Hertsmere Borough Council has been granted £273,000 in funding from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy for the next phase of the Green Homes Grant. The Local Authority Delivery Scheme aims to install energy saving improvements to an additional 25 homes across the borough, making them warmer and kinder to the environment.

Under the scheme, eligible homeowners can get up to £10,000 and private landlords up to £5,000 towards the cost of energy efficiency improvements.

The programme is being delivered through the Government's Green Homes Grant Local Authority Delivery Scheme, which aims to help the country achieve its net-zero carbon goal, while also helping households save money, stay warm, and reduce their carbon footprint.

More than 70 homeowners have already signed up to take advantage of the Green Homes Grant scheme.

The latest data from the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership shows that in the 2020/21 financial year, councils dealt with an additional 11,000 tonnes of dry recycling than the year before.

The data, presented at a recent meeting of the partnership, shows that recycling rates increased in seven of the 10 district and borough areas.

The district to record the highest recycling rate was St Albans, which at 64.2% was 1.2% higher than last year.

The biggest increase was in Watford, where it increased by 4.9% to 50.2%.

It shows that of the 276,379 tonnes of material collected from Hertfordshire homes for composting, recycling or reuse in 2020/21, 85.73% was recycled in the UK. No garden and food waste, glass, wood, cans or scrap metal was sent overseas but 3,340 tonnes of other materials were shipped to Europe, 34,301 tonnes to Asia and 683 tonnes to Africa.

Katy Waters, who lives in The Campions, had no choice but to take her cat Shelby to the vets last month because of the way she was behaving.

Katy took Shelby to Fernside Vets in the town centre where she learned her cat had swallowed a blade of grass measuring around 10cm.

She says she had to pay £260 to have the grass removed and relieve Shelby of her discomfort. We are glad to hear that Shelby is doing much better.

Hi all! The sun isn't the only thing that's out today. The Hertsmere Local Plan is too. I've been inundated with calls from residents who quite rightly feel very passionate about use of some of the proposed sites and also gravely concerned about how our local services will keep up. To make your voices heard, come to our Borehamwood meet this evening at 6.30pm, in the Mirzan Restaurant (134 Aycliffe Road, WD6 4DY), where we will be informally discussing your views and thoughts on other issues in the community. Can't wait to see you there🙂

In their letter, the group said: “Despite banning fur farming in 2000, the UK currently allows imports of tens of millions of pounds of animal fur each year.

"By continuing to allow the sale of fur, we are exercising a double standard, and effectively outsourcing animal cruelty."

Conservative MP Christian Wakeford, one of the prime movers behind the letter, said Brexit meant the UK could now “set a global example on animal welfare”. Previously, the Government had said a sales ban would be incompatible with EU rules.

Mr Wakeford said: “The UK has entered a new chapter in its trading relationship with the rest of the world. Banning fur sales will send a strong message that we intend to use this new beginning to set ourselves apart as world leaders in animal welfare.”

New stages are under construction at Elstree Studios. The base of the structures is now in place on the site of the former Big Brother House, next door to the George Lucas Stage.

"The unique thing about Elstree Studios is that it is owned by Hertsmere Borough Council which means that as more production revenue is brought in from the film industry, it eventually filters back into the community.''

Do you have a spare hour a week to help someone like Agnes* to recover and regain her confidence?

If you would like to find out more register your interest here: https://forms.gle/RSND6mmo76kLh8ma8

Agnes is 89 and was shielding throughout the first lockdown in March 2020. She was referred to Reach Out for befriending and support to go for short walks. Agnes has rarely left her home in the last 12 months other than medical appointments – so she lost a lot of her physical strength and mobility. She is very lonely and isolated.

After receiving the second dose of the COVID vaccine, Agnes decided to venture out to walk to her local park. She had not realised just how much the lockdown had affected her physical ability and she lost her balance and fell. She fractured her hip and had to have surgery. She is now on the road to recovery but has lost her confidence and is frightened that she might fall again.

We introduced Agnes to Support Volunteer Jodie*, who started by calling Agnes for a chat. As they got to know each other they began making plans to meet so that Jodie can support Agnes to get back to doing the things she enjoys. Agnes was provided with a temporary wheelchair whilst she recovered, and a few weeks ago, she and Jodie went to the park and to enjoy a takeaway coffee at the café there.

Over the next few weeks, Agnes was able to begin walking short distances. With Jodie there to encourage her and to carry her bag, her mobility has improved significantly, and Agnes is now able to walk in the park without any mobility aids.

When we first spoke with Agnes, she said that she was frightened that she would be left behind and forgotten about when lockdown lifted. When we spoke to her this week, she says that Jodie has been a lifesaver. With Jodie helping her, she doesn’t feel frightened anymore. She now has something to look forward to each week and is feeling hopeful for the first time in a very long time.

We spoke with Jodie to find out how she was feeling. She said that being part of Reach Out has enabled her to feel more part of her community. She is really pleased that she has been able to be of help and of value to someone in need. She really enjoys spending time with Agnes and feels it has been so rewarding to be part of Agnes’ journey to recovery.

For more information, you can contact Reach Out via email at [email protected] or by calling 01462 689403.
