As Valencia in Spain experienced horrific flooding killing more than 200 people, members of Sheffield Extinction Rebellion gathered outside the office of AON on Napier Street. Climate scientist Bill McGuire explained on Twitter “ What's happening in Valencia is awful. But we are only seeing this because it is happening in a white, developed, nation, at the heart of Europe. The truth is that the supercharging of extreme weather means this sort of catastrophe is happening somewhere almost every day.”...

A guest blog by Stephen Pennels The coming of Storm Ashley this week is chicken feed compared to the recent problems across the world with cars washed down streets, in country after country. Sheffield has had its share of floods over the years, in 1991 the Sheaf left a branch on platform 5 of the station. But we benefit from living in a rich country that can put itself back together again....

We must talk to the kids about the birds and the bees say a couple in a cartoon. The next panel shows a desolate landscape and the parents saying “Birds and bees used to fly in the sky…”. It’s not easy talking to young people about the many crises our planet is facing and that is true for both parents and teachers....

My previous post was removed by Facebook as it allegedly broke "Community Standards" though they haven't told me which. It was simply a link to my latest blog about the demo for Palestine on Saturday. Please go to TellthetruthSheffield.org and share it.

Green activist Graham Wroe shares his thoughts on the climate and ecological emergency and what should be happening in Sheffield.

A guest blog by Sam Wakeling Citizens’ Assemblies offer a hopeful, better way of doing politics as Ci Davis recently described in this blog. They can give a vital rebalancing of power, giving control back to citizens. Ours showed where South Yorkshire citizens are ahead of our politicians. For example, we don’t need to be “brought along” to want changes to our streets to make them safe for walking, wheeling and cycling - these were some of the most popular recommendations. ...

Friday's important Defend Our Juries protest outside Southwark Crown Court calling for political prisoners to be released from jail got little press coverage. It is shameful that the media does not cover things like this, which is why this blog was set up in the first place. 320 people occupied the road outside Southwark Crown Court for 90 minutes, including a strong contingent from Sheffield, to protest the ongoing assault on democratic civil rights....

A letter to the Sheffield Star and Sheffield Telegraph Dear Editor Yesterday I went to see the film Shanshula which Sheffield Palestinian Musheir El-Farra produced, at the Broomhall Centre. The film gives a voice to the fishermen and fisherwomen of Gaza. The film begins before the horrors of October 7th. The fishermen and women describe how Israeli forces destroy their nets, and shoot at their boats, sometimes killing or seriously injuring them....

Photo by Erik Mclean. “I’ve passed my driving test!” shouts Charlie as he jumps into his second-hand Porsche and heads for the M1. He wants to put his foot down and see how fast it can go. Soon Charlie notices a red light on the dashboard, but he has no idea what it means not having read the manual. It’ll probably go away soon he thinks to himself....

A guest blog by Ci Davis One hundred people, selected as a representative cross-section of the South Yorkshire population, met between October and December 2023 as members of the South Yorkshire Citizens’ Assembly on Climate Change; I was one of the members.
