“They literally came out of nowhere,” is a refrain we’ve heard over and over, especially recently. But does anyone really come out of nowhere? By necessity, someone has to start listening first and send the music to their friends, or put it on in the car with their family. All these years and TikTok accounts later, I think the best way to discover music is still word of mouth. Especially as ticket prices climb and label marketing departments zero their resources in on just a few artists or songs, it’s more important to listen beyond the charts than ever…⁣

Don’t have time to scour for debut singles and self-released albums? We got you. Presenting: Pilot Magazine’s Radar.⁣

“When I reflect on my current situation, I think I have it all. An endlessly supportive partner, a network of friends who would go to war for me and a f**k-off massive 4k TV. Yet, I’ve been craving something that can’t be fulfilled by any of this. Nightlife.”⁣

Learning HTML and CCS, you’ll leave with a handmade website that you can show your crush, best friend, fav pop star, pet, or what/whoever is beloved in your life. Drinks will be available for purchase at the bar throughout the night, as will Maya’s own FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT book. Bring your computer! In person only.⁣

Pilot couldn’t be more excited to welcome NYC-based artist, writer, and internet princess Maya Man to host our next workshop. Maya is an artist focused on contemporary identity culture on the internet. Her websites, generative series, and installations examine dominant narratives around femininity, authenticity, and the performance of self online. She is the creator of the browser extension Glance Back and the Art Blocks curated collection FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT. “Within the tapestry of our existence, the interplay between faith and the real world often weaves a complex narrative that transcends the boundaries of our beliefs. It is here within the intersection of Catholic ideology that artist Jan Diaz has been able to encapsulate the profound threads of faith and religion through his sculpture. Diaz emerges as a captivating artist whose creative journey unfolds as an exploration into the intricacy of ritual, materialism, and the nuances of iconography found within biblical scripture.”⁣

“What interests me the most, maybe because it’s something that I struggle with a lot, is when there’s forced compartmentalising of thoughts or feelings into something that’s good or bad, rather than just it being what it is. I’ve really struggled with that a long time. But then in my music, I am able to kind of get to the core of it, where a lot of it seems to be about the grey area, you know…⁣

… Whether it’s the silver lining to a cloud or the pain of saying goodbye, you can still think on things fondly, even if they may have been, or might still be distinctly painful… There’s joy too.” - Vegyn () for ⁣

“Some things are just fun, some things are just free and silly, and other things are overtly sad. With this project, I was trying to kind of explore that grey area and challenge this desire to always live in a simple world when things are so, so complicated”.⁣

“For the un-inducted amongst us, UK based rock band Nothing But Thieves are the pinnacle of rock today. Yes I said it, SUE ME. Using this genre as a foundation, they’ve built a playground of musical experimentation over the top, with their fourth album Dead Club City chiming in as the latest addition to the record cabinet.”⁣

“Social media, as we know it, is dying. Twitter feels like a dumpfire world of cynicism and discourse politics, TikTok shop makes me feel weird, and Instagram pushes me vaguely ED-related recipes of Christian meme content. It all feels bleak, and to make it worse, all the platforms are slowly morphing into each other. The strongholds in the app world, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and more are cannibalising each other, taking distinct aspects of the other and half-heartedly adopting it.⁣

…⁣

PI.FYI speaks to the golden age of blogging. Back when Tumblr was just a place to reblog pretty pictures, RookieMag was religiously read because of the honest love their writers had for what they wrote about, and the whole internet itself felt like more of a mood board instead of a store. The interface of PI.FYI is almost garish, a technicolour world of blinding blue, bright red, and yellow stars. The site feels like the manifestation of the comic sans font, in a good way.”⁣
