"Too much"

This can be polemic, but let's go. I have been missing sharing some ideas here in this space.

As I am getting older, I am definitely putting more value & time into true connections. Those ones that are calm, that don't drain my energy, & where I feel that the relationship is smooth & reciprocal.

Especially living as a migrant woman from Brazil in the UK, where many times I know people will think I am "too much".

I learn a lot just by talking/exchanging ideas with other migrants who feel the same. Yesterday I was having a coffee with another woman from our international community during some rare "spare time", & she shared with me the same feeling. I am currently too busy, but that 4h coffee meeting that took up my full afternoon was what I needed. To be honest, I needed that pause & I just forgot about all the tasks I need to do.

Our conversation was about the fact that many times we feel like the British society unfortunately doesn't appreciate the diversity we bring to this country.

The patronising behaviour is strong, unfortunately, as the way we (foreigners) do things, the way we deliver our work and creative ideas are often seen as incorrect... And the worst thing: the way we are passionate when we deal with other human beings can be criticised. Quite often we are seen as being "too much" & all of that can be taken as if we are not serious enough. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ™„

I will keep being "too much" as it is an important part of my identity & it is not negotiable. I know behind the scenes it is hard as there will be many judgments. For the people who judge migrants for doing their work in a "different" way I would say: go & travel to other places. If you don't have the money, at least try to immerse yourself (without stereotyping and judging) in local activities where other people thinking & acting "differently" to you will be there as well. Come on. Make an effort. Break that ridiculous thing about "them and us".

It cannot be so hard guys! For my migrant followers, please don't change! Keep being "too much" & "too passionate" about who you are.

And it makes all the difference when we find a safe community where we can be ourselves & shine ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿป๐ŸŽ„ Join us for a jolly good time at theย Living in Sheffield X Christmas social at

It's the perfect opportunity to mingle with fellow Sheffielders and beer enthusiasts. Guests will be welcomed with a pint of craft beer and fancy Xmas flavoured crisps (paired with your beer. Just like in cheese and wine tastings).

There will also be a Christmas themed quiz ๐Ÿฅณ

Put your Xmas jumpers on guys and join Livia and Jules to socialise, make friends and celebrate!! In case you don't drink beer, it will also be possible to swap your drink for a pint of cider, glass of wine or a non-alcoholic drink.

This is a fun event for friends, couples or even if you come on your own (it is a safe and friendly space).

Tickets for this experience are likely to sell out, as it only has a few spaces available!

Don't miss out on this merry event! Cheers!

Community: definition in the dictionary is "a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common".

For me it goes beyond this. Community means unity, love, understanding, celebration, friendship, belonging and inclusion. The richness of life is to be able to learn from each other. No-one is better than anyone else. We are all here in Sheffield and in the world to make a difference in some way.

Living in Sheffield at the Careers and Networking Fair at the Town Hall, organised by .cic

It was a wonderful opportunity to share about my work as a journalist/writer and community engagement/audience development officer in different projects in our city, such as my work with and (2 organisations offering great opportunities in Sheffield. Check them out guys)!!

It was great to take my new branded marketing material, all beautifully designed by .cl aka .it.visually I am in love with my banner and beautiful business cards, aligned with my brand and values.

Thanks to my good friend and supporter Ironically we met each other 6 years ago at a Volunteering Fair inside the Town Hall as well. I am glad she is now by my side as my valuable volunteer ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ’–

A young girl came to my table in the event and asked about tips for her as a young graphic designer. I told her that it is all about making connections (be a volunteer to build a CV, go for events, keep moving) and feeling confident about her work and goals. Never alow anyone to push you down (there unfortunately will be a few mediocre people doing it) and mostly important find your community, people who will truly appreciate you and your hard work!!

Through my years in Sheffield I would say that it is really all about the great connections we develop and the community we build guys! It takes time, but trust me you are not alone and we all need to start from somewhere.

Set in Nigeria in the late 1940's and based on a true story. Elesin, the king's horseman, is tasked with carrying out a sacred ritual upon the death of the king. However, Elesin is overtaken by the attraction of earthly desires. The play is rooted in the culture and spirituality of the Yoruba people.

Unfortunately, I have noticed that Instagram is not showing my posts in the same way as it used to. Please, if you want to support my work, it is important if you can like, comment, save and share my posts. It costs nothing to do, but it makes a difference for me. And hopefully this social media platform will then start to show my posts again when they see that the content is relevant. It is how the algorithm works ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

[Living in Sheffield talk] Today I had the pleasure to share about my own journey with Living in Sheffield and my thoughts (as a communicator and a migrant with lived experience) about how to create powerful/meaningful communities. Thanks for having me at your Amala's Connection Club at the beautiful .sheff inside

For me, with my years in the UK, community means everything. It means my own adaptation, integration and understanding about cultural differences. It means creating inclusive, bright and safe spaces for migrants like me. I believe that when we don't feel welcome in some environment, we can create our own community. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

As a trained journalist, I have been using my communication skills as a tool to empower people, including other migrants, and to empower my own self. A few years ago, in 2018, I started Living in Sheffield as a virtual platform (initially with the aim to share interesting places and events). I am now still sharing about places and events, but more than that, I am sharing about meaningful projects and my own work and events.

Living in Sheffield has grown, gained a book, a podcast, and a few community gatherings under this brand. I am also proudly working as the Audience Development Officer for and as a community outreach officer for a

My diary for social media consultations for small businesses is open from January ๐Ÿ”ฅ Let's have a coffee together and I will blow you with many creative ideas for honest content aligned to your brand. I am also available to promote your events!

Such a good way to kick off the week ๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐ŸŒŽโค I just had a beautiful multicultural Sunday

Today it was my 1st time attending a baby's Full Moon Party and I absolutely loved it. My friend organised it so well. Dean and I learned about the meaning of this event and it is quite beautiful ๐Ÿ˜

The Full Moon celebration harks back to ancient times when infant mortality was high in China. For a new born to survive the first month of their lives meant they were more likely to survive into adulthood. Reaching this crucial milestone in their young lives certainly called for celebrations. This day also marked the time when mother would be released from confinement to show the new addition to the family to relatives and friends.

The Full Moon celebrations is therefore a combination of 3 things: baby's coming of age, mum stepping out in style after 30 days in confinement and the big reveal of mum and baby to everyone around. โค It was great to be with as well ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿฅณ We loved the space and buffet food from (one of my favourite Chinese restaurants in Sheffield โค) + the Malaysian desserts made by Yunn's family were so delicious. We could feel love in them โคโค

The second event I went was the birthday party of my good friend in a beautiful "sisters" gathering with women from our International community โค

Thanks for having me, my friends. I am currently fighting Anaemia and not feeling super energetic, but today I had a special day and it was a pleasure to leave my house. Sheffield or anywhere in the world is always a better place when we have diversity and we can learn from each other โคโคโคโค

Nice to be together ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿฅณ

The first academic review of my book Living in Sheffield: Our Journeys as Migrant Women. It is quite deep and great.

It was written by Evie Rushworth and published on the University of Sheffield Migration and Research Group's website.

Despite all the barriers I faced as a migrant in the UK to make this book happen, I feel so proud of my work in Sheffield and beyond! All migrant communities deserve visibility, recognition and celebration. Unfortunately, these is still a long way to achieve these things properly.

The link to read it is in my bio ๐Ÿ”ฅ

We have been surviving to so many tests along the way, including 4 years apart in a long distance relationship, the UK hostile system, the cultural differences between us that is absolutely normal in a multicultural family. The fact you learnt Portuguese makes all the difference and it also makes us closer.

This first photo in Prague was taken less than 24h after our meeting in this life and the other ones in this carrousel post are some of the memories we have been making in Sheffield, in my hometown Fortaleza and in other places in Brazil... Life is hard enough and I am absolutely ready to have more fun and laughts with you, my parter in adventures, meu amor โค

Of course I choose our song for this post ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Just give us a kiss to celebrate here today.

I am super excited to announce that on Monday 14th of October at 10am I will be at the Amala's Connection Club networking event by

It will take place at on Pinstone Street. I am definitely using this space to share some thoughts and my own the journey and aim of Living in Sheffield (this space/personal project that I started in 2018 on my own and has being connecting so many people online and offline in Sheffield and beyond). I started it because back on time I felt lonely and lost in Sheffield and then I realised that there were many people like me looking for genuine friends and connections in the city as well as feeling confident in exploring all the possibilities Sheffield has to offer. So I have been using my communications skills + my heart/sensibility to create something meaningful that I really hope can positively make an impact in people's lives.

Amala told me that during the event there will also be a tour around the hotel (with great views to the Peace Gardens) with Indian inspired nibbles and finger food waiting for us in the hotel's Governor Gupta Restaurant.

I have been living in the UK for many years now, but I still don't think it is easy to survive the grey, cold and rainy days. I am not going to lie, I struggle. Vitamin D, seeing friends, having a schedule of activities for the day, having something exciting to look forward too + I absolutely need brigh colours to give me a push ๐Ÿ˜‰

This post is a photo dump of colours from some behind the scenes on the last couple of weeks ๐Ÿงกโค๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›

What is your cup of courage on a rainy awful day like today guys?
