SINK magazine's fifth issue, Rest, is now open for pre-orders!

Rest is SINK Magazine's 5th print issue, featuring 35 artists and writers responding to the theme of Rest. we have poems about kebab men and Netflix, stories about insomnia and living abroad, essays about 'little treat' culture and a monastic lifestyle, paintings, photographs and comic strips - there is truly something for everyone. and all of these amazing pieces come from incredibly talented creatives from the North of England.

and this issue is a little different from our other ones. in the past, we have donated 50% of profits from each issue to charity. this time, we're donating 100% of profits from sales of this issue and every other item in our store to Palestinian aid charities in support of Palestinian liberation. please help us to spread the word so that we can raise as much money as possible for the cause!

as you will see, there are various options for SINK buyers. you can get a PDF for just £3 or a physical copy for £7. you can also choose the 'support us' option at £10 to pay a little extra, or you can choose the 'pay it forward' option at £12, which pays for somebody in financial hardship or a local library to get a copy of the issue for free.

Join us at 18.00 GMT Sunday 25th February for an hour of reclaiming space with the wild. Through a series of genre-crossing creative prompts, meet our SINK community through getting down into the entagled roots of language and art itself.

The SINK Time series ignites artistic inspiration and embraces our creative community. Whether you have submitted to SINK before or are just happy to dip your docs into the rainy puddles of Northern creativity, these workshops are available to all!

This workshop is free to attend, but donations to Medical Aid Palestine are strongly encouraged.

today's inspiration is the Lebanese artist Adra Kandil, who works with collages, photography, typology and digital montage. she brings together fantasy, dreams, politics and culturally/socially relevant stories, using social media as her canvas.

"Nostalgia drives into our dreaming. Nostalgia is romantic, delicate yet loud. Like everything else, we take on light and color from outside ourselves and blend into one shade, together, as one. You're the sky, not a cloud. I'm the cloud. I gather and dissipate, but you are always here. Leave a message for me if you can. Watch the lilac blossom. Listen to the scratches of the vinyl and then the music. Then dance on and remember. Remember every moment, every memory, every photograph, just remember."

Our inspiration artist of the day is Judy Chicago, visionary feminist artist, art educator and activist. Her career spans over six decades and is distinguished by an engagement with overlooked women's histories and underprivileged mediums like needlework and pottery.

As an independent magazine, we stand unequivocally with Palestine and with Palestinians. Their courage, creativity, resistance and refusal to stay silent in the face of horrific genocidal violence by Israeli troops and settlers should underline our own imperative to speak up against settler colonialism.

Since October alone, more than 18,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza by Israel, often in bombardments which targeted schools, homes, mosques and hospitals. Entire bloodlines have been wiped out. Half of Gaza's population is starving, with nine out of 10 people unable to eat every day. Palestinian captives have been abducted, tortured, starved, and in some cases summarily executed by Israeli Occupation Forces. Meanwhile, Israel's Western allies, and even 'progressive' political movements such as the UK Labour Party, refuse to insist on a ceasefire that would suspend the suffering of Gaza's population of 2 million people.

For the foreseeable future, we will be donating 100% of profits from both in-person and online sales to charities supporting the cause of Palestinian liberation. Our store discount code, 'FREEPALESTINE', will give you 10% off your purchase, making it the perfect Christmas gift. In addition, if you send us proof of donation to any charity supporting Palestine, we will send you a bundle of all four PDF copies of our previous issues. No contribution is too small.

SINK will also continue to insist not only on a ceasefire in the current conflict, but an end to the ongoing settler colonial violence perpetrated continuously against Palestinians by the state of Israel since 1948.

Tomorrow, for the National Day of Action for Palestine, we encourage you to donate what you can to the charities below, write to those who are sponsoring this genocide to demand a ceasefire now, and read up on the long history of the world’s forever war against Palestine.

Today, nowhere in Gaza is safe. Tomorrow, let all of Palestine be free.

some more issue 5 inspiration for you today in the form of quotes and artwork on the theme of rest!!

Firelei Báez is a New York-based artist who combines diasporic histories, fantasy, mythology and ritual. She uses portraiture to build a connection between artist, spectator and subject, looking at how identity is moulded by shared histories in the form of found materials such as pages from travelogues, scientific manuals, biographies and other miscellaneous documentary items.

Njideka Akunyili Crosby is a Nigerian-born artist known for her intricately layered compositions which depict aspects of diasporic identity. She sees her work as autobiography, brought together by collage, photo transfer, acrylic paint, charcoal, fabric and coloured pencil.

Faith Ringgold is a painter, mixed media sculptor, performance artist and intersectional artist. In her narrative quilts, a medium she devised to escape the association of painting with the Western and European tradition. The quilts combine handwritten text with images, paying tribute to storytelling and family histories.

you've probably already seen that our visuals are heavily inspired by Nancy Spero for this issue so today we want to share some quotes from her for issue five inspiration 🖤

as a prolific artist and activist, Spero's work spanned five decades and focused on gender, war, cycles of life and death and bodies. inspired by Hélène Cixous and Simone de Beauvoir, she worked across various media, incorporating oral testimonies, cultural mythology, literary intertexts, prehistorical influences and explorations of contemporary political events.
