We are thrilled that ‘Last Eye Witness’ won its category at the Royal Automobile Motoring Book Awards. When we first published the book, we were not sure whether it was something our customers would appreciate, so we decided to restrict publication to just 100 copies per year. Last December, when we launched, we sold the 2023 batch of 100. In January this year, we sold this year’s 100 and created a waiting list for the 2025 edition. In preparation, we have just had another 100 printed and bound. These will be released in December in time for Christmas.

As we mentioned in yesterday's post, Spy Octane is in its final stages, and our wonderful Wales-based printers Gwasg Gomer Press have sent us this video of the printing press in action. I think we can legitimately say that these pages are shaken, not stirred.....

Pre-orders are now open for Spy Octane - The Vehicles of James Bond. The team are in the final stages with this one now and it is looking superb! Meticulously researched by acclaimed Bond historians Matthew Field and Ajay Chowdhury, Spy Octane details the complete story behind 007’s debonair but deadly Aston Martin DB5 – before, during and after its appearances in Goldfinger and Thunderball. It also unearths the secrets behind the autogyro 'Little Nellie', the rocket-firing BSA Lightning, the convertible Toyota 2000GT, the Ford Mustang that balanced on two wheels – and many more. An absolute must for Bond fans! Link in comments.

We were bowled over to receive a second win at the Royal Automobile Club 2024 Motoring Book Awards, this time in the keenly contested category for ‘Books On A Motor Sporting Subject With No Price Limit’. The Last Eye Witness – written by pre-eminent motorsport historian Doug Nye and showcasing the remarkable pre-World War One photography of Maurice Louis Branger – saw off stiff opposition to claim the award. Congratulations to Doug, and again, many thanks to our team here at Porter Press. Link in comments.

The Porter Press team are absolutely delighted to have won the Royal Automobile Club 2024 Motoring Book Of The Year Award for The Austin Pedal Car Story. Written by Dr David Whyley (the world’s leading authority on the subject) and commissioned by Austin Pedal Cars this 488-page book tells the incredible, unique story of the Austin J40 in unprecedented detail, from the South Wales factory that was set up to rehabilitate former miners to the J40’s starring role in the Goodwood Revival’s annual Settrington Cup race. A wonderful book, and a wonderful team who worked so hard to produce it – and with special congratulations to David who brought such heart to the story. Link in comments.

The lovely customer reviews keep coming in for 'Three Men in a Land Rover': ''Such a good book. I love this book! I'd originally bought it as I know one of the contributors so was interested... and it looks good and is "different" on a coffee table. I quickly became riveted by the endeavour... and a fan! One of the great things about it is it can be read through and devoured, taken a few chapters at a time or it can be picked up flicked through and enjoyed. I have had visitors asking about it and revelling in it as much as I do. It was an amazing journey and the crew and vehicle must have been enormously robust. The area that is covered is vast and through what are now almost terrifying parts of the world. I love some of the humour! I look at Land Rovers with increased respect and its good to be reminded that they so often are now seen with glam Mums on school runs! are great vehicles able to accomplish big tasks... but they need a good crew and vehicle TEN 423 had that! Not only have Porter Press books received five nominations in the Royal Automobile Club annual Book Awards, which we believe is a record and more than twice as many as any other publisher, but we have just been told that The Last Eye Witness by Doug Nye has also been short-listed by the International Historic Motoring Awards for Book of the Year and so has JaguarSport XJR-15 by Peter Stevens. All credit, of course, to the authors and to our amazing team.

“If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.” So said Oscar Wilde, one of the most quoted and celebrated writers in the English language, who was born 170 years ago today. And many of our customers would heartily concur – so many of the lovely reviews we receive talk about how much they enjoy dipping into our books time and time again. As many of you know, the wonderful special editions we produce are handbound and finished by Ludlow Bookbinders, who truly elevate these books into works of art. Each year they hold the Ludlow Fine Book Fair at Ludlow Racecourse, and this year it will be on 26-27th October, in the Clive Pavilion. It is a celebration of books old and new, leather binding and fine letterpress printing, along with associated arts, crafts and materials. Porter Press will have a small display there over both days so do come and say hello if you are planning a visit.

Another wonderful review for Brawn BGP 001/02 – The Autobiography of Jenson Button’s World Championship Winner. 'Porter Press continues to set the standard. The latest book in the ‘Great Cars’ series is another triumph. I am not a large collector of F1 books but I purchase every Porter Press publication as a matter of course. The standard of layout, detail and picture quality is of such a consistent quality that all their books are such an enjoyable read.' Ash M.

The Settrington Cup is always one of the most competitive – and energetic – races at Goodwood Revival. No surprise then to see some of the competitors were safely tucked up before the day was done.
