My role in the project to design and make a fridge magnet as part of the merchandise items for the Exhibition.

The goal of the merchandise team was to bring something memorable to a digital event.

The CAD design below shows the final version of the fridge magnet, this model was drawn in Fusion360 and rendered in KeyShot10.

The next stage will be to take this design, along with a finalised keyring, and make these items in real life.

Keep an eye out on my social media for our progress towards the exhibition on the 6th of May!

I am part of the CAD merchandise team for the Transmedia Exhibition, and our goal was to bring something physical to a digital event.

Our chosen items were a keyring and fridge magnet, these are a novelty product that offer scope for branding and modelling in CAD.

The images below shows some initial and developed versions of each item, these models were designed in Fusion360 and rendered in KeyShot10.

There is still more improvement needed to move forward to the manufacturing stage, but even my initial versions have some lovely aesthetic and practical features.

My Sketchbook 🎨🏛🧠

Today’s post showcases a few drawings from my favourite task during my first year of University.

The task was to create a series of observational sketches that captured different features around the main university campus.

Although we were given freedom on artistic mediums, the main challenge was to keep within a two-minute time limit.

The beauty of observational sketches through this frequency of creation, means you can capture certain features and details that particularly attract your attention.

I loved using tea-stained paper as a background for the Winton Chapel window sketch, as this reflects history behind the architecture.

What do you think of these sketches?😇👀

Year Two – ‘Transmedia Exhibition’ Project🎨🎟🏆

Today’s post is about my contribution to this year’s ‘Transmedia Exhibition’ as part of the Digital Media department at the University of Wi******er.

Transmedia is an annual event that takes place at the end of each academic year to showcase and celebrate the work of digital media students.

This year the event will be hosted online in the form of a brand-new website and virtual exhibition environment.

My role was being part of the 3D merchandise team. We wanted to to bring something physical and memorable to a digital event.

The initial sketches and two final merchandise ideas are pictured below.

A key ring and fridge magnet were selected as the final items, as they are useful and offer large creative scope for CAD design modelling.

My Sketchbook✏️📒🐚

Today’s post shows a few of my most recent paintings inspired by my photography from last year.

The first piece depicts a seascape of a beautiful beach in Cornwall. This was my first ever attempt at painting water and have often avoided the subject.

It is very challenging to capture a balance between the looseness of the waves, whilst still achieving a variation in tone to achieve the apperance of it being a liquid.

The others are landscape pieces of the picturesque views of Stour Head Gardens. These were slightly easier to produce, but still posed a challenge when it came to recreating the depth and distance through the trees.

I love using paint as an expressive medium, with the excuse to get a bit messy if needed. See more of my art-based work on my art Instagram .art

‘Geometric Gem’🧚‍♀️💍

Today’s post shows a mini project from my first semester of my second year.

This project gave me the freedom to design any object of my choice, except it had to contain the profile of a set 2D geometric shape (star).

I chose to recreate one of my favourite rings, and the sketches below show my initial ideas, including how the 2D shape could be incorporated into the model.

My final idea was to make it the centre piece of the ring.

The final design looks very effective, with a pink gemstone and gold metal work, and the original 2D shape visible from the top view.

This model was made in Fusion 360 and rendered in KeyShot 10.

If this existed in real life, I would definitely rock it with the rest of my hand jewellery!

What do you think of this ring design?🤩🤙

Year Two – Virtual Exhibition Project 📏🖼🖌PART 3

Today’s post marks the final instalment of my work as part of the ‘Virtual Exhibition Project'.

Check out my previous posts for the full story behind this group project from my first semester of year two.

The sketches below show the concept ideas for the interactive asset and user interface design of the virtual exhibition environment.

This includes how certain areas can glow or have a bolded outline to prompt and organically encourage people to investigate a specific object.

These features are common in any basic user interface design, such as in video games, television or websites etc. This is key for a positive and insightful user experience.

Even though I am not knowledgeable in the disciplines of development design, these sketches were still fun to create and contributed to the idea generation of this final part of the project.

My Sketchbook👟🧦✏️

In today’s post I am bringing you some of my favourite drawings from my old school sketchbooks.

These were created as part of an observation exercise, where we had to represent a subject of our choice.

I particularly enjoyed the freedom of this, even though shoes are quite hard to draw from certain angles, especially when areas of the subject appear stretched or foreshortened.

The use of mixed media and different colours brings an element of movement and roughness to these graphic sketches, and was inspired by the work of the artist Patrick Caulfield.

What do you think of these drawings?👇😇

Year Two – Virtual Exhibition Project 🎨🖼📏 PART 2

Today’s post is the next instalment of my design role in a group project last semester.

The aim of the project was to create a concept design of a virtual exhibition space, inspired by the interior of the new West Downs Campus building.

Catch up with the previous post for more details on the story behind the project.

My contribution was the CAD related work, this included the architectural drawing plans and 3D visualisation for the design of the exhibition environment.

As well as the virtual environment, there was also a need for some interior assets to make the space feel welcoming and life like.

The interior objects I contributed were a plinth, a plant and signpost models. I thought that this would add a more realistic feel to the virtual space, from seeing these as common items in existing museum spaces.

These models were enjoyable and easy to make on Fusion 360. Although the organic shape of the plant was time consuming to reproduce in such a industrial and graphic software, it was still a fun challenge in the end.

What do you think of these models?⭐️

Year Two – Virtual Exhibition Project💻🖼📏

Today’s post is about my part in a group project last semester.

The basis of the project was to create a concept of a virtual exhibition space, inspired by the interior of the new West Downs Campus building.

This exhibition space would be designed to present the work of students who are part of the digital media cohort, as well as functioning like a real-life exhibition environment.

The appearance of my design was inspired by the interior of galleries and museums I have visited in the past, my favourites are Tate Modern and the National Portrait Gallery.

The visuals below show the initial part of the design process, inspirational sketches, and illustrations, to the final 'gallery' aesthetic of the exhibition environment.

My role was the design of the 2D/3D architectural drawings to create the exhibition environment, market research and additional CAD modelling.

This was created and visualised using a software called ARCHICAD and Twinmotion, although I am not particularly interested in architecture this software was still fun to use.

The outcome for this project was used as inspiration for this year’s Digital Media ‘Transmedia Exhibition’, keep an eye on my posts for more information on this!

My Sketchbook🔑🖊💍

Today’s post is another instalment of drawings from my old sketchbooks.

These coloured mixed-media sketches are of random objects in my bedroom.

I created these drawings last year, after being inspired by the interesting composition and subject matter of the work of artist Michael Craig-Martin.

The combination of the biro and ink pen makes the colours pop without flattening the perspective of the objects.

My favourite is the green piece, I like the detail on the keying hook and cello tape holder.

My Sketchbook✏️🖊📒🎨

Today’s post marks the beginning of a new series of personal content relating to my hobbies of art and drawing.

The presence of creativity is already a clear part of my personality as a digital creator, but I also want to show my other creative outlets and better convey my personality to my fellow followers.

The images below show a series of fine liner doodles from a very old sketchbook.

I love observing the details and objects within my surroundings, quickly capturing my interpretation onto paper.

My favourite pieces are the earphone drawings, the mixture of precise and rough dark lines is a lovely contrast to the smooth surface of the paper.

Year Two – ‘Software Test’ Project💡💻

Today’s post is about my learning experience with a CAD software called Fusion 360.

The basis of this mini project was to follow a tutorial, that involved using multiple tools, on how to model and render a basic lamp.

Prior to this task I had some knowledge of Fusion 360, but this gave me the opportunity to familiarise myself with the modelling interface whilst creating something at the same time.

The other part of the project was to adapt the creative direction of the lamp shade, my inspiration was an old-fashioned office lamp with shiny green plastic and bronzy accents.

As well as rendering on Fusion 360, I also experimented with the lighting and environment tools on a software called Keyshot. This software is designed for creating highly realistic renders and scenes.

I think the final visualisation is very cool and was a fun way to experiment with new software to expand my creative portfolio.

What do you think of this lamp model?👀👩‍💻

Year Two – ‘The RSA Project’ 🎨🖍🧑‍🎨 PART 4

Today’s post is the final instalment of my RSA project.

If you have missed the posts throughout the week, the basis of this project was an idea for a social arts group called ‘The Community Artem’.

This concept initiative was created in response to the societal issue of elderly loneliness and isolation in small communities. Aiming to bring the generations together to provide mental health support through taking part in group art activities.

My design outcome for the project consisted of the branding design for ‘The Community Artem’ and product concept design of a portable art desk.

The photos below shows the CAD models and rendered visualisation of this art desk idea, its main features are built-in dividers and fold out desk.

The dividers would provide a means for social distancing between members, whilst the clear window would still enable users to socialise and enjoy the experience.

The CAD modelling process was very time consuming and tricky,
the moving (hinges) required the most attention and further improvement to reach a working concept.

Despite these difficulties, this product creation was still the aspect of the project I enjoyed the most, as it enabled me to further my software knowledge and modelling techniques.

What do you think of the finished product idea?😁🤟

Year Two – ‘The RSA Project’ 🎨🪑 PART 3

Today’s post continues this week’s topic of my RSA project.

Yesterday’s post covered the branding, digital platform, and marketing aspect of my design solution for the project.

Just to recap if you have not seen the recent posts, my design idea consisted of a social arts group idea called ‘The Community Artem’.

This was my creative response to elderly loneliness and isolation in small communities, the initiative would bring the young and old together to provide support for their mental health through the endless benefits of art activities.

The visuals below show the sketches for the product aspect of the art group and would be used for group meetings in a community hall or public venue setting.

This consists of a foldable art desk, with dividers and splash screen to make it COVID19 safe if used within the current reality.

I loved the opportunity to design a new product inspired by a real-life issue, and to also cover the appropriate ergonomic and functional details in relation to the target audience.

What do you think about these sketches and the desk idea?

Year Two – ‘The RSA Project’ 🎨🖱💻 PART 2

Today’s post continues from yesterday’s introduction to my RSA project.

Check it out to catch up on the full story, or read it all on my website now!!!
www.lucyhopkins.winchesterdigital.co.uk

The visuals below show the design process and final branding as part of my social arts group idea called ‘The Community Artem’. It would be for elderly individuals who feel isolated or lonely within a small community.

Bringing the generations of a town together and provide support for their mental health through the endless benefits of art activities.

The inspiration for the logo design came from the branding of existing elderly charities. The colours and layout of the logo are simple and brands the group with a welcoming appearance, whilst the teacup and paintbrush motifs represent the social and artistic aspects of the group.

I am pleased with the overall branding for my design solution idea and feel this would look very effective in an online or printed format.

Although design is not my main discipline, I still enjoy embracing new areas within the digital media industry.

What do you think of my logo and wireframe designs?😄🌈

Year Two – The Royal Society of Arts (RSA) Project🎨💡

Today’s post marks the beginning of my second year of university!

The outcome for this project was informed by the briefs from Royal Society of Arts annual competition, designed for students to answer a current social or environmental problem through a design solution idea.

My chosen brief was called ‘Bridging the Divide’ and the subject of my project was based on the social divide within community generations, with focus on the impact of social isolation on the elderly population.

My design solution in response to this issue combined my love for art with its benefits on our mental health. The basic idea consisted of a community creative arts group called ‘The Creative Artem’, based online and in local venues, with the aim to of bringing
the young and old together to participate in arts activities.

The process involved carrying out in depth research to inform the design and development of my design solution, a branded digital platform, and an art desk product concept.

All with the purpose of meeting needs of the elderly through multifaceted support and contribute in the mitigation of loneliness within the elderly generation.

Over the next couple of days, I will be covering the journey of this project, starting with the initial ideas and visuals of my product solution idea.

Would love to hear your thoughts down below!🤩✨

Year One – ‘The Digital Future of Art – Exhibition Design🎨📒

Today’s post marks the final project of my first year of university!

The task was to design and model a exhibition idea that presented a subject in the way that we believed it would exist in the future.

The topic I chose was (of course) art and art history, designed for school children with virtual and interactive exhibits to create an immersive learning experience.

The first image shows a graphic visual to be presented next to each exhibit and would describe the unique interaction for each area.

The second image shows the developed sketches of the exhibition, including the main idea of a ‘smart art table’. This would act as a digital colouring table, projecting an image of a painting onto the surface for visitors to trace onto paper, or just the table work in their sketchbooks.

The final image shows the initial CAD model of the structure of the exhibition space. The final designs and finished information graphics can be seen on my website! www.lucyhopkins.winchesterdigital.co.uk

This project was very fun, with previous experience planning a real exhibition for the end of course show as part of my art diploma course. The full process from sketching to fabricating the final design for others to see and enjoy is so rewarding.

What do you think of this idea for an exhibition? 👓
Would love to hear your opinions down below! 👇😇
