There are 8 question types in the KS2 SATs Reading Comprehension.
Guidance for Category 2b - Retrieve and record information / Identify key details from fiction and non-fiction.

The use of external knowledge, or presumed knowledge is a common error. The answer is always in the text.
So, simple questions can involve basic retrieval methods.
- Why is the cat hungry?
Firstly, it is necessary to find where there is a mention of a hungry cat. In the case of easy questions, the answer can be right there. However, more complex retrieval can rely on the use of grammar.
The cat was hungry: it had been travelling without pause for many days.

There are 8 question types in the KS2 SATs Reading Comprehension.

Guidance for Category 2a - Give/Explain the meaning of words in context. It is very rare that such a question will be phrased:

Look at the first paragraph. What does ‘rapidly’ mean?

Instead the question will be phrased this way:

Look at the first paragraph. Find a word that has the same meaning as ‘quickly’.

When the correct answer is uncertain, a strategy is to find words that it could be and swap the new word or phrase into the sentence. Does the sentence still have the same meaning?
