This weekend the cyclocross riders were to the fore in the Dwars door het Hageland. The men's race was truly exciting with regular crosser and former Gravel World Champion Gianni Vermeersch coming out on top.

In the women's race, Lucinda Brand triumphed. The former cyclocross world champion finished ahead of another former cyclocross world champion Thalita de Jong. Sanne Cant and Ceylin Alvarado were there too to make four former world champions.

Sadly, the women's race was not broadcast. We'll just have to do with this pic of Lucinda Brand.

Isn't cycling the best of sports? On Sunday I was out in the beautiful countryside the spans the border between the UK's Hamsphire and West Sussex. A journey of hills, few cars and outstanding scenery and the odd waterfall.

By Tuesday I was pedalling out to race at the Goodwood motor circuit with the elite boys. Most of whom are half my age. It was quick and on a pan flat circuit I reached 60.9 km/h and we averaged over 47 km/h. I clung on having enjoyed the effort and experience. Then it was an easy ride home and watch the Giro d'Italia.

Tuesday, 14 May is the start of the misnamed Quatre Jours de Dunkerque. The Four Days of Dunkirk has been run over at least five days since 1963. As usual, this year's six-day event hovers around the Franco-Belgian border without ever straying across.

The most important stage will be Saturday's run from Arques to Cassel, where Mick Searle's classic image is taken from.

Live TV coverage starts on Tuesday at 15:00 UK time on Eurosport or Discovery+.

We love the Giro d’Italia. The Tour de France might garner all the publicity and coverage in the papers but we think the Giro beats it hands-down any day.

Read our Giro d'Italia 2024 Guide for all the details on how and when to watch on TV, plus key stages, profiles and some unusual facts about the Giro.

Although Tadej Pogačar is the stand-out favourite, we've identified nine of the twenty-one stages as having the potential to influence the final result so it won't be short of action.

Who was Rijden's top rider of the 2024 Spring Classics? Last year it was Mathieu van der Poel ahead of Tadej Pogačar.

But who was this year’s King of the Spring Classics? Was it Van der Poel, Pogačar or Philipsen? Between them, they won all of the monuments.

Why do we think unsung Dylan Vandenstorme is a bit of a hero? And which were the best and worst performing teams? We cast our eye over the under as well as the overachievers.

We like facts here at Rijden so we’ve pushed the results of twenty one-day races through our supercomputer to come up with the definitive answers as to who was the top dog and who were the also-rans.

Love them or loathe them, commentators are a fundamental part of our TV cycling experience. They divide opinion. Carlton Kirby, for example, has Facebook groups that declare their love for him whilst others demand his removal from our screens. What’s it really like being a commentator?

We spoke to Marty Macdonald who is Eurosport’s number-one for cyclocross and women’s racing. We find out how Lizzie Deignan made him cry, how he stumbled into commentating and why Mathieu van der Poel has him reaching for his thesaurus.

Alpecin-Deceuninck’s domination of the Spring Classics took a bit of a hit at Brabantse Pijl and the Amstel Gold Race. Quinten Hermans could ‘only’ finish sixth at Brabantse Pijl whilst red-hot favourite Mathieu van der Poel proved he is fallible when he finished anonymously in the Amstel Gold Race.

It was a day of underperformance for the team of the Spring Classics as he was soon down to only Hermans to support him from his Alpecin-Deceuninck team. Not that it’s changed the rider leaderboard. In fact, in the absence of Pedersen and Philipsen, Van der Poel increased his lead yet further.

Tom Pidcock is up sixteen places to sixth overall. He could make the top three overall if he performs well in the final two races. Marc Hirschi, Tiesj Benoot, the energetic and popular Mauri Vansevenant, Paul Lapeira and Valentin Madous all jumped up the leaderboard as a result of their rides at the Amstel Gold Race.

The nodding donkey style of Vansevenant saw a rise of 209 places and Lapeira enjoyed a 502 place jump.

It's the last week of the Spring Classics and as always it signs off with a bang.
Monday to Friday it's the Tour of the Alps.

Wednesday it's La Fleche and Sunday it's the grand mommy of them all - the Old Lady, Liege Bastogne Liege.

Don't despair, Rijden's guide to our favourite grand tour will be out soon. Look out for our TV guide to the Giro - hitting the internet shelves soon.

We've chosen Bernard Hinault as our poster boy in honour of his epic snowstorm win of 1980.

Alpecin-Deceuninck’s domination of the Spring Classics continues after another 1-2 at Paris Roubaix and Phlipsen’s second place in the Scheldeprijs. The King of the Classics top three of Van der Poel, Philipsen and Mads Pedersen is unchanged. That was exactly how they crossed the line in the Roubaix stadium.

Van der Poel is scheduled to ride the Amstel Gold Race and Liege-Bastogne-Liege whilst Philipsen is only down to ride at Amstel Gold.

Only one of these two can become the King of the Spring Classics 2024 and Van der Poel is in the hot seat.

Big risers were Groupama-FDJ duo Stefan Kung up fourteen places into the top ten and Laurence Pithie who gained 27 places. He lies one place ahead of Gianni Vermeersch who rose 66 places to sit 26th overall.

Norwegian cyclist Søren Wærenskjold shot up 658 places thanks to his ninth at Paris-Roubaix and sixth at Scheldeprijs.

Lots more cycling action this week starting with the Giro d'Abruzzo stage race. If that's not a race you're familiar with it's because it hasn't been held since 2007. It potentially offers some beautiful climbing countryside with a mountain top finish on Thursday.

There's a gaggle of minor French races as well as classics Brabantse Pijl on Wednesday and the highlight of the Amstel Gold Race on Sunday. This week sees the switch over from the cobbled classics to the final couple of weeks of the Spring Classics which culminates with the Ardennes races.

We've chosen Mr Amstel Gold Jan Raas as our poster boy. Raas won his home race on five occasions.

The Tour of the Basque Country is a super hilly six-day stage race that ends when the overall winner is awarded a traditional Basque beret. The stages are often short, hilly and invariably steep. The race tends to be the preserve of tour riders but that didn’t stop classics hardman Sean Kelly from winning three times.

In 1984 he won the five-day, six-stage edition that finished on the Friday, having won three of the stages. Then on the Sunday of that week, he triumphed at Paris-Roubaix. In 1986 he repeated the same feat. Try suggesting to classic specialists today that the Tour of the Basque Country is good preparation for Paris-Roubaix.

After Ronde van Vlaanderen, Mathieu van der Poel has leapfrogged his teammate Jasper Philipsen to move on top. That could change again after Scheldeprijs. Mads Pedersen is down to third whilst the impressive Luca Mozzato pings up 16 places into fourth overall.

Other big risers were Magnus Sheffield and Dylan Teuns who moved up 106 places.

What was really noticeable about the results of De Ronde was how many riders who’d been up the front until the Koppenberg crumpled in the final forty kilometres.

Thanks to scoring third, fourth, fifth and twelfth places at De Ronde, UAE Team Emirates are back on top of the team rankings. Alpecin-Deceuninck stays second whilst Lidl-Trek is bumped to third.

After Dwars door Vlaanderen, Jasper Philipsen stays on top but the real change was not where people finished but where they didn’t. With Wout van Aert and Jasper Stuyven out for the Spring Classics and question marks hanging over the fate of Mads Pedersen, it looks like Philipsen or teammate Van der Poel are assured of overall victory.

Jonas Abrahamsen, Stefan Kung, Tiesj Benoot, Dries de Bondt and Josh Tarling all shot up the rider rankings.

After Gent-Wevelgem, Jasper Philipsen stays on top but Tadjej Pogačar has been bumped down to fourth. Up ten places, after his win at Gent-Wevelgem comes Mads Pedersen into second place with Mathieu van der Poel hot on his heels in third.

The biggest riser was Jonathan Milan who shot up 519 places to move into 26th place. After his fantastic ride at Gent-Wevelgem, we expect him to keep climbing up the rankings. Third place at Gent-Wevelgem helped Jordi Meeus climb 114 places into 16th place.

Lidl-Trek and Alpecin-Deceuninck take over the two top spots demoting UAE Team Emirates to third.
