Career Summary

Since 2001 I have been working within magazine design gaining experience working within consumer, customer and B2B publishing. A recent role was working on a freelance basic as the deputy Art Editor for ‘Soaplife’ magazine at IPC Media within Time Warner - now Time Inc UK. With an average fortnightly circulation of 85k I design picture-led pages, amend templates and support the Art

Director. Throughout my design career I have worked with many consumer magazines including celebrity magazine ‘Star’ at the Express Group, produced initial design templates for BBC’s ‘Match of The Day’ with a weekly circulation of over 115k issues. Freelanced has also included BBC’s Good Homes, BBC's GirlTalk magazine, Future Publishings ‘DVD & Blu-Ray Review’ and 4 years at ‘Dive’ Magazine for Circle Publishing. I also freelanced for B2B titles at Jump PR, Zed Publishing and Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. I also worked for Wordwide - a boutique design agency working for Yorkshire Building Society and ColumbiaThreadneedle. After a successful first launch I continued to work with Wordwide where I regularly designed customer magazine pages for Subaru, Bank of Scotland, Headmasters and Wentworth Golf Club. I also worked as the art editor for the members magazine for the Royal Automobile Club based in Pall Mall SW1. There I would produced the whole magazine by attending client meetings, designing pages, commisioning photoshoots, working with picture budgets, and doing all in-house retouching before sending pages to print. With my vast experience of working across many magazines I am able to easily recognise weak area's of your publication and can adjust accordingly to help engage more with the reader. Other skills include:
Logo design,
Re-branding,
eShots,
Managing art budgets including the commisioning of illustrators, photographers and subbing staff,
Re-designs,
Setting-up magazine templates,
Managing picture budgets,
Running design teams and managing freelance staff,
Digital repro.

I haven't posted on here for a while as I have been working on a few non-design projects and alongside a few design briefs for which I will post soon. But I couldn't resist posting this very clever front cover just released by National Geographic. Obviously the picture says it all and just proves if the image is powerful enough there is never a need for a clever strapline.

Awareness, awareness, awareness. We can't care if we don't know, and there are still too many people that just don't know. Thank you National Geographic and National Geographic Magazine for shining the light on the issue of plastic pollution. Great cover to the June issue. Read their press release on our site:

I have managed to squeeze in a new logo over the Easter period for a new sports education company working exclusively alonside a local comprehensive school. The target audience was 16-18 year olds looking to start their career and further their education within the Nottinghamshire area. Simple bright colours and clean sport-related fonts seem to have done the trick. Best of luck You Can Do Sport

After working for Star magazine on and off for a number of years I am pleased not to be working there anymore. Trinity Mirror has a stronger hold on the market with this purchase and of course will mean we are being controlled by the media even more. Sad to read that some old colleagues will be losing their jobs but am sure with their skills will be able to move onto new exciting projects like I have done. A change is always good 🙂

After being so busy this year on many other non-design related projects I haven't had time to keep up to date with interesting design news until I found this story. It's well worth a read... Walls of water: Hokusai and the Great Wave of Camberwell

A London mural of Hokusai's Great Wave was nearly destroyed when a drug lab exploded next door, but there are many more on walls around the world.

Their coverage isn't that good as but the agency they employed for this advert for vodaphone has done a great job. Nice use of sound placed over moving typography to get a great message across. Really works for me. Nice and simple :-)

Print is certainly not dead but for some forms of media it's decided the only way is online. The first newspaper was published in the early 1600s. I wander how long it will take for most of them to go online? I am very sure there will be plenty more to follow and plenty that won't. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-35561145

The Independent and Independent on Sunday newspapers are to cease print editions in March, the owner says.

Just doing some research on 'old fashioned adverts' for a client and stumbled across this article in the the mail online from a couple of years ago. It's quite shocking but goes to show how far advertising has moved on in 50 years... Well worth a quick look!

Volkswagen, Drummond sweaters and Kellogg's all feature in the collection of men groping their wives, treading on them and blowing smoke in their faces.

So it's been a crazy year so far for J o n A u d i e H a r t D E S I G N. Usually January is very quiet but the workload hasn't stopped ever since the 4th Jan. I started with a 24-page magazine on an 18 hour project for a small publishers based in North-west London. Other projects have included bespoke work for Highfields School based in Newark-upon-trent, adverts for Puzzler Media based in Redhill Surrey and also have potential design work coming up very soon with Richard Watkinson Estate Agents based in Newark and Flywheel fitness based in Dubai. Oh and I had an office move in the middle of all this too. Good but busy times :-)

Some incredible photography captured here of abandoned buildings of the Eastern Bloc. Photographer Christain Richter has managed to capture the sadness so well within these fatigued buildings that held so much power, glamour and hope for the communist people of east Germany. Well worth a look! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-34575019?ocid=socialflow_twitter

Christian Richter spent his teens exploring abandoned buildings in what was then East Germany. Now, as an adult, he's still doing it and photographing their decaying interiors.

Some nice Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator effects used on a couple of covers of GradJobs magazine that I was Art Editing back in 2006. No budget for stock imagery so my handy design skills worked quite well and kept it nice and young. The magazine - closely supported by 'The Times' newspaper - was designed and distributed at The National Graduation Recruitment Exhibition 4 times a year. Good memories!

Hugely proud of my first job as 'acting' Art Editor working for DIVE magazine for Circle Publishing in September 2006. Amazing subject matter, incredible photography and such a fantastic group of people to work with. Hence the reason I stayed working there for 4 great years.
