24 and who were victims of a crime involving a blade.
Assistant Chief Constable, Richard Baker said: “This phase of the campaign is a hard-hitting and true reality for young people. In the blink of an eye, following a bad decision to carry a knife, young lives can change forever.
"Evidence is clear that a child that carries a knife is more likely to become a victim of knife crime, whether that’s being seriously injured, or worse lose their life. If they themselves use the knife the reality is they will get caught and then face a substantial amount of time in prison.
“We want young people to stop and think about how they would feel if they were sent to prison, away from family and friends for seriously hurting or even killing someone else.
“There is a lot of hard work ongoing behind the scenes to ensure

Marie Johnson lost her parents in a catastrophic motorway collision in 2021, when lorry driver Ion Nicu Onut failed to stop in time for stationary traffic.
He had been using his mobile phone.
In March, Durham Constabulary’s Victim Care & Advice Service facilitated a meeting between Marie and Ion.
“In my head I wanted him to be a monster,” she said, “but he wasn’t. He was just a normal man.
“It was like having a conversation with a friend about what we’d been through. I never gave it a thought that this man was the man that killed my parents.”

This afternoon, Stacey Vint, 34, from Middlesbrough, was sentenced to 20 months in prison after being involved in the disorder in Middlesbrough town centre.
She was part of a group who set alight a wheelie bin, then pushed it into a police cordon. In the process of doing so, Stacey fell to the ground and was then arrested by officers.
Cleveland Police have now released footage showing the moment she fell and was subsequently arrested.
A teenager who was caught on CCTV “celebrating” after throwing bricks at police officers has been convicted.

“As we have previously said, we will not tolerate criminality and violent disorder in our communities.
“I reiterate to anybody who commits these types of acts, we will tirelessly look for you and deal with you robustly. This will always be Durham Constabulary’s approach when dealing with incidents such as this.
