BERKSHIRE PROVINCIAL GRAND CHAPTER ANNUAL CONVOCATION

It was a truly magnificent day at the annual convocation of the Berkshire Provincial Grand Chapter. Those present had the great pleasure of seeing E Comp Anthony C. Howlett-Bolton, OBE (also the Provincial Grand Master of Berkshire) installed as the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent by The Most Excellent Third Grand Principle Gareth Jones OBE. Members and guests were also honoured by the presence of E.Comp. Graham Redman, Deputy Grand Scribe Ezra, who read the Patent. There certainly were some very high-profile people there today!

After the morning's proceedings, everyone was treated to an excellent lunch in the Flavell Suite, The excellent caterers at Sindlesham Court did not disappoint! Upon return to the Chapter Room, the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent installed his officers in a most exemplary fashion.

It was a greatly enjoyable experience and a proud day for Freemasonry in Berkshire.

AN OUTSTANDING PASSING AND A JULY CHRISTMAS!

Last Tuesday Erlegh Lodge 9110 held their latest meeting at Sindlesham Court, which was the passing of Bro. Raphael Mennicken who had his initiation last month.

Bro. Raphael did very well answering the questions. He certainly seems very keen and should go far.

Everyone involved worked very hard to give Bro. Raphael and high-quality ceremony. The Senior Deacon did an excellent job and looked after Bro. Raphael extremely well. W. Bro. Bob Spooner delivered an excellent presentation of the long version of the working tools, done with feeling and expression. The Worship Master, W. Bro. Peter Oakley also did a masterful presentation of the Second Degree Tracing Board. Bro. Raphael is very fortunate to have joined a lodge with such competent and enthusiastic Brethren!

The July festive board is something quite special. It is a common complaint around December time that if a Mason visits a lot of lodges he will end up eating several Christmas dinners. To counter this, Erlegh Lodge has an old tradition. In December they have a Chinese meal and they have their Christmas dinner in July. So, members and guests were treated to a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings along with crackers, Christmas hats, and the odd bit of Christmas song! We even had some mince pies at the end as a bonus. It was an exceptionally good meal even by the very high standards of Sindlesham Court. Even the sprouts were really good!

There was a brother from Middlesex visiting the lodge and the lodge welcomed him by doing a few rounds of Middlesex fire! It is like ordinary Masonic fire but very very slow. When asked, the brother explained where the tradition came from. King George VI (a very active Freemason in his time) was the Provincial Grand Master of Middlesex when he was the Duke of York. When he died in 1952, the fire was slowed down as a mark of respect. It was initially only meant to be done for a year but it was never rescinded and it remains a tradition to this day!

A most interesting and friendly lodge. Well worth a visit.

Merry Christmas, Brethren!

Over 30 brethren friends and family of St Bartholomew and Hope Lodges joined together last Sunday for a joint Summer BBQ
Despite the very warm weather everybody enjoyed the Greek style BBQ prepared by George at the The Castle Pub ( Greek Table) Donnington
St Bartholomew have previously been dining at The Bacon Arms and now they have moved at The Castle at Donnington for their Festive Board.
They have enjoyed a choice of meals from the Greek style menu which has proved very popular with the brethren and visitors alike."

OUTSTANDING QUADRUPLE PASSING AT THE BERKSHIRE PROVINCIAL GRAND STEWARDS LODGE LAST TUESDAY!

Attendees witnessed an absolutely outstanding quadruple Passing ceremony by Berkshire Provincial Grand Steward Lodge 9381 last Tuesday, performed on behalf of Mitre Lodge 7732 and Ta**us Lodge 3981. Congratulations to the candidates, Bro. Gary Nigel Boyd, Bro Frankie Elliott Dowling, Bro. Earl Sinclair Dacosta Browne (all from Mitre) and Bro. Ashley James Mason from Ta**us. Also congratulations to Inner Guard W.Bro. Mickey Labana for flawlessly announcing all four names in full!

The ceremony was very well coordinated and flowed really well. Everyone knew exactly what they were doing and knew their lines. The members of Stewards' Lodge are known for their top quality ritual and they certainly lived up to their reputation. Two highlights were W.Bro. Miguel Medina-Romero's presentation of the long version of the Second Degree working tools delivered with expression and feeling and W.Bro/ Steve Graesser's presentation of the Second Degree tracing board. He delivered it like any of the best storytellers one might encounter. It will have made it all the more memorable for the four extremely lucky candidates.

Another lovely moment was when the Provincial Grand Master (himself a member of the lodge) presented a 50 year certificate to W.Bro Michael Wightman, a founder of the Berkshire Provincial Grand Stewards' Lodge. Congratulations to W.Bro. Michael!

The festive board was truly enjoyable. It was their annual white table festive board with many of the wives and partners of lodge members and guests present. The food was up to Sindlesham Court's usual excellent standard and the table stewards did a superb job making sure that everyone's glasses were topped up.

It was an excellent evening and we hope to return in November.

Thank you W.Bro. Gordon Johnson for providing the photo in the temple of the candidates and members.

Today we mark 79 years since the landings, remembering the service and sacrifice of all those involved in turning the tide in the Second World War.

Among those who fought on D-Day were many Freemasons, who played a vital role in the Allied victory.

Thank you to all who served.

The Provincial Demonstration Team had an excellent rehearsal tonight. They will be performing a demonstration the Second Degree Ceremony but will show how the various pieces of ritual can be divided among different Brethren, so there is not too much pressure on people to learn really long pieces. They are getting excited as the day approaches for them to perform it. That will be happening on Tuesday 27th June at the Berkshire Lodge of Enlightenment, meeting at Sindlesham Court! Please do come along if you can!
