OK – crunch time! A missive from editor Dorothy Max Prior:

Total Theatre Magazine is currently unfunded. For a number of years there has been nothing other than the occasional small project fund for a specific activity.

There are two main issues: whether TT can continue to operate as a contemporary venture, and if so, how that can happen; and how to safeguard the work done in creating the digitised print archive.

Thoughts and suggestions welcome!

In the meantime, there's a Support Total Theatre button on the home page of the main website for financial contributions. Anything you could give would help greatly with the ongoing costs.

OK – crunch time! A missive from editor Dorothy Max Prior

Total Theatre Magazine is currently unfunded. For a number of years there has been nothing other than the occasional small project fund for a specific activity.

Over the past few years, I have not only worked unpaid much of the time, but have sometimes contributed my own money to keep the main website and print archive website afloat. This can't continue, so decisions will have to be made. The immediate decision is that once current articles in progress are posted, I will need to put TT on hold for a few months whilst funding is sought/secured.

There are two main issues: whether TT can continue to operate as a contemporary venture, and if so, how that can happen; and how to safeguard the work done in creating the digitised print archive. Thoughts and suggestions welcome!

Funding: I'm currently putting together a National Lottery Heritage Fund bid to save the print archive (25 years of TT in print digitised, with the kind support of National Lottery, but now endangered). Other funding possibilities? We have benefited from ACE funding in the past but don't really fit their current criteria.

In the meantime, there's a Support Total Theatre button on the home page of the main website for financial contributions. Anything you could give would help greatly with the ongoing costs.

For over 30 years, Total Theatre Magazine has celebrated and supported physical and visual theatre and performance, and given space and voice to artists working in less well documented performance genres such as physical/visual theatre, outdoor arts, circus, puppetry, site-responsive performance, an...

Together We Are Giant

Yew trees, giants, wassailing, and witches’ lore. The Inside Out Festival 2025 stretches across Dorset and beyond, and digs deep into the county’s folklore and landscape to bring great works of outdoor arts to life. Dorothy Max Prior reports

The Burns Projects has closed, but there's still time to catch Victoria Melody and Johnny McKnight! But really, hurry... Just two days left of this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe and they'll both sell out, I'm sure!

A tale of love and luck told with dolls and toy vehicles, Ulysses for children featuring pop-up books and paper cuts, and a deconstructed King Lear replete with puppets and projections. Total Theatre Recommends:
Johnny McKnight
She's Behind You
Traverse
9.15pm

She's behind you! No, really she is – entering from the back of the auditorium in a blue gingham dress, fright-wig and a 'hideous yet age-appropriate leisure shoe' – comfy, but red and sparkly, of course. This is Dorothy Blawna-Gale alter-ego of Johnny McKnight aka Widow McTwanky – Scotland’s most famous pantomime dame.

A thrilling hour's worth of caustic humour, sizzling storytelling, song, dance, and audience participation was to be expected – but there's also a good dose of pantomime history, and a poignant coming out story, documenting Johnny's personal journey and Scottish panto's full-blown gay kiss. This is proper edu-tainment. Oh yes it is!
