🚨 Social Care is in Crisis.
🏥 Tens of thousands of people in the UK are sent away from their families & neighbourhoods & can end up in institutional services, sometimes for the rest of their lives - yet there is another way.

Radical Roots: Anti-Racism and Challenging Systemic Inequalities
Sheffield has a reputation for strong working class roots, but how does this translate in terms of race? Historic communities of colour live across the city. What do they see of the history (and possible future) Sheffield has for racial justice?
This live stream - the final in a series examining radical roots in Sheffield - brings together a number of changemakers who live and work in Sheffield.
The panel includes Ursula Myrie (founder of Adira), Ishah Jawaid (founder of the WOC Azadi Collective) and Annalisa Toccara (founder of Our Mel), chaired by writer and researcher Maryam Jameela.
Radical Veganism: A Panel Discussion
An in-depth look at veganism's place in radical politics. Our panel of philosophers, activists and animal rights experts will tackle the biggest questions surrounding veganism in politics today. When does veganism become militant? Is there a cognitive dissonance in being a radical leftist and carnist? And are apolitical vegans even vegan at all?
The vegan movement has become increasingly detached from the radical roots which birthed it. We want to bring intersectionality back to the centre of the discussion.
We will be covering some mature content surrounding suffering and systemic oppression, however we wish to make the event as inclusive and accessible as possible. All are welcome, regardless of their political and lifestyle choices. Live captioning will be available. The event will include the opportunity for a Q&A session at the end.
Tick Boxes
Join us for a screening of the first episode of the Seldom Heard Communities Docuseries: ‘Tick Boxes’, followed by a panel discussion with the creators & contributors.
Tick Boxes gives a voice to members of Sheffield’s Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities as they organise to support themselves and each other during the COVID-19 pandemic. After years of being starved of resources and used simply as ‘Tick Boxes’, these diverse Sheffield BAME groups demonstrate remarkable creativity and solidarity in their efforts to protect the most vulnerable members of our community.
Building Networks to Make Change
The real challenges we face in society can often seem overwhelming, too big to even begin to tackle. The problems are usually very complex and deeply entwined with issues that affect people in many different ways, often requiring change on many levels.
Over the last five years, the UBI Lab Network has grown from one small team of people in Sheffield to a network of 40 citizen led groups across the globe advocating for trials of Universal Basic Income. With the support of over 400 elected representatives across the UK, it has passed over 30 council motions across Britain and turned UBI into a mainstream policy proposition.
Alongside us on this journey has been the burgeoning Citizen Network, which as a global Cooperative operates as a platform for citizens to collaborate, share learning and join together in action. Citizen Network is connecting people, organizations and systems leading to better citizenship and better societies.
Join us to hear the story so far, alongside our friends and allies at Citizen Network, and learn about how to build an active and influential network that is able to start making a difference across a range of systemic problems and issues of collective concern.
As Margaret Mead once said: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
The Peak District: Nature Impoverished
The Peak District is one of the natural treasures of the UK, yet it is greatly degraded and impoverished. As Dr Alexander Lees notes, he sees more birds in the centre of Manchester than on Kinder Scout.
Wild Justice is at the centre of national efforts to tackle the underlying cause of this issue, which is also a significant factor in the UK ranking 189th of 218 countries for the State of Nature, the management of land for driven grouse shooting and other forms of hunting.
It could be so different. Instead of travelling abroad to see charismatic wildlife, Britons could be coming to the Peak District instead to see golden eagles, pine martens, maybe even one day lynx. This event will explore the problems, the causes and the possibilities for a rich, healthy, flourishing Peak, working for surrounding communities, wildlife and the planet - and identifying what individuals can do to lead the change.
Featuring Dr Alexander Lees (Senior Lecturer in Biodiversity at Manchester Metropolitan University) and from Wild Justice, Dr Mark Avery (writer, blogger and environmental campaigner). Chaired by Natalie Bennett, Green Party peer.
