A kind-hearted police community support officer paid a special visit to a Beeston care home to celebrate a resident’s 106th birthday. 🎂

PCSO Chris Jones presented birthday girl Olive Sanderson with a floral display along with a personalised birthday card from our Beeston neighbourhood policing team after popping into HC-One’s Silverwood Care Home.

He said: “We initially visited the care home on Saturday 7 December for a Christmas fayre event.

“We engaged with the residents and the staff and had a jolly good time.

"While at the fayre I was notified that one of the residents was celebrating her 106th birthday in a few days’ time. After clarifying the date with the upcoming birthday girl, I promised Olive that I would pop in for her big day on Tuesday (10 December).

“Policing is a very varied job and the community work we do, including attending engagement events like these, is so important.

“It was a great pleasure to have the opportunity to celebrate the birthday of a lady who was born in 1918 - a beautiful caring lady who always seems to have a lovely smile on her face.

“Olive was pleased to see me and actually said ‘you remembered to come back and see me.’"

Olive, who is originally from south Leicestershire, moved to Beeston about 30 years ago and has been a resident at the care home for two years and three months.

She grew up working on her family’s farm, and later went on to become a landlady, running not one but two pubs, where she honed her love of good company and conversation.

Olive’s daughter, Leonore Slade, said:

“I think she realised people were making a bit of a fuss of her on her 106th birthday and she enjoyed it.

"PCSO Jones gave her a lovely basket of flowers and a card which I really appreciate.”

To mark Olive’s amazing milestone, the care home asked for people to send birthday cards to her.

They had a great response – with Olive receiving around 350 cards from well-wishers including from local schools, a nursery, and the local community.

Senior carer Gemma Moss said: “Olive’s had an incredible life – and she doesn’t look 106! It was really nice that Chris popped in to see her on her birthday. I think Olive was really touched by that as well.”

Hello from the Broxtowe borough neighbourhood policing team inspector.

This month I attended the community safety briefing with Broxtowe borough councillors and council representatives. I presented updates in relation to crime, anti-social behaviour and ongoing policing operations. I answered concerns raised by the councillors and explained how problem-solving plans were in place to address the issues in the area.

For the final quarter of the year, we have reviewed and discussed in our monthly multi-agency meeting the current priorities:

1. Theft of motorbikes and shop thefts have decreased in November with several arrests and positive action on criminal behaviour orders. This priority will be closed at the end of December.

2. Vehicle anti-social behaviour including car cruising. Operation Wheelspin has been conducted on five occasions since November where traffic offence reports and Section 59 notices were issued to drivers and vehicles. During the recent operations there has been a reduction of vehicles in the area causing anti-social behaviour. Therefore, this will no longer be a priority for the Broxtowe neighbourhood policing area, however this will continue be to run locally by the neighbourhood policing team as part of the forcewide Operation Wheelspin.

3. Anti-social behaviour in Eastwood and Kimberley has seen an improvement, with a reduction in reported anti-social behaviour incidents. Police have been completing high visibility patrols and engaging with the community. This priority will continue into the next quarter as residents and partners have continued to raise their concerns around anti-social behaviour in the Eastwood south area. Police are working with Broxtowe Borough Council and youth intervention to assist with the patrol plan.

New policing priorities for Broxtowe will be decided in January. In the meantime our work as a neighbourhood policing team is ongoing to keep people safe and tackle crime.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support this year. From myself and the neighbourhood policing team Happy Christmas and New Year.

Inspector Usha Madaraa

Just a quick update on the tree in the square. Officers have been out to check it and have confirmed that despite the lean it is securely held at the base and not at risk of falling. They will continue to monitor over the weekend, and will take action if needed. All being well, they will be out on Monday to straighten it after the winds have passed.
