10.30am-11.30am: Devon History Matters with Dr Todd Gray (Auditorium) Tickets needed.

Only by examining the past can we hope to grasp the nature of modern society and anticipate the future. In this far-reaching lecture Dr Gray calls upon more than forty years of unparalleled archival work which has resulted in some fifty versatile and highly-original books on Devon. He will demonstrate how the discovery of previously unknown documents has significantly altered how we view Devon’s past and will reveal others that challenge our assumptions about ourselves and the past.

Returning in 2024, the English Riviera Literature Festival is curated by the team at the Palace Theatre in Paignton. The packed programme will include literary-themed events, workshops and fascinating talks on a range of interesting subjects including local history by
well-known local authors and speakers. Please check the website for the full programme: https://www.palacetheatrepaignton.co.uk/

At last we seem to have found a way forward with Amazon and customers wishing to buy through their site can search for the new book details and then chose the "other sellers" on Amazon compare NEW 2 from button below the add to basket area and chose us through that route. Thank you

05/11/2023

PLEASE NOTE - AMAZON We are aware that some customers like to buy through Amazon but they are currently INCORRECTLY stating long delivery dates of May 2024 for the new book. This is obviously wrong and an error but they seem unable to correct it at the moment.

APPLEDOR BOOK FESTIVAL

TALK: BARNSTAPLE’S GOLDEN AGE. 19 Sept. 2023, 11.30am
Dr Todd Gray MBE makes a welcome return to the festival, where he will be talking about recent discoveries in Barnstaple's history. The book 'Barnstaple 1640-1670' focuses on a period in which North Devon prospered on the sales of its pottery and woollen cloth to markets throughout Europe. These 17th century endeavours fundamentally changed the town and produced extraordinary ornamental plasterwork. Todd is a historian who has published widely on Devon. He is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Exeter and in 2016 was given the Freedom of Exeter for his contribution to the study of local history.

As we approach the anniversary of the late Queen's passing we have been contacted by a lady who thinks her Mum ( Lorna Phyllis Barker ) is the patient in the bed in this photograph of Todds book, Queen Elizabeth II in Exeter, on page 35. It's a shame you cannot see her more clearly. She would be about 47 years old. Does anyone remember? Or do you recognise the nurses, or have any further information? We would love to hear from you.
