Thank you for a lovely morning at Shenley Wood Retirement Village where I had wonderful conversations with residents & heard fascinating stories from their lives. So busy with talking to people, I forgot to take photos of them 😣 But I’ll be back for sure!

An orange or a banana?

My late mother used to tell a story about her years working at HMV in Oxford Street during the Second World War, when she was still a teenager. One of her tasks was to send records to HM Forces serving in Europe to provide them with some entertainment. After the war, she was delighted by a visit from one of the soldiers who had enjoyed the records she sent. He brought her a gift as a thank you for her work. The gift was special because rationing was still in place and fresh produce from overseas was a real rarity.

I heard this delightful anecdote many times, but I probably didn't listen properly and now I forget whether it was an orange or a banana, I don't know the name of the soldier, or any further details. So glad I remember the story though.

It was so gratifying to enable Louise to hear her late mother's voice again when I digitized a recording made on an old cassette tape. On the recording her mother is reading a story to her granddaughter. The granddaughter has recently had a baby, and will now be able to share her grandma's storytelling with her own daughter.

Louise said: 'It was so emotional hearing my mum's voice again after so many years. She passed away 21 years ago and it was lovely to hear her. I can just picture her with my niece sitting on her knee reading the story to her. Thank you Caroline, listening to it brought tears to my eyes.”

Most of us have photos, videos or other keepsakes to remind us of happy times with people we love. Sadly it’s not until we lose someone that we might realise just how much the sound of their voice is missed. Here Helen Singer writes about her surprise and delight at unexpectedly finding recordings of her parents’ voices:

'After my parents, Hanna and Peter Singer, died within six months of each other, I really wished that I could hear their voices again. My wish was granted through the chance discovery of interviews carried out with them during the 1990s about their lives as refugees from the Holocaust that were housed in the EXILE archive at the University of London.

It was so lovely to hear my parents speaking about their experiences of settling into life in the UK, including lots of details that I had never heard before because I never really asked them enough questions. The sound of their voices was wonderful to hear, and so very poignant.

I am so grateful to have these precious recordings and would recommend recording relatives’ voices while it’s still possible so you too can have this precious gift. You may also find out things that you never knew, as we did!’

What an amazing weekend of being part of the Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire’s Entrepreneurs Challenge at the Hertfordshire County Show. We made connections, met new people from diverse backgrounds, networked til the cows came home (pun intended - it’s essentially an agricultural show, after all!) and presented on stage, which would have been a more terrifying prospect not that long ago. Thanks to the lovely bunch of fellow finalists, as well as clients, friends and family who came to support us, and especially STANTA for their ongoing encouragement.
