Cyril Scott Piano Sonata No. 1 performed by Simon Callaghan is now available on all major streaming services and available to buy on the Nimbus Records website;
https://www.wyastone.co.uk/cyril-scott-piano-sonata-no-1-at-dawn-pierrot-triste-no-1-srcd-437.html

Scott studied piano and composition in Frankfurt with Lazzaro Uzielli (a pupil of Clara Schumann) and Iwan Knorr. He soon fell under the spell of Symbolist poetry and Impressionist music, being dubbed the ‘English Debussy’. Scott’s worldly success was at its height in the years leading up to the first world war and he became a composer of both small and large pieces.

Simon Callaghan performs internationally as a soloist and chamber musician, in parallel with a highly successful career as a recording artist. Simon Callaghan’s distinguished and eclectic discography includes recordings for Hyperion, Nimbus and Lyrita among others.

This CD release has an approximate playing time of 40 minutes.

George Lloyd The Symphonies Nos. 7 - 12 out now on all major streaming platforms and available to buy from;
https://www.wyastone.co.uk/george-lloyd-the-symphonies-nos-7-12-conducted-by-the-composer-4cds-srcd-2418.html

George debuted his first symphony at just age 19 and came to national prominence with his first opera, Iernin in 1934. In the audience was Frank Howes, music critic of The Times, who was on holiday in the area. His review for the newspaper declared that Lloyd ‘showed the rarest of all qualities in a British composer, an almost unerring perception of what the stage requires’.

This 4 disc set has an approximate playing time of 4 hours 55 mins, and is the 2nd release in the new compilations of the George Lloyd recorded archive. With more releases from George Lloyd coming this year you don't want to miss out!

Alongside this release we are also releasing study scores for his Symphonies 1 -12 as well as scores for Charade, John Socman Overture, The Serf Suite No 1 and The Serf Suite No 2. All scores are available to buy and hire on the Nimbus Records website!

Our new February release is now available on the Nimbus Records website, and available for stream and download on all major streaming sites.

This release was composed by Christopher Brown and took 8 years to complete. It includes 24 preludes and fugues which Christopher asked family, friends and several institutions to commission, with many of the resultant commissioners asking for references to pieces of music that had special meaning to them.

“I wish to thank pianist Nathan Williamson for his enthusiasm, commitment and dedication to a project that has demanded from him huge resources of musicality and hard work. It has been a privilege and a joy working with him.” Christopher Brown

For anyone wondering how the premiere of Gavin Higgins new Horn Concerto went... here are some reviews for you to check out!

"Throughout, Higgins proves himself a master of tension and pacing, whether he’s building the music to a climax with piccolo and gong or playing with metrical accents. The orchestration is particularly inventive — the shrewd use of wooden percussion stands out — while the relationship between soloist and ensemble is constantly, fascinatingly shifting. Whether as a solitary, beautiful voice or one among many, in dialogue or in tandem with the orchestra, the soloist Ben Goldscheider did a sterling job, as did the BBC NOW — particularly its horn section — and the conductor Jaime Martin. From its opening exhale to the riot of hunting horn calls in the finale this concerto is a success." Rebecca Franks, The Times

"Gavin Higgins’ new work, premiered here, takes inspiration from the Forest of Dean, where he grew up. It was brought to vivid and organic life by Ben Goldscheider" Rian Evans, The Guardian

The Story of Lyrita

Lyrita Recorded Edition is one of the UK’s longest established and highest regarded independent Classical record labels. Lyrita has an unparalleled reputation for recording specifically British repertoire at the highest audio standards. For 50 years Lyrita has produced recordings acclaimed by critics, collectors and audiophiles alike. In 2006 Lyrita entered an exclusive agreement with Wyastone Estate Limited and virtually all the Lyrita recordings are now available on CD, many for the first time. The welcome accorded to these iconic recordings has been universal and remarkable: Simon Heffer, The Daily Telegraph “From the 1960s to the 1990s, those with a taste for obscure English classical composers, or for the obscure works of the well-known ones, needed only one port of call: Lyrita Records. For aficionados of the English canon the re-issue of this material is one of the great events in our musical history. It is like coming across long-buried treasure, and represents perhaps the finest exhibition our music has ever had.” Michael Cookson, musicweb-international “I have collected the majority of the Lyrita discs and the high standard of their performance and sound is cause for celebration. The growing number of British music lovers should make these Lyrita releases their first point of call.” Arthur Lintgen, Fanfare “By adhering faithfully to a formula designed to achieve the highest attainable quality for their recordings, Lyrita successfully produced a large catalogue with astounding musical interest and accessibility, despite its emphasis on new music of widely disparate styles. The performance and sonic values of these recordings virtually defined the state-of-the-art at the time they were originally released, and still stand up well against modern competition. I encourage you to embark on what will undoubtedly be a rewarding quest to find a vast treasure-trove of new music.” Rob Barnett, musicweb-international “Simon Gibson the [Abbey Road] transfer engineer held in his hands the impossibly exalted expectations of a generation or two of listeners and has met those expectations – long may he labour over those tapes.”
