It incorporates books published earlier under the imprint Hog's Back, originally set up to publish books on the Scottish folk tradition (the imprint is still used for certain academic titles). Our intention is to publish quality Scottish books by current authors and reprints of works of Scottish substance worthy of further attention. We are a new (2020) independent publishing initiative designed t

o directly engage writers and readers with new literature to raise the standard of writing and reading opportunities for presentation to the public. We celebrate, promote and develop Scotland’s rich and growing literary culture by improving and sustaining quality, raising awareness, and increasing access for writers and readers. Our aim is to build accessible resources and opportunities for writers and readers in Scotland and internationally, for the public, and industry professionals alike. This resource will be available to search online with direct links to the purchase of literature. A small independent publisher, we're starting off small with the potential to be a significant national resource. This enterprise will be a significant tool in the promotion of Scotland creating trade opportunities throughout the UK and overseas. At Rymour Books we’re always on the lookout for exciting new partners to work with. We’re proud to have a diverse and dynamic range of books and authors in our catalogue, and we know that working with partners is essential to our business success. Whether you’re a print or e-book retailer, a brand, a start-up or something completely different, if you have an opportunity for us or believe we could do something innovative and interesting together, we’d be pleased to hear from you.

I'm sorry to report that Robin Lloyd-Jones passed away last night. Born in 1934, he was one of Scotland's finest writers over many decades, noted for his award-winning novels and non-fiction. I was privileged to be able to publish his last two books: Scottish Wilderness Connection, essays and poems in praise of the Scottish landscape, and Gods of the Lost Crossroads, a novel which was recently shortlisted for a major international prize. I saw him only 10 days ago. He was very frail and tired but aware of his situation and comfortable. His wife, Sallie, cared for him until the end.

It is just over a year since we launched the marvellous Gods of the Lost Crossroads by Robin Lloyd-Jones. We were recently delighted to be longlisted for the prestigious Wilbur Smith Adventure Prize as Best Published Novel. Unfortunately, it didn't make the shortlist. One of the judges commented: 'This is a completely unique take on adventure, and a refreshingly realistic description of issues such as racism, colonialism and slavery. I love the characters and I know the book will stay with me for a considerable period of time.' Copies still available from https://www.rymour.co.uk.

“In the bows of the small boat, Rainbow, a tall muscular African, peered nervously through the fog which drifted like lost souls across the water. The sun had not yet risen and the river was in semi-darkness. He turned to the two water-spirits.

‘Is this the Dark River which flows from the other world? Have I reached it at last?’

The oarsman laughed and hawked up phlegm of much the same colour as the fog. His cough sounded like the barking of a baboon.

'Tell us your name first. You never told us your name.'"

Gods of the Lost Crossroads by Robin Lloyd-Jones follows Rainbow, an African shaman, as he travels through London in the early-nineteenth century in an attempt to locate the gods who will rescue his homeland from famine.

Amidst the Peruvian War of Independence, he confronts colonialism and racism, seeking resolution amidst turmoil. This is a captivating historical novel with huge contemporary relevance.

ADVANCE NOTICE: Put in your diary the launch of a major new biography of Edward Tull-Warnock scheduled for 4th December (details to follow).

Edward Tull-Warnock was an orphan, was descended from slaves in Barbados, who was adopted by a Glasgow couple. He became a pioneering dental surgeon and member of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow.

A talented sportsman, he was a champion golfer and played football for various teams including Ayr Parkhouse. A keen supporter also, He encouraged Glasgow Rangers to sign his brother Walter Tull who was also the first black footballer to play in the top division of the Football League with Tottenham Hotspur.

Edward was also a renowned singer of ‘Negro Spirituals’, a keen follower of Paul Robeson, a campaigner for the National Health Service and a member of the Socialist Medical Association.

This meticulously researched book tells his story from its antecedents from the sugar plantations of Barbados through his exemplary career. More than a biography, it is a social history of the Caribbean diaspora and of the mixed race community in the UK.
