For many businesses, making a video to promote their product or service is completely outside of their experience.
Luckily, there are many great video production companies who will create a fantastic video. They look great, but they just have music overlaid.

Often companies, don’t realise just how impactful a voice over is on their message particularly when 95% of consumers believe a video should be less than two minutes. So it’s critical to use a professional voice artist who will deliver your message that communicates to your audience on every level.
And the first question to ask is what’s the purpose of the project?

I’ve had a couple of interesting discussions with clients this year about how to go about deciding on which voice is best suited to their project. As a starting point they think they’d prefer a female voice over a male voice, but are not sure why. They like a certain accent because they think its works well with their brand or their audience, but their choice isn’t backed up with any evidence of impact, click throughs or conversions.
This got me thinking that businesses looking to make a video are going about it the wrong way and they should be asking questions about their product, service or brand, before asking questions about the type of voice over artist. So, I’ve put together 5 short videos to help businesses thinking about choosing a voice over artist and here’s the first.

Whether Motion graphics, whiteboard, screencast or traditional animation, explainer videos are 1 -3 minutes which explain about a service, product or about the company. They’re extremely effective because they combine engaging audio and visual storytelling in a simple and understandable way. No wonder they are one of the most popular forms of marketing.

The most common voiceover style for explainer videos is the conversational style, because the explainer video is, after all, a story. And a professional voice talent will add subtle nuances such as a touch of humour, authority, wryness or a slightly inspirational tone.

Perhaps because I’m immersed in my business that I’m still surprised when someone asks, “What does a voiceover artist do?" After giving them examples which relate to their everyday life – radio & TV ads, audiobooks, that “how to” video they watched on Youtube, etc they get it, but the discussion often ends there.

When I try to continue the conversation by asking whether they’ve ever thought about using a voiceover for their business, I’m met with a bemused shake of their head. I then try to engage them by suggesting they might want to consider having a video made, say, explaining their services, or their product, and drop in a couple of stats such as 84% of people say that they’ve been convinced to buy a product or service by watching a brand’s video, or that 85% of businesses use video as a marketing tool.
It feels as if there’s a lot of businesses, particularly small ones, who’ve never considered it.

How to find the best voice actor for your project.

When did you last check your voicemail message?

If it’s more than a couple of months ago give it a listen.

Does it represent you and your brand? Try writing the script in a style that reflects you and your business.

Is it to the point or does it contain too much information? Just let callers know you can't take their call right now and invite them to leave a message.

Does it sound professional? Dial in and have a listen as there may be ums and ahhs, or a mispronunciation.

And don't forget to smile when recording!

I must confess here, that it was only when I started writing a blog article, did I realise I hadn’t recorded a personalised message on my mobile and what callers heard when they rang was my mobile company’s message delivered by a Northern middle-aged man: It couldn’t be further from my female Southern accent. And my business is my voice!

This year for International Women's Day a Brockley-based initiative called Fabric is celebrating the women of Brockley by creating a series of postcards that showcase their creativity – and they’re inviting YOU to take part! The theme is simple: WOMAN! And you can express yourself in any way that can be put on the front of a postcard – illustration, collage, photography, poetry, micro-stories, etc. All contributions will be featured in an exhibition at the Lewisham Art House in March (COVID-pending) and the 10 winning postcards will be printed and distributed to 2000 households in Brockley on International Women's Day! This is an experiment in female creativity, open to any and everyone who identifies as a woman and is from, living in or working in the Brockley area.
