Last time I published a post like this, you really enjoyed celebrating fellow local businesses with me, so let's go for it again!

I spotted some incredible content last week that I believe deserves a shoutout!

*Quick Disclaimer: While Iโ€™ve highlighted just a few businesses here, I know many of you are out there creating amazing content and celebrating your successes. I always try to like and comment on as many posts as I can, but the algorithm doesnโ€™t show me everything I want to see. If youโ€™re a local business owner and sharing something special, please feel free to tag meโ€”Iโ€™d love to see it!

Anyway,
Here's some cool stuff I spotted last week:

Tiny & Together You're clearly doing something right as you're all over my feed right now ๐Ÿคฉ
You're posting a great mix of informative flyers, as well as photos of your fun and engaging sessions. Great work ๐Ÿ‘

Loved Once Again - Your page is constantly updated with new ideas and initiatives for rehoming items. A special mention as well for doing something that so few will attempt - going live ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Swadlincote Electrical Supplies - Yea, ok, it's no secret that I manage their account so I basically just awarded myself ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคฃ but hear me out!
Last week a long-standing member of staff left, and then returned again within a few days. We had a little fun with this on Social Media which caused huge spikes in their engagement and growth so I'm including them to give you an idea for bringing some emotion into your posts, as well as sharing a sense of humour.

NP Therapies - It looks like a busy time for your business right now, new treatments, new website, new social media graphics, as well as some videos that have popped up on my feed. Well done for investing the time into developing your business - and keeping your audience engaged with what's next!

A Yap me Dog Your page feels friendly and welcoming - exactly the feel you'd want from a pet-grooming business.
You post gorgeous photos of happy pooches and always some details about what they came in for and how they found their grooming session. Clearly lots of engagement too - I can see why your clients love bringing their pets to you!

Well done all ๐Ÿ™Œ

As local, small business owners, let's keep supporting one another, sharing our achievements and celebrating our wins , together- as a community โค๏ธ

Why Donโ€™t I Post on Weekends?
Because lots of you are busily doing fun weekend things - not scrolling Facebook for my marketing posts ๐Ÿ˜…

(Plus having a couple of days off posting gives me a nice break ready for a new week ๐Ÿ˜‰)

This is why having a smart social media strategy is key. Itโ€™s not just about posting randomly when an idea pops into your head, itโ€™s about knowing your audience.

Who are your followers?
Why do they need your services?
What content do they need to become your customers?
When are they online and ready to engage?
Where do they spend their time scrolling?

For example, I have a client who requests 3 posts a week. After analysing their audience (and testing a few ideas), the data showed that their followers are most active on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, so thatโ€™s when we focus our content.

Other essential parts of my strategy include:

Identifying which content resonates best with their audience.
Personalising content to build trust and familiarity
Keeping an eye on competitors' posts to stay one step ahead.

Do you have a strategy? Or are you just wingin' it?
Just consider how much more effective your content would be if you had a strategy in place.

Am I too old to wear this?

This is a question I've found myself asking more and more. Something about turning 35 triggered this major shift in my mind and I no longer feel able to do the same things I did in my 20s.

We took our kids to Disneyland this past week, and age no longer mattered. In fact, a lot of things no longer mattered.

Everyone was safe to be and embrace who they really were; not only that but they were celebrated for it.
I saw so many people of all shapes, sizes, colours, ages, interests, cultures, religions and backgrounds, all enjoying Disney magic together.

The restrictions of social norms just didn't exist there.
Women dressed as superheroes, men wearing full faces of flawless make-up (extra shout-out to the man wearing the glittery butterfly hair clips - you looked amazing!)
Children free to be whichever character their imagination chooses that day.
Same-sex couples openly celebrate their love for each other.
People of multiple beliefs and religions sharing smiles laughs and screams of terror together on rollercoasters.

This post is starting to sound like an advert for Disney Land - it's not. It's about people and that we should all celebrate who we are and what makes us different, not fight over it.

The princess-loving little girl inside me wanted to wear a pretty dress and twirl in front of Cinderellaโ€™s castle - so I did!

I twirled harder than I've ever twirled before and I felt absolutely no embarrassment or judgement, that's what this post is about.

We should feel free to embrace the and relish our differences, without judgement โ€“ wherever we are.

As Walt Disney said 'Donโ€™t let your fears take the place of your dreams'

And I think that's a message worth sharing.

You've got to be brave to be an entrepreneur and business owner.
You've got to step out of that comfort zone, sometimes going against the advice of everyone around you.

One day you might look back and realise that the risk you took back, was the best thing you ever did!

Anyone needing a nudge to make that brave move right now - go for it!

Happy Bank Holiday Monday!

Do you know, when I was employed, waking up on a Monday morning always filled me with dread. I've always been passionate, always had lots of ideas and been eager to implement them to achieve results. However when you end up with a manager who doesn't welcome contributions, you find yourself feeling very frustrated, knowing you have more to offer.

Now I have the freedom to roll with my ideas (though I need to get better at picking one and going for it, rather than implementing 6-8 ideas at any one time ๐Ÿ˜‚).

My ideas bring get my business noticed. They bring sales for businesses I partner with. Never again will I work for someone that won't let me use my creativity to achieve goals and deliver the desired results.

Soooooo, what does this week hold for you?

I've put some time to one side to update my website.

Are you working on anything different? Are the Summer Holidays a busier or quieter time for you? What do you want to achieve this week?

Well, I've been so busy working on content for other businesses this week, I've neglected my own page and have nothing of value to offer you today.

So here's a video of my 6 happy chickens happily enjoying their lunch.

Make up your own story linking it to my business and how I've grown over the years if you like ๐Ÿ‘

But quite honestly, it's the first video in my camera roll and the Summer Holidays are too busy to create new content every day ๐Ÿคฃ
Also, my chickens are pretty cute, aren't they? ๐Ÿ˜Žโค๏ธ

20/08/2024

I want to help everyone.
It sounds lovely, but I've quickly discovered that it's not a great trait in a business owner, it makes them vulnerable.
I've been burned a few times by trying to help people who were only out for their own gain.

Unfortunately, it's becoming all too common. I've learned to say 'no'.

What I've built through years of marketing and nurturing, is a network - a community of businesses who care what I have to say, and want to support each other and help each other thrive. I'm flippin' proud of it.

My audience is small, but they're engaged! Onlookers see that and want to latch on to me and my brand to access my audience and sell their offers. That friendly 'let me take you for lunch as we're both entrepreneurs' becomes 'let me sell my services to your network'.
Nope.

You can't just take!
There's no shortcut to having a network of people who know, like and trust you, you have to EARN that and prove that you're worthy of that trust.

I've developed a keen eye for those who genuinely have excellent products and services that might be of benefit to small businesses, and those who suddenly want to become my best friend in order to leach off my contacts.

Over the past few months, I've been saying no. I'm sure I will sometimes decline offers that could have turned out well, but I will continue to protect my business, its reputation and my network of business owners who I owe my every accomplishment to.

Now it's your turn.
If you have a customer that you feel may be particularly difficult, maybe will take up too much time changing their mind constantly, will expect you to do way more than the time you've quoted for, or potentially won't pay - save yourself the hassle.

You've built your business and its reputation. Get wise to the takers and time-wasters and don't be afraid to say no if those red flags are flying!

Have you ever said no to a customer/client? What was the final straw before you decided they weren't the right fit for your business?

Anyway,

Here's some cool stuff I spotted last week:

Chameleon School of Construction Ltdwere featured on BBC Breakfast News - LIVE! The whole team did an excellent job!

Swadlincote and Burton Slimming World with Moira crowned their annual winner of the year and created some fantastic content with lots of personality included!

Feetopia , launched a brand new, shiny website created by local web designer Think Jarvis - it looks fantastic and I know this was a big move for Claire and showing her commitment to her role and professionalism.

Crown Kickboxing are running their annual T-shirt competition, a brilliant way to publish user-generated content and show lots of happy members proudly showing off their skills and Club T-shirts - great marketing!

Churchills Traditional Sweet Shop fully embraced 'Ey Up Me Duck Day'! Lots of great posts coming from their page to show us what was happening in store and in town this past weekend. It all looked very fun to be a part of!

That's it for now!

I may start to introduce this as a regular feature to make it easier for us to recognise and celebrate each other, what do you think?

Hereโ€™s my round up of last week:

What went well:
๐Ÿ™ŒAchieved over a 3,000% hike in engagement for an existing client now that I am running their company LinkedIn account
๐Ÿ™ŒOnboarded a new regular client
๐Ÿ™ŒSigned off the Small Business Showcase 2025!!
๐Ÿ™ŒBooked 2 more dates for the โ€˜Marketing for beginnersโ€™ workshops for South Derbyshire District Council
๐Ÿ™ŒMade a decision on which path to go with my business and will start to implement those plans ready to launch in Autumn
๐Ÿ™ŒSurvived School Uniform shopping

What didnโ€™t go well: (Iโ€™m breaking the social media norm to prove that weโ€™re all human, we all get overwhelmed, make mistakes or bad decisions, and we all try to grow and learn from them!)

๐Ÿ‘ŽI dropped my phone so had to immediately replace it.
๐Ÿ‘ŽMissed a meeting โ€“ yes, just missed it!
I hadnโ€™t moved across all of my diary entries to the new phone, the Summer Holidays are a whirlwind with 3 kids at home and I simply missed it. I was very embarrassed and apologised profusely! Fortunately, they were very understanding and happy to reschedule but this was a first for me โ€“ itโ€™ll be the last!

What did you achieve this last week?

15/08/2024

Our very own Chameleon School of Construction Ltd was live on BBC Breakfast News this morning!

Iโ€™ve known Centre Manager Teresa for a little while now, and I know how passionate she is about her learners and giving them the opportunities they deserve, along with being a part of our local business community here in Swadlincote.

Theresa and Chameleon team, you guys smashed it!! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’ช

Will you all join me in saying a massive well done to all those involved - another great big win for Swadlincote!

When your business succeeds, whether on a small or large scale - you deserve to be celebrated!

If your business is struggling, someone locally will share those challenges.

This is why I'm on a mission to encourage our local entrepreneurs, businesses, clubs, charities and organisations to work together- because everyone benefits, everyone grows and everyone gets the support they need.

If I recognise a knowledge gap, I will arrange a workshop.
People expressing the need to get out and meet more people to share their troubles with? Let's have a friendly social session.
1-2-1 support needed? More brew and boost free marketing mornings.

So keep talking, keep engaging, keep reaching out, keep supporting each other. Let's grow Swadlincote's vibrant business community - together!

14/08/2024

Why did I invite 50 small business owners to a marketing workshop, only to sabotage their first impression of me?

The first half of the video is tough to watch, right? Trust me, it felt just as awkward to deliver!

This particular workshop was designed to give business owners confidence when exhibiting at events.

I could have simply told them to smile and greet customers, or I could create an experience they wouldn't forget.

I wanted them to FEEL what their customers feel when they're ignored or left to figure things out on their own (check a Facebook post, contact a secretary, find a page on a website etc).

It was a risky move, but the feedback was clear: that initial discomfort drove home the point that a simple greeting, confidence in your business, and readiness to talk about your brand are essential for building trust.

So, Facebook friends - did my awkward intro make you squirm as much as it did me? Was it a powerful way to deliver an important message, or too risky to sabotage my own first impression like that?

With September approaching fast, shall I gather a bunch of us, put a date in the diary and have a back-to-school, refocus session?

I know many of us are juggling the challenges of running a business while managing the demands of family life, especially during the Summer holidays. This gives us the opportunity to regroup and discuss our upcoming workload, challenges and goals with other supportive entrepreneurs. I might even chuck in a few marketing tips for good measure ;)

Who's in?

Drop your availability below, I'm looking at w/c the 9th of September โ˜บ๏ธ
