In the latest episode of Amorous Histories you can hear Alex Collinson talk about Margaret Leeson, so who was she? 💘

The following text is quoted from the Women's Museum of Ireland and was written by Karyn Moynihan:

"Margaret Leeson, also known as Peg Plunkett, was Dublin’s most famous brothel madam in eighteenth-century Ireland. Clever, witty and beautiful, she was a leading figure in the hedonism set of Georgian Dublin and counted lords, lawyers and con-men among her clientele. Born in Westmeath in 1727, Peg’s ailing father left her abusive brother Christopher in charge of the house after their mother’s death and Peg soon fled to Dublin to escape. She took up with a Mr Dardis, who got her pregnant and set her up with a house. When she lost the child, however, the man and home soon followed. After this she was ‘kept’ by a wine merchant, but before long became the kept mistress of a Mr Leeson.

Peg took his last name without ever marrying him, but was thrown out when he discovered that she’d been carrying on with other men [...] One of the men in question was a Mr Lawless, who Peg went on to have a tempestuous relationship with. They fought relentlessly, both falling prey to wild jealousy."

"Peg and her lover parted ways when he sailed off to America, leaving her heartbroken. She then set up her first brothel with her right-hand-woman and fellow courtesan, Sally Hayes. The house was located on Drogheda Street, but was vandalised one night by a notorious Dublin gang [...] Peg took the gang leader to court, winning damages, and moved her establishment to Wood Street, before eventually settling in Pitt Street, on what is now the site of the Westbury Hotel."

"After 30 years of running the brothel, Peg decided to reform her ways and retire to Blackrock. Unfortunately for her, the IOUs from wealthy men that she had stacked up over the years proved worthless and she wound up in a debtor’s prison. In order to raise money, she decided to write her memoirs, which put the fear of God into Dublin’s social circles. The first two volumes were a hit, but Peg dies in 1797, aged 70, before the third volume had been published."

New episode alert! 🥳

I was lucky enough to talk to Alex Collinson, a third year PhD student at Newcastle University, last summer. In this episode we’ll be talking about her project, The S*x Workers’ Revolution: Prostitution and Feminism in Women’s writing, 1787-1801, and more broadly about women, s*x work, virtue and motherhood in eighteeth century England and Ireland.

Give it a listen, wherever you get your podcasts! 🎙

So I may have forgotten that my job as a festival producer would mean that I would be MIA during September and October, my apologies 😅

But the festival is over now and my brain has recovered (mostly) so normal, mildly chaotic podcasting will resume!

Pictured: and artist Olivier Grossetête built Thomas Wolsey's college out of cardboard boxes. Wolsey had plans to build a school in Ipswich that would be as prestigious as Eton or Wi******er, this didn’t happen. Work started in the school in 1528, but by 1530 Wolsey was disgraced and dead so Ipswich is left with the remains of a very nice tutor gatehouse. Anyway as part of SPILL Festival the Ipswich community came together over a week to build the cardboard college and then ceremoniously tear it down and jump all over it. Great fun was had by all 🏰

Everyone's favourite "other woman" 💋

Lady Elizabeth Christiana Hervey, Lady Elizabeth Foster, later Duchess of Devonshire (1759-1824). You may know her as Bess.

🖼 Angelica Kauffman (1786)

From the info board at : Lady Elizabeth Christiana Hervey, affectionately called 'Bess', is best known for her participation in the scandalous 'ménage à trois with the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. She married John Thomas Foster in 1776 and lived with him at Ickworth. However, she fled the abusive marriage in 1782 and shortly after met the Devonshires.

Bess lived at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, with William, Duke of Devonshire and his wife Georgiana until the Duchess's death. Three years later, with Georgiana's approval, Bess married the Duke of Devonshire herself.

The miniature hanging around Bess neck is said to be of Georgiana, showing the close nature of their relationship.

Outlander was quickly dubbed 'R**elander' by fans after a disproportionate amount of r**es and s*xual assaults were shown in the TV series.

Characters are regularly submitted to s*xual assault, r**e, attempted r**e, and s*xual coercion. Across the 7 seasons there are approximately 25 depictions of this sort.

Some argue that these depictions of r**e are a necessary part of the show, some say it is gratuitous and exploitative.

I discuss this and more with .taddeo and .byrne.14 in the latest episode of Amorous Histories.

What are your thoughts on 'R**elander'?

03/09/2023

R**e in Period Drama Television by Dr Julie Taddeo and Dr Katherine Byrne, examines how r**e and r**e myths are portrayed in some of the most significant recent TV period dramas, such as Poldark and Outlander. Period drama on TV has frequently featured s*xual violence and continues to do so either as an attempt to give authenticity and realism to the programme, or as a sensationalist strategy to boost viewership. 📺

Taddeo and Byrne argue that r**e functions as an “anti-heritage” device that seeks to reduce the misplaced sentimentality evoked by period drama TV, and instead reflect a modern-day society characterised by the and movements. R**e in Period Drama Television explores the (sometimes harmful) assumptions and beliefs which audiences continue to hold about r**e, rapists, and victims.

It's a really interesting read and for me it certainly highlighted some ideas I had not thought of before, and some of my own bias’s from growing up in the godawful patriarchy.

To hear more about r**e in period drama TV listen to the latest episode of Amorous Histories with Dr Julie Taddeo and Dr Katherine Byrne wherever you get your podcasts. 🎙

🎉 New podcast episode 🎉

Today is a special episode as I have Dr Julie Taddeo and Dr Katherine Byrne joining me to talk about their 2022 book R**e in Period Drama Television: Consent, Myth, and Fantasy. We will be discussing representations of r**e in TV shows such as Outlander, Poldark, Harlots, Bridgerton, Banished and more.

Dr Julie Taddeo is a Research Professor of British History at the University of Maryland in the USA. She has published multiple books and articles on topics including the Bloomsbury Group and British modernism; the British novelists Catherine Cookson and Anne Perry; Steampunk; and British period drama TV.

Dr Katherine Byrne teaches English at Ulster University in Northern Ireland, and has published many books and articles about period drama, Victorian literature and medicine, women’s writing, and the Gothic. Thanks again to both of them for joining me!

Apologies for the poor audio quality from my mic, I clearly sat in an area of the house with poor wifi, baby podcaster lesson learned!

Testimony given by Mary Robinson about Princess Seraphina (aka John Cooper) at Thomas Gordon's trial in London, July 1732 👒

“Another Time, he comes to me, and says, "Lord, Madam, I must ask your Pardon, I was at your Mantua-maker's Yesterday, and dress'd my Head in your Lac'd Pinners, and I would fain have borrow'd them to have gone to the Ridotto at Vauxhall last Night, but I cou'd not persuade her to lend 'em me; but however she lent me your Callimanco Gown and Madam Nuttal's Mob [cap], and one of her Smocks, and so I went thither to pick up some Gentlemen to Dance."

"And did you make a good Hand of it, Princess?" says I.

"No, Madam," says he, "I pick'd up two Men, who had no Money, but however they proved to be my old Acquaintance, and very good Gentlewomen they were. One of them has been transported for counterfeiting Masquerade Tickets; and t'other went to the Masquerade in a Velvet Domine, and pick'd up an old Gentleman, and went to Bed with him, but as soon as the old Fellow found that he had got a Man by his Side, he cry'd out, `Murder'."”

Eighteenth Century tickets for the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens 🎊

John Cooper, aka Princess Seraphina, enjoyed going to masquerades dressed in women's clothes. Cross-dressing and fancy dress were not uncommon at 18th century masquerades. This allowed for a lot of naughtiness including s*x work and q***r hook-ups 💃

According to testimony given at Thomas Gordon's trial, Princess Seraphina attended the Ridotto al Fresco held at Vauxhall Gardens in June 1732. Seraphina was wearing Mary Robinson's "Callimanco Gown and Madam Nuttal's Mob [cap], and one of her Smocks."

NEW EPISODE ALERT 🎉 Once again we’re travelling back to the 18th century, undeniably my favourite time period. We’re in 1730s London with gentleman’s servant and OG drag queen John Cooper, also known as Princess Seraphina.

Rictor Norton, the granddaddy of q***r British history scholars, introduces Seraphina on his website as quote “the first recognizable drag queen in English history, that is the first gay man for whom dragging it up was an integral part of his identity” 💃

In her book 'Dress Codes' fashion theorist Ruth Rubenstein wrote about “tie-signs”, these are fashion based signals that tie historically marginalised groups together.

She notes that, quote “[i]ndividuals adopt the attire to announce commitment to the group and are aware that it places them outside the confines of established and institutional order.”

Members of the LGBTQ+ community have historically used tie-signs to identify themselves to others. Examples include; handkerchiefs, rings, piercings, the Labrys, the Lambda, pride flags, monkey boots, short nails, violets, lilacs, lavendar, and green carnations.

What are some of your favourite tie-signs? 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️

In the newest episode I’m a**lysing the q***r-coded costumes of The Judgement Day, a group of fictional WWE wrestlers who've formed a (temporary) alliance. The group, currently on Raw, is made up of Damien Priest, Finn Bálor, Rhea Ripley and Dominic Mysterio 🤼‍♀️

The characters of this group are currently villains (or heels in wrestling speak) within the storyline. The Judgement Day’s fashion choices primarily include black and purple materials, they are clad in leather and PVC, they accessorise with studs, chains, dark make-up, piercings, handkerchiefs and chunky boots.

06/08/2023

The “hanky code” or “flagging” was popularised in 1970’s and 80’s USA. It's primarily used by gay men to signal what and who they’re into via hanky colour and placement 👖

For example if a hanky is in your left pocket that indicates you’re a sub/bottom, and if it’s in your right that indicates you’re a dom/top.

Generally the colour codes are as follows red: fi***ng; orange: anything goes; yellow: water sports (p*e stuff); green: es**rt work; light blue: oral s*x; dark blue: a**l s*x; purple: piercing; grey: bo***ge; black: S*M; and brown: s**t play (p**p stuff). And different geographical locations seem to have specific variations on that. If you’re curious give it a Google.

Rhea’s character gives off some pretty impressive le***an vibes. Not only because of the fe**sh fashion but all the other q***r signals including the sensible footwear (boots and trainers), thumb rings, short hair, an undercut, and short nails. Yes some of these are stereotypes, but they’re born out of real historical and contemporary signifiers.
