🍊SINGLE REVIEW🍊
‘Orange Mood’ -

The new single ‘Orange Mood’ from Eva Penney is the purest bedroom pop I’ve heard in a long time. A song that could happily sit in a coming of age soundtrack with its beautifully melancholic innocence. The song swells which such gentleness, my heart flutters each time.

The introduction of trumpet into this track is just soft enough to add some gentle sonic complexity. I absolutely love her unique branding of collages each piece of artwork just as special as the last. Eva Penney is one to watch, I hope to see her burst out onto the bedroom pop scene soon.

NEW INTERVIEW 💿💿

🚨 Windshake’s Anthemic Second Album ‘Klipso Crewso & The Brass Bandits’ 🚨

I spoke to Killian and Sam, from Windshake, Bristol based psych rock 6-piece, to discuss their second album ‘Klipso Crewso & The Brass Bandits’.

The charm of Windshake is their sound. Though when asked to describe it, a flood of panic swept both their faces. Sam talks about this new album describing the tracks as “anthemic tribal chants” and says that while writing and recording he was picturing himself “running through the desert”. Killian on the other hand speaks of envisioning a “futuristic decaying city”. I think it’s this mix of influences grounded in a strong love for 70s music that gives Windshake their unique sound.

ALBUM REVIEW: 💙🌟 For those of you who grew up with an upright piano in their childhood home this album feels like returning to that seat at the piano. Both comforting and painful – this album explores real depth.

After first hearing snippets of the album’s most successful single ‘Could You Help Me’ I was hooked on the stabby piano. Lucy Rose has, for a long time, beautifully melted folk with produced electronic elements. She does it with such skill that it never feels forced.

The track titled ‘Interlude II’ brings me right back to that childhood home with recordings of Lucy’s son figuring out his speech. This album explores her struggles with excruciating back pain after giving birth to her son.

Drawing on such specificity Lucy tells a common truth of people in pain the lyric “Could you fit me in your busy day?” feels deeply relatable in many nuances of life.
This is such a beautiful complete album and it’s great to have Lucy return after a 4 year hiatus. ✨

FEATURE: Green Man Rising 2024 🌿💜

Following on from last year a Warm Sounds favourite winning the Green Man Rising competition we’re excited to see what new talent arises this year.

This year’s finalists are: ladylike, Mari Mathias, Nature Kids, The Orchestra (For Now) and TTSSFU. Here’s what you need to know about them.
band

Brighton based ladylike are a tasty slice of muddy indie psych. Their debut single and only release ‘Southbound’ hit streaming services last November. ladylike find themselves in the growing space I like to call folk sleaze (the 20s softer take on indie sleaze).

Creating depth mixing traditional and modern elements Mari Mathias sings in her native tongue Welsh, her debut album ‘Annwn’ released in March 2022. Mari’s music grounds you in a spiritual calmness while maintaining an uplifting nature you often find in traditional folk.

Life slows down with Nature Kids, an indie band in it’s truest form. The Leeds based 5 piece first single ‘Circle’ was released in 2022. Lofi-esque in it’s pace Nature Kids lull you into a calm reflective state.

Yet to release any music The Orchestra (For Now) are a band you need to experience live. From the one video I could find online they are a fun taste of alt folk playing on math rock elements in their instrumentation.

TTSSFU is the solo project of Manchester based Tasmin Nicole. The heavily 90s influenced shoe gaze mixed with modern lofi, features layered guitars and muddy vocals. Think Clario meets Lana Del Ray.

Tickets are now sold out for the live show where the winner will be chosen. Tomorrow night (Thursday 13th June) at in Cardiff.

REVIEW: 2024! 👽🪴

Bristol’s inner city festival that passionately champions local artists, a festival that is out of this world - Outertown! Despite being a young festival, only in its third 3 year, Outertown is growing and no one can at stop it. This year adding two extra venues - Trinity and Stag and Hounds this really is a whole old market affair.

Eve Appleton Band
Opening the festival this year was the lovely, Eve Appleton Band. The folky blues group opened Green Man festival last year, after winning the festival’s rising talent competition. Their groovy blues met with thoughtful lyrical folk was the perfect way to start of the festival.

Hector Who Lived
I’ve heard lots of good things about Hector Who Lived and was happy to find my expectations were met. From fronting a previous project, Try Me, we’re brought the same fun energy is this new project - and a jazzier indie slice.

My First Time
My favourite upcoming Bristol band My First Time played to a packed crowd at the Stag and Hounds. Commanding the room with the p***y indie sound you can’t help but bop along.

Outertown has earned its place on my yearly festival to do list. Not one to miss!

Standout from Ritual Union this year was rising star Pem. Her disarming indie folk rolls in waves of charming melodies. Dressed in a crochet balaclava, seemingly a trend of the festival, plus sleeves reminiscent of chainmail we were transported by a woollen medieval character into a swirl of indie. Pem, signed to Fascination Street Records earlier this month, was glowing with industry heat....

This band for me embody gen z alt-pop - and I love it! After hearing their single ‘Love Song’ back in November I was hooked. Building up to their debut album, released on the 16th February, each new single has its own boogiebility and freshness. I was enthralled by their live performance which matched the sharpness of the album, subtly mixing live and prerecorded elements with such ease. I look forward to hearing more music from this group, I feel there’s more hits coming our way. Words Holly Bradley
