A short reminder from Shaykh Rizwan Hussain Al-Azhari

Mental health stigma costs humanity hundreds of thousands of lives every year. The WHO estimates that close to 800 000 people die due to su***de every year and that for every su***de there are many more people who attempt su***de.
The Muslim Diary
The number one illness which incapacitates people is not a physical one, but a mental one (depression) and in spite of this, many people, including Muslims still donโt believe that depression is a real illness and not a result of low faith.
I am not saying that mental health stigma affects only Muslims, no, this is a widely spread phenomenon, making people who are struggling with a mental health disorder, to suffer twice: 1- they struggle with the symptoms of that disorder and 2- they have to endure the stigma against it, making it hard for them to speak with their families and friends and to request or access help, fearing they might be associated with mental health clinics or professionals.
This is particularly hard for Muslims because stigma attacks their level of faith. Many times they are told: โyou need to pray moreโ; โyou donโt trust Allahโ; โthere are others who have it worse than you, so why are you complaining?โ But the truth is there are many contributing factors for depression and other mental health issues, which include genetics, biochemical imbalances, and environmental influences.
If you know somebody with a mental disorder please remember that he/she is struggling with an illness and not a fault in his character or religion and show compassion.
Get informed before judging.
Unsolicited Advice. Unwanted comments motherโs receive the most? Comment below โฌ๏ธ
Being a mother doesnโt mean you canโt work. Doesnโt mean you have to be confined to the house. Being a wife doesnโt mean you have to take on the world. Give your self a break. Islam has given BOTH men and women specific duties & responsibilities. Islam also promotes equality.
A lot of sisters feel like they donโt have a choice, yet our religion teaches us moderation. Be moderate in situations that become overwhelming.

A womanโs existence should never revolve around a man. โข My value as a woman is not measured by the size of my waist, or the number of men who like me. My worth as a human being is measured on a higher scale: a scale of righteousness & piety. And my purpose in life- despite what fashion magazines say- is something more sublime than just looking good for men.

Headlines and posts roar across media on a daily basis, misrepresenting Islam, especially Hijabis. This results in many misconceptions on the part of non-Muslim viewers/readers. Therefore, words like โoppressed,โ โtrapped,โ โabused,โ โforcedโ may appear common. How do we, as Hijabis, replace those words with โfree,โ โconfident,โ โintelligentโ and โeducated?โ The sad truth is that we cannot force people to stop thinking the way they do, but we can definitely give them a new perception into what itโs like being a Hijabi. โฃ
โฃ
1. Take Advantage of Social Media: News on social media spreads like a lightning faster than other news sources including Radio, TV and Newspapers. Take advantage of this fact and spread news when and where possible, on your social media pages. We have Hijabi activists like Muslim Girlโs , for example, who live-streamed her conflict and arrest on American Airlines at Newark Airport. โฃ
โฃ
2. Know Your Rights: This includes both Islamic and civil rights of the country in which you live. Women in Islam have the right to choose who they wish to marry, the right to divorce, the right to keep their maiden names after marriage, the right to educate themselves, the right to run their own businesses! If a hijabi is living in a country, know your civil rights for example, in the USA, there is freedom of religion and freedom of speech. We even have and sitting in Congress! โฃ
โฃ
3. Answer Questions: How do we answer questions about Islam? First of all, be grateful that someone is asking. It means they are willing to understand. Secondly, it is important to take into consideration how old the person is and in what physical and mental state this person is. For example, you would not answer a child the same way as you would answer a teen or an adult. You would not answer a person who is healthy compared to a person who is either drunk or mentally unstable. Thirdly, no matter what, always take in a deep breath, think before you speak, answer in a calm manner and tone (even if the person asking the questions may be screaming). Represent Islam as the Prophet ๏ทบ has exemplified through his actions.
