NEW CASE : Shafilea Ahmed.
Shafilea was born on the 14th July 1986 in Bradford to her father Iftikhar and her mother Farzana, who were originally from Pakistan. When Shafilea was still young her family moved to Great Sankey in Warrington, Cheshire.
She was very popular, she and wanted to be a solicitor.
In 2003 during a trip to Pakistan, it is reported that Shafilea was being forced to marry, in order to stop this from happening she drank bleach, she was taken back home to Warrington were her parents kept her at home till Shafilea couldn’t swollow, they eventually took her to the hospital where doctors were extremely concerned about her, when they asked what had happened, her parents told them that during a power out Shafilea had drunk bleach by mistake.
On the 11th September 2003 after missing a week of school Shafilea’s teachers called the police, who went round to her house, her parents said she had gone missing. A huge search began, meanwhile the police looked into the family, they found out about Shafilea drinking bleach.
February 2004, Shafilea’s body was found in the River Kent in Sedgwick in the Lake District. Her parents were arrested but with no evidence and they were let go.
The case was left as unsolved until the 25th August 2010, there was a break in at the Ahmed’s home, it was arranged by Alesha Ahmed, Shafilea’s younger sister, her parents called the police and got their daughter arrested, during questioning she told the police that she had been in the room when her father and mother had killed Shafilea using a plastic bag to suffocate her. Her father then threatened his other children in order for them to not say anything to anyone.
On the 3rd August 2012 Iftikhar and Farzana Ahmed where sentenced to a minimum of 25 years in prison. During the trial it was shown that Shafilea’s parents didn’t like that she was become westernised. During sentencing the judge evened said that this was an unrealistic thought for them to have as she was living in this culture and environment.
