It is undeniable that the recent HBO TV show “The Last of Us” (based on the hugely successful video game of the same name) has pushed diseases into minds of those that normally would not think about it.

Tales about a fungus that can take control of a host, change its behaviour and ultimately drive it to violent fury and murder do make for good entertainment, but are these tales just that; or are they in fact an actual threat?

Yesterday we shared information on the outsourcing of clinical trials to Africa but this isn’t the first time we’ve shared information about this on the site!

Back in April 2021, we shared:
Profit Over Consent? The Outsourcing of Clinical Trials.

This article takes a into the outsourcing of clinical trials to low-and-middle income countries (LMICs) in order to reduce expenditure on trials.

This, however, leaves vulnerable populations open to exploitation, as proved when 430 young women were recruited to test a breast cancer drug called Letrozole which is known to be fetotoxic (damages developing foetuses) and told they were testing a new fertility drug.

Vaccine hesitancy amongst the world’s most at-risk communities often stems from a legacy of colonialism and exploitation.

For many in the world’s poorest regions, the only way to access medicine is through taking part in clinical trials.

To truly restore trust it is essential for pharmaceuticals companies to engage with communities in a truly ethical way.

In 2011 the CIA had used a fake Hepatitis B vaccination campaign to obtain DNA samples that might help locate Bin Laden.

Following this revelation, international health centres delivering vaccines in Afghanistan and Pakistan were shut down by the Taliban and nine health workers delivering door-to-door polio vaccines in Pakistan were killed with another nine being murdered in Nigeria in 2013 amid suspicion of association with international intelligence.

Discover
Your world &
Your
Voice

We’re here to offer an intersectional, immersive platform to enable the discovery of the world around you and to amplify the voices of those that would go unheard.

For too long there has been a top-down approach to global health with decision makers writing policy before connecting to the people it affects.

Before we legislate. We must communicate.

Debt got a re-brand

At this time of year where cash is constrained and expenses are high, loans or BNPL (Buy Now Pay Later) options may seem attractive, alleviating the immediate worry of Christmas whilst staving off the debt for another day.

Unfortunately, these are still debts, albeit wrapped up in trendy marketing, with BNPL companies such as Klarna now boasting 14M consumers across the UK alone (Klarna, 2021).

Singapore repealed Section 377A of its penal code, which criminalised s*x between two men, just over a month ago on 21 August 2022.

The law was introduced during British colonial rule, and after years of campaigning from activist groups its repeal is a welcome step forward for s*xual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in this conservative nation.

Meet the writers: Naabil Khan (.n.khan)

"Hi, I’m Naabil. I am a first year medical student and I am currently studying at the University of Exeter. My passion lies with global health as I believe that healthcare should be accessible for all-clinically and academically.

I advocate for health issues around the world such as vaccine accessibility, abortion rights and gender/race equality within the healthcare system. I believe that we must be the change we want to see in the world. I hope to work with MSF in the future and apply my medical knowledge to make a difference internationally."

Precision medicine is a growing field of personalised healthcare which takes an individual’s lifestyle, environment and genes into account to predict what treatment/prevention strategies are most appropriate.

Research into precision medicine has been limited in ancestral diversity due to the Eurocentric focus adopted by researchers for centuries.

This has meant that non-European populations have been largely omitted from genetic research.

We are exposed to so much information in the world, where every single issue can become a huge story, a hash tag, a new banner that you have to change your profile picture to help feel useful.

With this reasoning, how do we allocate awareness towards so many major issues in the world?

How do you decide which crisis is the most important?

Is the stripping of human rights in America as damming and more important than the antibiotic crisis?

The human mind is one of complex thoughts, synapses that fire at incredible speeds to tell your body to function in a synchronised rhythm.

We know tremendous information about the cosmos, the world we live in and even the infinitesimally small organisms that can bring the world to a halt. The brain knows how to perform high level molecular synthesis, how to create beautiful melodies, and the entire history of the universe, but can it know too much?

The NHS Act, brought before parliament in 1946, was created as part of a social welfare policy under Clement Atlee's Labour government which aimed to provide universal and free benefits to all those in need.

At present we are living in a two-tier system of the haves and have-nots, in which people that can afford to go private do so to avoid NHS dentistry’s long wait times and lack of appointments.

Dentistry is in crisis.

Many people can’t access a dentist through the NHS due to limited spaces and long waiting lists.

This leaves only private options which are often unaffordable for working class people. Because of this, 38% of individuals polled by said they're less likely to visit a dentist despite clinical guidance.

Alternatively, people that do choose to access care may have to take out treatment loans, pay monthly or explore other payment methods, further driving the wedge between the haves and have nots.

“Access to NHS dentistry has been one of the most significant issues people have raised with us in the last two years.

There is now a deepening crisis in dental care, leaving people struggling to get treatment or regular check-ups on the NHS.”
