It’s TWC’s third birthday 🎉 and there’s no one quite like Dame Prue Leith as the perfect guest to join me for this landmark episode (in retrospect maybe I should have made a request for cake from the Queen of Bake Off)!

From championing for change on big topics such as assisted dying, to feeling more alive with colour or encouraging shortcuts like tinned custard and frozen pastry for her new cookbook, Prue really is the powerhouse of positive assertion for living life on your terms.

Prue has been advocating for change in our laws to aid dying with dignity and in true Prue style she makes this rather controversial subject, so human, compelling and compassionate that you’ll want to learn and discuss further.

Rocking a latex dress in her 80s, Prue graced the catwalk for Fashion Week this year. We chat about ageing with style and colour & how you can bring in the sunshine and confidence by wearing it ☀️

I had the most fun chatting with Prue. Happy pod-birthday TWC, and thank you Prue for being such a wonderful birthday episode guest!

If I told you that this week’s episode might have you training a new habit every time you’re waiting at a red light, could you guess what it is? You’ll have to listen to find out, but it’s a good one!

For many of us, our teens and early adult years were filled with the idea of fitness for aesthetics, the idea that food could be bad, and the ‘mummy wine’ club being a place to find refuge.

Through her own experience in perimenopause, this week’s guest Kate Rowe Ham, realised that not only was there not enough quality information about how to eat and exercise to support our bodies at this time, but that we’re battling some mindsets that need to change too.

This episode is ‘more energy, more passion’ from start to finish and as Kate says, while not all the advice is for everyone, there is definitely a bit of advice here for everyone.

In my last episode Susan Saunders spoke about protecting your brain health for longevity, this week we’re about working with your body to ensure that your old age is a mobile and independent one.

We really are giving pro-ageing the whole mind and body holistic double punch this season! Enjoy, and do let me know what your favourite takeaways are from this episode.

What can we do to protect our brain health as we age so that we can enjoy our life to its fullest?

According to Susan Saunders, this week’s guest and brain health coach, learning to dance is a great step, which is terrific news if you’re inspired by this season’s Strictly Come Dancing 💃

Motivated by caring for her own mother with dementia, Susan began researching ways to reduce her own risk and now helps women in midlife through her work.

Midlife is a time when we can see our brains being affected by hormonal changes. Susan shares a holistic approach to managing brain health for this time in our lives and beyond, to give us a beacon through the brain fog!

From practical tips on how to keep our brains actively learning, like dancing, to managing the all-important gut-brain connection, there are so many takeaways in this episode that you can start applying today.

Modern life is fast-paced, with fast food yet sedentary pastimes, and our brains need a boost if we want to age in line with our expectations. Susan estimates that we may be able to reduce our risk of dementia by up to 45% with a healthy lifestyle.

So if you are curious to learn what simple changes you can make or share with someone you love, have a listen to see how you can boost your brain power!

I’ll bet that some of you ‘new members’ this empty nest club are still feeling a bit raw and missing your chicks.

Hopefully you’ve found strategies to help you cope with the feeling of loss whether that’s making sure you’re meeting friends, getting into a new hobby, joining a club, going back to work or volunteering. Whatever helps you deal with that sense of loss of purpose and potential loneliness is good.

Because two of my three adult kids live or study in the States, my husband and I have come up with an annual trip so that we can all reconnect. It’s fun but not quite the same as Christmas when they want to catch up with their friends and there’s a steady influx of guests and extended family so that time is squeezed.

Every year, we plan a long weekend for the five of us to get together. One rule - no partners allowed, no matter how much we love them too - because this is about nuclear connection, not just for us as parents to blissfully self indulge in some ‘kid’ time but also for geographically distanced siblings to stay up late chatting, giggling and messing about, without having to worry if their partners are feeling included/bored/wanting to do something else. (And Ben, Preston, Jack if you’re reading this post you know we LOVE spending time with you too!).

Last week we spent a gorgeous weekend in New York. The sun shone. We ate bagels in Central Park, drank cocktails in speakeasys, watched jazz in a West Village club and took in an amazing show on Broadway. We all agreed by Sunday, thousands of steps walked (including across Brooklyn Bridge and around Dumbo), that it was one of the best weekends for us a family.

Finding connection points as our children grow is so important for us as parents and for them as brothers and sisters, because one day we won’t be around and I want them to be there for each other.

What do you do to maintain connection and bonding within your family when they’ve left the nest?

If you missed founder Judith Spruzs’ interview with on the Tuesday afternoon show discussing the menopause, you can now listen to the podcast recap through our Listen Library on Brooklands radio.co.uk

Judith gives a brilliant ‘101’ on what the menopause is, how it affects half the population, what you can do to relieve symptoms, what HRT is - and answers listeners questions.

HRT can have many benefits for women beyond alleviating menopause symptoms including cardiovascular health, protecting the brain/cognitive function, protecting against osteoporosis and balancing mood.

However HRT may not be the answer for all women and there are many other ways of managing peri and menopause through diet, lifestyle, exercise and supplements so it’s best to explore all options to find what works for you.

There are so many resources available on the menopause. Here’s a few that may be useful:

The British Menopause Society
NHS Menopause Information website
Menopausing & Me on Facebook

Above all, don’t suffer! Talk to your GP, find support online and get the help you need.

As part of World Menopause Day awareness I interviewed Judith Spruzs, owner and founder of Menopause Health in Longcross for Brooklands Radio chatting about, surprise surprise, the menopause!

What was the one word that Jess Buchanan heard during her kidnap that let her know this was possibly going to be OK?

I was delighted when Jess agreed to join me for a chat, her story of kidnap, captivity and escape is truly awe inspiring and I have been a keen follower of her work since our first online meeting.

Jess’s story is powerful, not just by the extremes that her experience took her and her fellow captive through, but by the learnings, lessons and incredible resilience she fostered in those 93 days.

These are life lessons that she shares, not just lessons for life threatening situations and there are many tools and tips we’ve talked about in previous episodes that Jess called upon to survive her ordeal; meditation, breathwork, visualising, gratitude.

Jess’s story is not just one of resilience, it is a story of empathy, forgiveness, curiosity and connection. As she says “things happen for us, not to us”, which is a mindset that has the power to transform our thinking if we just allow it.

I’m humbled by her experience and honoured that she would share her learnings with me for you to enjoy.

Do take a break in your day to listen Jess and I - a truly awe-inspiring woman!

The slower seasons are here and my guest this week invites us to savour the hibernation mode without retreating. Could this episode transform your thinking about the next few months and make them a self care cocoon that you cherish?

Suzy Reading is an author and psychologist whose latest book “Self Care for Winter” is a must read for anyone who feels that winter is a fallow season for the soul.

We start by turning the concept of self care being selfish into essential self advocacy that is fundamental to your wellbeing. Winter offers a time to rest, just as the natural world around us demonstrates.

There are so many really great insights and practical tips that Suzy shares with her delightful energy! From yoga nidra, to sleep supplements and what you should focus on when you struggle to sleep.

We also take a tip from the Swedish and I shall certainly be adding fika into my day throughout the winter! Curious to know more?

Pop the kettle on, find your cosy place and enjoy a captivating chat that will have you thoroughly excited for the months ahead.

I’d love to hear your top tips for winter self care…what do you love about this season?

Today’s guest, Donna Ashworth, celebrating her new billboard in Edinburgh!

I HAVE A BILLBOARD!!!!

Much excitement today, racing to Edinburgh to meet my new billboard! I can’t explain the feeling, it is beyond wondrous.

Sadly, by the time we arrived, the Scottish weather had ripped off all of the tear-off poems and cast them to the four corners of the city 😬! I had planned to hand them out and meet some new friends but hey-ho…( I say this casually, as though I didn’t have a childlike inward tantrum - spoiler alert, I did). Alas, I am still not immune to petulance in my advancing years. 😁

I have a plan for this month of October to start allocating daily pages on every post (as opposed to the specific daily page posts). Sometimes the gods of social media see me replying to too many comments and ban me from doing any more, so hopefully this will out-fox them!

So keep up your comments and likes please, so I can see you and choose you a page. 🙏

If you don’t have a copy yet, please do consider getting one, it means the world, I promise you that. And if you do have one - your warm reviews are like a hug.

Thank you!!!

I’ll start on this post by the way… sneakily so I’m not seen 😂🧡📙

My next guest has seen her stock skyrocket thanks in part to her passion for the poetic use of words. There is huge bravery in baring your soul through creative expression such as poetry and for Donna Ashworth, the payoff has been huge!

Donna’s recent book, Growing Brave, immediately went to number two in the bestseller’s chart and her popularity within her Instagram community speaks to the importance that poetry now has in our fast paced digital world.

Bravery is a theme for this season of TWC and we can often believe it exists only for the ‘big’ things, but bravery is a tool we can use every day. Donna and I discuss how small acts of everyday courage can move us in powerful ways.

I love Donna’s term ‘dopamine dressing’ - she defines it so beautifully early in this episode. Bravery in being bold and bright in your clothing is just one small act of courage you can make. Donna describes how this choice not only lifts her spirits, but impacts positively on people she encounters - even in grumpy old London!

This was such a heartwarming and lifting conversation. I’m so delighted to share this with you and would love to hear what acts of courage you make as a result of listening!

💛 Stay tuned to the very end for a beautiful reading by Donna of one of the most popular poems of the book about women (hint: it’s also Davina McCall’s favourite!).

“I always…..I never….I wish…” the power of words has a potent effect on our wellbeing, especially those that we say to ourselves. What are the words and phrases you say about yourself to yourself, I wonder? I’ve certainly given my inner monologue a closer review after this week’s enlightening chat!

My guest, Donna Ashworth, went from blogger and part-time poet to bestselling author, after one of her poems was brought to life in a celebrity- filled Instagram post during lockdown. Quite the midlife pivot!

This episode celebrates the journey of every midlife woman - from accepting your emotions, the healing power of creative expression, showing up with bravery (no matter how small it may seem)....and dopamine dressing! She also treats us to a reading of one of my favourite poems from the book and, if you know my feelings on women supporting women, you’ll probably be able to guess which one it is!

Intrigued? Well you won’t be disappointed, but you’ll have to wait until tomorrow morning to discover the details of my conversation with Donna! Make sure you follow on your preferred podcast platform so you never miss an episode.
