You’ve probably heard this word but aren't sure what it means, let alone how it relates to online communities.

An NFT (non-fungible token) is best understood when broken down into simple terms. Non-fungible means that the item is one of a kind and not interchangeable. NFTs are digital items, for now, art, music, and photography are the most popular. The majority of NFTs are part of the Ethereum blockchain; Ethereum is a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin.

Currently, the most common use of this technology is to sell one-of-a-kind digital art. Many see NFTs as a new acquisition method for art collectors, except it’s not a painting from the 1700s. It’s a gif, a meme, or an illustration - very 2022.

There are Pudgy Penguins and the Bored Ape Yacht Club, niche online communities interacting on Discord, Twitter, and Reddit, and sharing an interest in a specific NFT type or artist.

We’re starting to see brands launch their own NFTs, like Marvel or Mcdonalds' with the ‘Digital McRib’. 2022 may see an uptake in brand campaigns using NFTs. We will have to wait and see how more mainstream communities react.
