One of Glasgow's most iconic landmarks, the original Barrowland Ballroom was opened in 1935. During the Second World War it was especially popular with American servicemen, who introduced the Jive and the Jitterbug to the city's dancers. The dance hall suffered a disastrous fire in 1958 but was rebuilt and re-opened on Christmas Eve 1960, with the distinctive neon sign above the door which remains its trademark.

Jess is a playwright, theatre-maker and writer based in Glasgow, Scotland. Since achieving an Honours degree in English Literature and Theatre Studies from the University of Glasgow, she has worked closely with many well-known institutions including Playwrights’ Studio Scotland, Soho Theatre and Assembly at the Edinburgh Fringe. She was recently longlisted for A Play, Pie and a Pint’s David McLennan Award for New Writing.

As a journalistic writer, she’s contributed to such publications as DIVA Magazine and ONECity London.

Sometimes, our own anxiety can stand in the way of us doing what we love. I know; on my journey to becoming a writer, I constantly wrestled with the voice within that says “you can’t”, writes Jess Brodie. Every time I sat down to write I’d hear it whisper in my ear.

As I progressed, I came to realise that the voice in my head is the voice of doubt and insecurity, not of truth. Collaborating with other creatives has really helped my mindset, as having people around me to remind me of this fact was helpful.

Last week, “Why Not Me?”, the memoirs of the late Andrew McDonald, launched at an event with his family and friends, who had crowdfunded the project and asked Tell Your Story to help.

Andrew was a dedicated public servant who, as the first chief executive of the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa), played a leading role in creating and implementing a new set of rules for regulating MP expenses. He played a major part in removing parliament’s self-policing role and introducing greater transparency.

After being diagnosed with both Parkinson’s disease and prostate cancer, Andrew engaged in activism work with many charities including Scope, serving as their chair between 2014 and 2019.

We are incredibly proud to have been involved in making this thoughtful and wonderfully written book a reality and helping to preserve Andrew’s legacy.
