A lot of us have struggled with depression in our lives. I just thought it might be good to do a post listing the ways people have found really helpful to turn things around and bring the sparkle back into our lives. I try to do as much as I can but still have down days but I’m a lot happier than I used to be.

Here are my top tips. Please add any more below as could really help someone:

Dance and move - gets you out of your head and into your body

Gratitude - The book ‘The Magic’ by Rhonda Byrne - looking at the gratitude everyday, even of our worst situations, really helped turn my life around

Boundaries - look at your friendships and if any are abusive, even if only sometimes, step away from them. Life gets so much better from doing this

Walking meditations - I love the one Joe Dispenza does https://walkforthe.world

What inspires you and brings you joy? Make a list and try to do as much of them as you can

The ‘knowledge techniques’ that Prem Rawat teaches really helped me to appreciate the love, peace and happiness within as when you search for it on the outside you can often be disappointed https://www.wopg.org

Go clean with the help of 12 Steps or other support groups.
Stop all alcohol, drugs (including sugar and caffeine etc)
This is an obvious one but some people just can’t stop. A lot of people think life is depressing but if they go clean, even though the problems are still there, their happiness comes back. It can be hard to do on your own so 12 steps and other support groups are good for this.

Sleep - try to sleep well and go to bed early. I heard it’s best to go to bed at 10pm or before as our body is detoxing at certain times https://www.nirvananaturopathics.com/blog/traditional-chinese-organ-body-clock

Cleanse - doing cleanses or cutting out foods that aren’t good for you can really help. I love doing the juice cleanse retreats online with Julie Devine or Paris Knight

If you don’t enjoy your job, change it asap! I used to be a supply teacher for 10 years. I was depressed and it was giving me anxiety. My life got so much better as soon as I gave up teaching. Your job is a big part of your life so it’s important that it’s not depressing you

Set Goals: look at all areas of your life and write down your goals and take action steps towards them ie career, finances, home, spirituality, relationships, travel, courses, fun, health etc and then re-evaluate them regularly. Look at what is working and what is making you unhappy and needs to change and take steps to change any aspects that aren’t great.

Follow people like Tony Robbins or other coaches. They often give free courses to help inspire you

Talking Therapies (free on the NHS) or lots of low cost places about

Morning pages and journaling - write down all the things going on in your head. It helps to keep it clear

Spend time in green spaces and take off your socks and shoes and reconnect with nature

Acceptance - life isn’t perfect and a lot of unhappiness can be from thinking things should be another way

Declutter and tidy up - I am slowly getting better at this one and find the Marie Kondo method really good in the book ‘The Magic Of Tidying Up’

See friends - for many people we are now busier than ever and it’s hard to keep up with people. I try my best to put my social life before my work life as in Oz I always remember how they ‘work to live’ rather than ‘live to work’

Affirmations - sometimes I just thought ‘fake it til you make it’s and just said lots of affirmations even though inside the cynic wasn’t happy. I do find the more positive I am the more positivity comes into my life and the same goes for when I’m negative. So best to try and be positive as mush as we can

Be creative - although I’m rushing around doing a myriad of jobs with not much time left over I try to take time when I can to create new things. Decorations, sage sticks, photography, paintings, jewellery, greetings cards etc I love doing things with my hands and it makes me happier

Travel - see new places (especially sunny ones) I usually come back more inspired after this

Self care - try and get bodywork and healings whenever you can. (A lot of schools and colleges do low cost to)

Take action even when you feel depressed and cynical and it’s the last thing that you actually want to do
