With more than a third of the votes, Great Lakes Brewing Company, a microbrewery based in Cleveland, Ohio, has won the second Colored by INX can design contest organised by INX International Ink Co.

The label design for the Crushworthy Lo-Cal Citrus Wheat beer can made by Ball Corporation won with 264 votes, 80 more than runner-up Jackie O's Brewery. Voting took place on INX’s page and concluded on 17 May after a week.

The UK’s largest supermarket Tesco is planning to be the first major retailer to scrap plastic ring carriers on cans and shrink-wrap packaging from all beers and ciders in its stores.

The move, made in conjunction with many leading drinks brands, will lead to 50 million fewer items of unrecycled plastic being produced each year.

James Crampton, corporate affairs director at Heineken UK, said: “Never has sustainability been so high on the agenda and we are incredibly proud to work with Tesco, who like us, see the important role we both play in helping to protect the future of our planet.

Voting opened on May 10th for the beverage can design competition organised by INX International Ink Co., North America’s third largest ink producer.

The competition, run by the Schaumburg, Illinois-based company, closes on Monday 17 May, with the winning design scheduled to be announced the following day.

Judged by representatives from INX, five finalists were selected based on originality, overall design aesthetics, best use of the colour palette and a project statement indicating how colour factored into the final designs. The finalists and their product names are:

Wis-Pak Wis-Pak, DOC Soda
Brewery Ommegang, Neon Rainbows IPA
Duvernois Creative Spirits, Romeo’s Gin Spritz
