🌟 Before you can convince others, you need to have a solid foundation of self-confidence. Confidence from others will not be forthcoming if they cannot sense it within you.

🤔 Consider every angle of your vision in as much depth as possible, being critical will allow you to anticipate potential reservations in your audience.

It may be cliche but it starts from within.

If you want to change how people are responding to you, then look at how you are responding to others.

If you want to change the impact that you have on others. Then look at the impact that others are having on you. 

If you want to support others. Then you must be able to support yourself first.

📱 Is the media all it's hyped up to be?
 
With all the technology in our lives today, we view so much unsolicited media.

While I do ask Alexa to tell me the news every now and again, most of the time I’m being served up information I didn’t ask for through advertisements online, influencers on social media, and Chinese whispers from friends, family and clients I meet each day. 

Reducing your exposure to information that you aren’t asking for will reduce your anxiety and keep your mind in check. 

Obviously I’m not suggesting that you lock yourself away and become a hermit, but switching off notifications on your phone and computer, not checking the news regularly, and being mindful of the topics that your in-person conversations are covering will all help to not sway or influence your thinking subconsciously.

It’s one thing to know the effect that you have on others but are you aware of the effect that others have on you?

Being aware of how your environment is impacting you is SUPER important. 

Your energy can easily be drained by certain people and places so make sure you are really tuning into how you are feeling throughout the day and making note of where you are and who you are with to identify the things that influence you positively and negatively.

Becoming more attuned to your surroundings allows you to place yourself better through daily life and take precautions where necessary in order to protect your energy and general wellbeing.

You can also take it a step further by identifying the people and places that leave you feeling the most influential, and maximising your time spent with them.

Often, how we see ourselves is very different to how others see us.

And assuming that others see us in a certain way leads us to some misleading ideas.

It can seem a little weird but I am always asking people how they see me so that I can keep my self-image aligned. I can easily create stories around how I am perceived by others and when I actually ask people, some of my stories are often untrue.

Asking for feedback from others is a really useful tool that allows you to tweak your actions and keep your self image aligned.

This is not about living through the eyes of others and changing who you are to suit other people, it’s merely soliciting feedback which you are free to take or leave and gaining knowledge as to how you are truly coming across so that you can make changes where necessary IF you want to.

🛠 Influence is the most powerful tool in the arsenal of today's workplace leaders.

When looking to earn the respect of others, especially when you are in a leadership position, it can be tempting to rely on some form of authority. Whether this is authority of position, or experience, or skills, it doesn't matter, it's still a major crutch.

When leaning on authority, you have an audience who is listening out of obligation, not necessarily engagement or investment.

Influence is more democratic, using it you can authentically resonate with those around you, as you more subtly weave empathy and energy into an idea which hits home.

Whether you are a team leader, thought leader, or just a manager of your own life, ensure your influence skills are up to scratch.

You can’t influence others positively if you are influencing yourself negatively. 

How often do you compliment yourself? 

How often do you smile at yourself in the mirror?

What conversations are going on inside of your head?

Our outer worlds reflect our inner worlds and if you are talking to yourself overwhelmingly critically, not treating yourself with kindness or not boosting yourself on a daily basis then you will find it difficult to positively influence others.

If you want to increase your positive influence on others then start practicing habits such as those above, which positively influence yourself.

Action will only occur when the desire for action is stronger than the desire for inaction.

Until you create a stronger desire to want to do something you will have a hard time getting it done,
but if you dig deeper in to find out exactly what is holding you back (fear, finances, energy levels - it
could be a number of things!) then you will be able to tackle that obstacle specifically and remove the resistance for yourself.

If this isn’t enough on it’s own then you will need to link a bigger payoff to getting the action done
than you already have in your mind.

So think of the bigger rewards, or the ways you can reward yourself after you’ve completed the
action.

We’re not always naturally motivated to do the things we need to do, but do them we must!

Often gaining some quick wins can energise you to tackle the bigger things.

Quick wins can be completing a few smaller and quicker tasks to free up mental space to tackle
the bigger ones.

Careful though, you don’t want to fall into a cycle of procrastination with doing anything and
everything BUT the thing you are supposed to be!

What I find the most effective way of motivating myself is promising myself a reward after I get the task done or removing something I want until the task is complete.

An example of this would be, I can’t eat breakfast until my morning cardio is done! My hunger always motivates me to get it done.

⚖ Many first time parents are consumed by the desire to identify the perfect balance between career and parenthood. This often impossible search puts a lot of unnecessary pressure on parents during what should be a joyful time.

Is maintaining both career and parenthood in a completely regimental co-existence even possible?

Perhaps, but in doing so you leave very little space for YOU – and you may lose grip of your identity as you spiral towards burnout.

When we need direction in life, tuning into our deeply held affections can help to guide us to the right path. This is important at times when your sense of direction becomes obscured and complicated, perhaps due to shifting responsibilities or a big life change that requires evaluation.

For working parents, this often comes in the form of navigating between career and family. Ensuring both are given their dues is difficult, and requires attunement to a deeper understanding of what is important in each moment.

In our Special Edition, Blended Pursuits, we explore some of these techniques in greater detail – here’s an example:

‘When having to make choices between work and family, deeply focus on what you really love doing, and try to work towards that. There will often be one thing or another making you feel guilty but try to remember that every family is different. Identify what makes your work meaningful, and hold onto it, but don’t get lost in work, as your family likely doesn’t need a workaholic. If this is likely to be a problem be sure to maintain open communication with family and colleagues.’

🕐 We all have times when we feel as though there is not enough time in the day. For working parents, this sensation is amplified.

Simply finding enough time to succeed at work whilst ensuring that you support your family to your full capacity can be more difficult than achieving the lofty goals you need to find time for in the first place.

This is why time management – an already crucial career skill – is a vital part of being a working parent.

You have the power to influence ever single person that you come across every single day. 🤝

You have the ability to influence their mood, their energy levels, their thoughts and even their behaviour.

Have you ever had a stranger compliment you on your appearance?

Or perhaps someone you didn’t know wished you a good morning?  

How did it make you feel? 
Joyful? Energised? Perhaps it made you smile and hold your head a little higher? 

You have that same influential power over everyone that you meet or even see. 

Having a positive influence on someone doesn’t always mean deep and meaningful conversations or profound words on your social media profile. 

It can simply be a smile, a wave, a comment.

⚖ Communication makes the difference between imbalance and fairness.

Being able to clearly and confidently express yourself is a key worklife skill, but this is doubly true for working parents.

Problems can easily arise when there is a sense of disparity or that teamwork is lacking. Or even if it is not the source of the problem, improving communication allows issues to be resolved more fluidly.

Here is our advice from our Parenting Supplement ‘Blended Pursuits’:

Honest conversation and upfront agreement in your relationships is crucial. Decide on what responsibilities lie with whom and try to divide this as close to 50/50 as possible. Be sure to address any issues ASAP, for example if one partner feels as though they are being treated unfairly then you should discuss this to avoid it becoming a feeling of resentment. The sooner the better – if you can discuss plans before your first child is born that is ideal.

🤱 It's no surprise that working parents do a lot of caring.

They spend a lot of time caring for their children, and equally they care a lot about their careers - and finding the harmony between the two.

While it is difficult to strike this balance, it can be done. However when even more responsibilities are added to the mix, the ratio becomes increasingly unstable.

Sandwich carers are those who are responsible for caring for their own children as well as elderly relatives.

In this instance it becomes increasingly difficult to progress in career - let alone rest and recuperate.

This issue is also gendered, the vast majority of sandwich carers being Women.

Naturally you will want to do right by your family, but having never done it before you may be uncertain whether you face up to the task.

This doubt can indeed impact parenting performance as you may spend too much time second-guessing yourself, or withdrawing to avoid doing damage.

This can be caused by a lack of positive role models in your own youth, or simply inexperience.

This is a form of impostor syndrome, and typically manifests in different ways for mothers and fathers.

🍽 A good meal is easy to look forward to - but are you eating for the right reasons? 
 
Finding comfort in food is common, and it’s a practice known as emotional eating. Negative emotions may lead to a feeling of emptiness and food is then associated as a way to fill that void and create a feeling of “fullness” or temporary wholeness.
 
But this feeling is false and reaching for food to suppress and soothe negative feelings may leave you feeling guilt or shame after the fact, in turn leading to a cycle of excess eating and associated issues which doesn’t end until we address our emotional needs head on.
 
🧘‍♀️ Explore alternative methods to deal with stress - journaling, reading, walking, meditating etc. Experiment with different activities to see which works best for you.
 
📒 Keep a food diary - Tracking your consumption and your emotions will allow you to identify triggers so that you can deal with them.
 
🥗 Eat a balanced diet regularly - Ensuring your meals are nutritionally balanced and eaten regularly will keep hormones balanced, energy levels high, and stop overdue hunger cues that can lead to binge eating.
 
🥜 Prepare healthy meals and snacks in advance so that they are easy to grab in a moment which will avoid you reaching for unhealthy and nutritionally unbalanced options.

❄ Either way, be sure that you do not fall into self comparison, everyone works differently, so unfair comparisons will not help you prove yourself.

🎯 Don’t let anxiety overwhelm you, others might succeed where you struggle, but this does not reflect on your capabilities.
