We're super excited about our next release, made in collaboration with Positive Note. Fragments of Experience is out on Friday 10th November - details to follow. But this isn't just an album, it's an 18min audio-visual feast with music and AI promptography by Mark Bowler Music alongside 2D animation by Harrison Fleming, original William Blake artworks, and live performance footage.

My music often looks ridiculously complicated on screen - several tens of layers of instruments and sounds that all need to be carefully managed. I decided to take a different approach to Lazarus Laughed. There are very few elements, but those elements are routed through a complex web of delays and reverbs with chance elements thrown in. It was this web that needed managing, particularly in terms of its density. Once I was relatively happy with the direction it was simply a case of hitting play and recording the output, choosing the best takes for each of the three sections of the piece and stitching them together.

The name comes from a book by Wei Wu Wei, which is turn is taken from a 1925 play by Eugene O'Neill. To me, it's a comment on the cosmic joke that we're all a part of but spend most of our lives unaware of. Wake up! The name came last, even after the video, and it was probably inspired by the video. Perhaps now there is no death for humanity as we have created an eternal progeny in the form of AI, a child with more power than any laughing god we've imagined since the dawn of self-consciousness. It makes cool videos too.

5/5/23 ....PRAIRIE WINTERS.... Violence. Heritage. Familial Love.
An intense and brooding new work from Ábel M.G.E.

A vital part of making Prairie Winters was the many discussions with the Dogstar Dance Theatre team throughout the creation process. The latter half of the show, which features this soundtrack, shows us a breakdown suffered by the main character under the weight of conflicting pressures of familial and financial inheritance, her moral conviction, and her fractured sense of self.

We tried to put a pin on the nebulous ways these pressures and traumas impact a person, how they manifest, what memories they trigger–how a mental breakdown begins and how the ensuing spiral sounds, feels, and forces one to act.

Little things came up, the boredom and dishonesty of ordinary dinner conversations; the difficult patterns of the mind: how one threatening thought morphs into the next faster than one can keep up. My aim was to make music which was both a soundtrack and a manifestation of the central characters unresolved fears combined.

Prairie Winters, the latest offering from London-based Hungarian-American composer Ábel M.G.E., is a mesmerising and evocative work of electronic music. Created in collaboration with Dogstar Dance Theatre as the soundtrack to their dance-theatre work of the same name, the piece explores the shadow cast by heritage, familial love, and violence.

At its heart is the central character’s struggle to accept her inherited culture, wealth, and trauma, and the music Ábel has written expertly underscores this emotional journey. The soundscape is both haunting and beautiful: prevailing monochrome timbres slowly blossom then withdraw, and despite constant sonic evolution there's a sense of perpetual stasis to the piece.

As with much of Ábel’s work, Prairie Winters is a collaborative effort, bringing together the talents of dancers, directors, and choreographers to create an immersive, multi-layered experience. Whether you’re a fan of electronic, experimental, or contemporary classical music, this soul-stirring composition is sure to captivate and inspire.

Our first release of 2023 - Ayakashi by Audiobubble. Another genre-defying track from the UK composer/producer, Ayakashi blends hard-hitting synths and experimental electronica over an ever-present contemporary classical canvas. Musically esoteric, but an accessible listen nonetheless.

Ayakashi began life as an experiment in writing complex rhythms in a new markup language called Nestup. The track has two elements: those based entirely on this sophisticated rhythm (percussive, harmonic and melodic), and a contrasting layer of orchestral instruments playing slower, drawn-out phrases. The track develops and layers-up, but never deviates from these two paths.

I created the video for the track (https://mbmus.uk/AyakashiVideo) using new AI tech. I've had mixed feelings about the rise of AI art, but after playing around I realised that these interesting tools enable artists to explore other art forms and enhance their own work. There will, I believe (hope) always be a place for the creative human mind. I'll have to take that on the chin when text-prompt audio generation comes of age. I acted as the director of the video, guiding what felt like an incredibly creative ADHD mind (suits my own) as it generated short scenes, which I then stitched together.
