Comparing attack times of some bus compressors? Is the 0.03ms attack of the API2500 really that fast? SSL G Bus, Brainworx Vertigo VSC-2, and the API2500. How do they compare? SSL - very fast on it's lowest setting and what you'd expect for a peak compressor on it's highest 30ms setting. Brainworx Vertigo VSC-2 - This is a version of the SSL with some added features. Compression - How does Peak and RMS mode affect the attack? All compressors are the same when it comes to the attack phase, right?..........Wrong! Make sure you're not trying to control fast transients with an RMS compressor. Peak mode reacts to fast transients, as they approach or cross the threshold. Instant reaction based on peak level. RMS mode ignores fast transients, because in RMS mode, the compressor needs a short amount of time to calculate the RMS value, which is the amount of 'energy' above threshold over a certain amount of time (that period of time will be specific to that compressor). How do attack times compare? What does the attack phase of classic fixed attack time compressors look like? LA2A, DBX160, Fairchild 660 and the VComp. How do they compare to the Logic compressor? LA2A - around 10ms, with a fsat phase and then a slower phase. DBX160 - RMS compressor, with a small waiting time to calculate the RMS value. Fairchild 660 - Fast with a lot of distortion.
