6. Spelling the names of characters/texts/writers/elements/major figures in history incorrectly.
7. Not showing your working in Maths.
8. Not showing how you used your calculator.
9. Not showing the limits of error in measurements.

Trouble remembering quotations? Don't let this catch you out on your IB exams. Try this technique to help you learn them, based on recommendations provided in our 167 IB Secrets book.

1. Choose quotations which illustrate relevant aspects of theme, setting, character development, conflicts, etc., and which also illustrate characteristic features of the author's style of writing.

2. Write the quotations individually on notecards, preferably a different colour for each text.

3. Divide these notecards up and give some to your parents, siblings, or best friends. Whenever you see the people you gave some to have them read you the first half of a quotation and you finish it. Next time, have them give you fewer words as cues and you tell them the quotation.

Happy memorising!

IB exams are on their way and you're probably in full study mode. So, to help you out we're sharing some quick revision tips courtesy of our IB study skills author, Tim Williams. Here's a quick round-up of his tips, follow the link in bio for the full article and more helpful study advice to get you through your IB exams.

1. Make connections about the info you are trying to learn. Connect facts or extra info to things you already know well.
2. Divide the topic you are studying into half a dozen sections and study them over different weeks.
3. Repeated short tests are very effective - use past papers.
4. Study early rather than late.
5. Change the form of the info you are studying, don't just re-read it, turn it into something else (i.e. mind map, diagram, mnemonic, etc.)

Good luck with your exam revision!

As the saying goes, "many hands make light work". When it comes to studying for your IB exams, collaborating with friends can really help you get through material and reduce your stress. Here's what our study skills author, Tim Williams, recommends to make the most of your group study sessions.

1. Ask around and see who needs to work as hard as you do, or who is aiming for similar results, that way you'll be able to encourage each other along.

2. Make note cards on topic areas and share them with one another.

3. Summarise subject (examiners') reports.

4. Get past papers to look at and do 'outline' answers, compare work and share ideas.

5. Identify problems you both/all have and ask your teachers about them.

6. Write summary posters of units/topics on a big piece of paper. Pin them to your wall for your reference, take a photo of them and share with friends for theirs.

7. Test each other on the definitions in science syllabuses.

8. Write post-its to put around your house, why not make a set for a friend?

9. Learn two quotations per exam text per 80 minute study session.

10. Test each other on understanding the Assessment Criteria.

When your studying alone or with a group, don't just re-read your notes and textbooks - you have to do something to the information to remember it.

Our IB History author, Joe Gauci, is sharing his top tips for what makes a good IB History essay and we're starting with how to keep your essay focused. So, what do you need to do?

1. Make sure you spend the first few minutes of the exam planning your answer, you decide on what your line of argument will be - what will your answer to the question be? Do this instead of just thinking about what information you will include.

2. In your introduction, make it clear what your line of argument is going to be. So, if the question asks you to evaluate, for example, the causes of one 20th century war, instead of listing some of the factors you will be looking at, indicate briefly which causes were most important and why and whether one stands out as the most important.

3. Check that your first sentence (the 'key' sentence) of each paragaraph of your essay is making a statement that directly answers the question.

4. For each point that you make, provide an explanation of what light that point sheds on the question / why it is significant and also present evidence or a precise example to support it. So the drill is, 'Statement, Explanation, Example'.

With this in mind, head over to our homepage (link in bio) where you can find Joe's full article, which includes examples of essays that do the above successfully and those that don't. Seeing practical examples will help you figure out how you can incorporate the above advice into your own writing. Happy studying!

What's an OIL RIG Cat and what does it have to do with IB Chemistry? Fair questions.

AN OIL RIG CAT is a handy mnemonic device for helping to remember the principles of oxidation and reduction.

"ANode is the electrode where Oxidation Is Loss of electrons occurs, and Reduction Is Gain of electrons at the Cathode."

You'll find this helpful tip along with a more detailed explanation of oxidation and reduction in the article on our homepage (link in bio), all provided by our IB author Cameron Lumdsen from his IB Chemistry study guides.

In 1842, long before computers as we know them existed, Ada Lovelace began translation of an Italian article discussing mathematician and engineer Charles Babbage's newest concept, the Analytical Engine. In writing her translation, Ada also created a comprehensive set of notes in which she included a detailed description on how to calculate a sequence of Bernoulli numbers using the Analytical Engine. Though not tested, as the Engine was never built, her work is considered by many to represent the first ever computer programme.

Her contribution to the advancement of mathematics has been memorialised by the British Computer Society with their Lovelace Medal, and the Association for Women in Computing through their Ada Lovelace Award.

While working as a "computer" at the Harvard College Observatory calculating the brightness of stars, Henrietta, identified the relationship between the period of a star's brightness cycle and its absolute magnitude, making it possible to calculate their distance from Earth. Known as the period-luminosity relationship for Cepheids or "Leavitt's Law", Henrietta's discovery made it possible for scientists to measure distances on an inter-galactic scale forever changing our understanding of astronomy and the size of the universe.

Her contribution to physics was documented by physicist and author, George Johnson in his book Miss Leavitt's Stars, where he rightfully described her as "the woman who discovered how to measure the universe".
