An Effluent Society Part 1…As a family, our favourite swimming spot is Warfleet near Dartmouth, an area where we’ve recently discovered sewage is regularly discharged. With 75% of UK rivers posing a serious risk to human health, we wanted to find out what’s being done to combat this issue. seachange

Sealed with a Fish Part 2…Meet Marlin, a grey seal who was rescued back in 2001 as a pup. Unfortunately Marlin is completely blind and was found having swallowed a lot of fishing gear. This is a common issue for marine life, with more than 640,000 tonnes of nets, lines, pots and traps discarded every year (most by mistake). That’s the same weight as 55,000 double decker buses.seachange

The Godfather of Microplastics Part 1…We met with an absolute conservation legend whilst in Plymouth, none other than Professor Richard Thompson, director of the Marine Institute at the University of Plymouth. Referred to as the ‘godfather’ of microplastics after his groundbreaking 2004 paper, he received an OBE in 2018 for his services to marine science.seachange

Noss Marina Part 2…What happens to all the waste water from a wash down of your boat I hear you ask? Normally it goes back into the river/sea. But is that a bad thing? In a nutshell. Yes. Yes it is.
Poor water quality damages ecosystems & habitats and in turn reduces it effectiveness in reducing carbon. With English rivers labelled a ‘chemical cocktail’, we need to work hard to clean up our act.

And we’re off. Sailing from Dartmouth to Plymouth via Salcombe - or…ahem……not, as the case may be. She did well, the old girl, even reaching an absurd 6 knot...
