UNTITLED CLASSIC NOLLYWOOD MOVIES ON YOUTUBE - The Good The Bad and The Ugly Side of it

For lovers of classic Nollywood films, an afternoon of nostalgia binge-watching can quickly become frustrating. A simple YouTube search for iconic titles like Glamour Girls or Intruder often yields disappointing results. Instead of finding the original movie titles, viewers are confronted with supposedly, strategically crafted SEO descriptions like, “This Omotola Jalade Ekeinde movie will make you cry” or “I beg every lady, home or abroad, must watch this movie.” Other vague descriptions like, “I never knew that the man I fell for was a rich man” and “This Oge Okoye movie won several awards” add to the confusion. These generic, clickbait-style tags diminish the legacy of these films and make it difficult for viewers to find what they’re looking for, especially those who grew up with these classics and seek to relive them.......
.......In preserving these titles, we’re honouring Nollywood’s rich history and ensuring that these movies continue to hold a meaningful place in the hearts of their audiences.

INTRODUCING THE KUJUS - Arguably one of the best-produced family comedy dramas in Nollywood

Introducing the Kudus is a 2020 family comedy-drama starring Bisola Aiyeola, Timini Egbuson, Ronke Odusanya, Femi Jacobs, and Kunle Remi. Directed by Biodun Stephens, known for hits like Breaded Life and Progressive Tailors Club, the film follows the lives of five siblings who, through deception and persuasion, are brought back home to mark the five-year remembrance of their mother. Mausi (Aiyeola) and her younger brother, Maugbe (Egbuson), devise a plan to reunite with their siblings: Mautin (Jacobs), Mauyan (Remi), and Maupe (Odusanya). However, the reunion does not go as planned, as old grievances resurface, challenging their attempt to reconcile.
This feature-length film benefits from a tightly crafted script by Mannie Oisemaye, Donald Tombia, and Stephens herself. The story balances humour and heartfelt drama, creating a relatable and compelling narrative that resonates with audiences. The film also offers a subtle nod to the town of Badagry in Lagos, Nigeria, through the siblings’ names and weaving in elements of Badagry’s rich history and cultural sites.
The house chosen as the Kujus' family home is also a perfect setting that subtly reinforces the story’s themes. The architecture and interior convey the disciplined and Christian upbringing that shaped the siblings in their formative years. It stands as a character in its own right, echoing the values and the memories that bind the family, even through years of separation.
Bimbo Ademoye brings depth as Ebi, Maupe’s grown-up daughter, while child actors Ayomide and Tope Ogunleye add to the film’s family charm. Chris Iheruwa and Fola Agunbiade also add flavour to their feature roles as family friends, Otunba and Chuks.
Introducing the Kudus is a well-produced, thoughtfully crafted family comedy-drama that celebrates Nigerian culture and storytelling. It is arguably one of the best-produced family comedy dramas in Nollywood, setting a high standard for future productions in the genre.

TYLER PERRY BREAKS FROM TRADITION WITH A NEW BOLD AND PROFANITY LACED DRAMA, BEAUTY IN BLACK ON NETFLIX

Just when it seemed like Tyler Perry had stepped up his game with Mea Culpa and Divorce in Black after his previous streaming flicks, A Fall from Grace and Jazzman Blues, which didn’t exactly get rave reviews, it looks like the One Man Show filmmaker might be slipping again with his new drama series, Beauty In Black now streaming Netflix

Perry's trying something different, moving away from his usual heartfelt, inspirational and social issue vibe. This 8-part series explores interwoven stories from two characters: Kimmey (Taylor Polidore Williams), a stripper trying to escape her rough life but constantly hitting roadblocks, and Mallory (Chrystle Stewart), a rich, rude woman helping her irresponsible, drug-addicted husband, Roy (Julian Horton), run a family cosmetic empire that’s facing a major lawsuit that could take them down.

Now, while Kimmey and Mallory's stories are twisty enough to keep you hooked, the writing isn't the strongest, and brace yourself—the excessive profanity, especially the F-words, was just over the top. It felt like Perry missed the mark with this one. The casting and acting were okay, but a better script could’ve elevated the performances.

Williams and Stewart did shine, though—Williams made you feel for Kimmey, really rooting for her to break free, while Stewart made you genuinely dislike the rude Mallory who with her tiny 5’4” frame can still look a masculine 6-footer man bold in the face even after …. and say “you’re fired

All in all, the twisty plot and decent acting come together to deliver a somewhat intriguing series that might keep you waiting for Spring 2025. And you just might be left asking Tyler Perry, “Bro, how you gonna do me like that?”

SCREENNOLLY THROWBACK - WIVES ON STRIKE

Wives On Strike is a comedy satire produced and directed by Omoni Oboli , featuring a brilliant cast that includes herself, Uche Jombo, Ufoma McDermott, Kenneth Okonkwo, Julius Agwu, and Chioma Chukwuka. The well-crafted narrative hilariously unfolds the story of a group of women who embark on an unconventional strike to advocate for the abolition of child marriage. Released in 2016, the film garnered excellent reviews for its seamless approach to addressing a sensitive social issue through comedy.

Building on the success, a year later, a sequel titled Wives On Strike: The Revolution was released, featuring the return of the top cast alongside new additions like Toyin Abraham and Sola Sobowale.

Now, the highly anticipated second sequel, Wives On Strike: THE UPRISING, starring the original cast with the addition of Nollywood veteran Hilda Dokubo and skit comedian Kie Kie, has been released in Nigerian cinemas in October 2024. And a UK Screening is also slated for early November at Odeon, Vue and Cineworld Cinemas

Born Atobiloye Kelvin Kayode, Kevin Power has carved a remarkable path from working as Kizz Daniel's bodyguard to becoming a Nollywood sensation.

His inspiring journey mirrors the iconic rise of Mr T, who similarly transitioned from being a celebrity bodyguard to a global star in The A-Team and Rocky III. Both men seized the right opportunities, turning them into life-altering successes.

Isoken is a 2017 romantic comedy starring Dakore Akande Marc Rhys, and Joseph Benjamin. Written and directed by Jadesola osiberu the film follows the story of Isoken (Akande), a 34-year-old single woman facing mounting pressure from her family—particularly her mother, played by Tina Mba to get married. Isoken is introduced to Osaze (Benjamin), a successful young man, but she also finds herself drawn to Kevin (Rhys), a charming white man. This budding attraction creates complications, as his background poses a challenge within her traditional family.

Isoken was critically acclaimed, receiving seven African Magic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCA) nominations and winning three, including Best Director, Best West African Film, and Best Supporting Actress. At the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), it also earned seven nominations, winning Best Actress, Best Nigerian Film, and Achievement in Costume Design

Also starring are Funke Akindele, Damilola Adegbite, Patrick Doyle and Lydia Forson, who won AMVCA’s Best Supporting Actress

A*o Idoti is a 2009 classic Yoruba movie starring Alh. Taiwo (Ogogo) Hassan, Bisi Komolafe (RIP), Deola Taiwo and Dele Odule

A richly woven family drama steeped in Yoruba cultural values and set against the backdrop of deep Islamic principles, the film tells the story of Tunde Badmus (Ogogo), a devoted husband and father whose moral convictions are tested when his daughter’s close friend, Ibukun (Komolafe), attempts to lure him into an illicit affair. Ibukun, a troubled young woman who grew up with little parental guidance, manipulates older men as a way to fill the emotional void in her life.

Written and produced by Taiwo Ogogo Hassan and directed by Abbey Lanre, the film delivers a compelling narrative that emphasises the moral responsibilities within a family. The brilliant cast also includes Funbi Oduro, Sunny Alli and Toyin Afolayan (Lola Idije).

Back to Black - Discovering Amy Winehouse on Netflix

I hadn't paid much attention to Amy Winehouse before, largely because her remarkable music career was often overshadowed by her struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction. Despite her numerous successes—five Grammy wins, chart-topping hits, best-selling albums, and sold-out shows—her personal battles seemed to eclipse her achievements for me. As a DJ and journalist focused on contemporary African music, I was more interested in genres connected to my work, and her Camden punkish image didn't resonate with me.
However, discovering her cover of Grover Washington’s "Mister Magic" opened my eyes to the profound soul and jazz influences in her music. I realised how unfairly I had judged her and how much I had missed out on appreciating a genuine musical genius.
Watching Back to Black on Netflix gave me a deeper understanding of Amy Winehouse. The film, written by Matt Greenhalgh and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, explores her life in detail, highlighting her Jewish upbringing and the influence of her father's and grandmother’s love for soul jazz. Starring Marisa Abela, with Eddie Marsan, Leslie Manville, and Jack O’Connell as Blake Fielder-Civil, the biopic is aptly named after her second album, which won her five Grammys in 2008.
If you, like me, have overlooked Amy Winehouse's music, Back to Black on Netflix is a must-watch.
