Hello, Phobica Books readers and writers. This post will be a bit of a buzzkill I'm afraid. The comment below was left in response to our most recent submission call for 'Shivering Timbers!'. For those who have not figured out the theme of this antho yet, it be a pirate themed horror anthology, arrr!
Hopefully, the majority of you savvy lot could see that the accompanying image was meant to be a Jolly Roger with the traditional skull supplanted by the Phobica Books skull. I mean, I know my Microsoft Paint skills are rubbish, but, you could clearly tell it was a Jolly Roger, right?
Being from the UK, I wasn't entirely sure what the author of this post meant by, "that political stripe", so I gave "Punisher skull" and "political stripe" a Google. The first thing that struck me was that the only similarity between the Punisher skull and our Phobica skull is that, well, they're both skulls missing the mandible. It's a skull, this type of imagery is common in the horror genre. Even so, I have removed the offending Phobica Books Jolly Roger image from the Facebook groups I had posted them in. Maybe that's an overreaction on my part, but if one person mistook it for far right symbolism, then that's one too many.
Our only agenda is to entertain. I just want our anthologies to be fun, not to offend, and my aim isn't to insult or deride the author of the attached post, it is to provide clarity for the misinformed and for those who leap to conclusions despite evidence to the contrary.
Oh, and Phobica Books are in no way affiliated with Marvel Comics.

Steve Burford has been writing for several years in a variety of genres including YA and detective fiction. He has had a number of short stories and novels published, most recently a series of police procedural novels with the umbrella title “Summerskill and Lyon”, but his first love remains SF, fantasy and all things ‘weird’.

This week on Horror from the High Desert Podcast, Scotty talks to author Sam Rebelein about his short story "One Big Cry for Help" ("A Pile of Bodies, A Pile of Heads," Sinister Smile Press, 2021) and his debut novel "Edenville," which was just released in October from William Morrow. They talk awkward high-school memories, early horror influences, balancing humor with fear, and the idea of writing without limits. They also spend a few minutes on the cult-classic movie "Triangle" (2009), and Sam has some nice things to say about Scotty's recently published short story "Lilybet Lollipop" ("Terrors From the Toybox," Phobica Books, 2023).
