The most numerous of the Vanden Plas bodies on the Derby Bentley chassis were the Sports Tourers. These were four-seaters and typically had a somewhat rakish cutaway door top (at least on the driver's side). Weather protection was provided by a folding hood attached to the body and by sidescreens that might also be stowed behind the front seats when not in use.

This 1934 Sports Tourer is on chassis B59BN. The coachwork is long, low and sleek and shows the early style of door cutaway on the Vanden Plas tourer bodies.

The Austin Seven Cabriolet took a few months to catch up with changes made to the parent Saloon range. The ARR Ruby Saloon replaced the ARQ model from August 1936 but its Pearl Cabriolet equivalent, the ACA, did not arrive to replace the AC until January 1937.
Minor changes associated with the ARR models aside, this second version of the Pearl Cabriolet was immediately recognisable by larger rear side windows and the absence of “pram irons” on the folding hood behind them.

This Ferguson TEA20 was the fourth tractor in Mike Thorne's Coldridge Collection. He bought it from a smallholder in Black Torrington, not far from this office. It was in a tidy condition, having done very little hard work. It stood in storage for a few years and was later overhauled by Ernie Luxton, fitted with new Goodyear tyres all round and repainted by Peter Clark, to his usual high standard. At a later date, Mike was able to buy a Cameron Gardner Handy-Loda complete with earth scoop.

It features in Mike's last book, 'The Tractors in my Life' which covers all the tractors in the Coldridge Collection.

Exactly a year after the Mini Cabriolet, in June 1992, Rover launched another open-topped Mini – with some tennis-themed wordplay at work. The British Open Classic (or just ‘British Open’ in certain export markets and indeed Rover’s own UK publicity) was not a full convertible, however, but a ‘canvas top’ edition with a giant sunroof.

1000 examples were sold in the UK and many more were exported. Indeed the British Open was so popular that it became a regular production model in some export markets like France,
Germany and Italy.

From 2010, JE Engineering offered the JE-35 Defender with a 320bhp naturally-aspirated Jaguar Land Rover AJV8 engine, driving through a four-speed ZF automatic gearbox.

This JE-35 conversion was fitted to one of the 60th Anniversary Defender SVX models.

Almost as soon as the MG J2 was in production, examples began appearing in competitive events. A look through surviving chassis files and through programmes and results sheets reveals how high a proportion of the cars built saw some sort of competition use, even if only at weekends in small club events.

This is Doreen Evans driving her J-type Midget, J3280, in the 1934 Colmore Trophy Trial where she gained a second class award.

From the competition section in the J-type chapter of our new book, ‘MG Midgets In Detail’ by Malcolm Green.

This 1958 Jaguar 3.4-litre (Mk 1) is looking good on its original body-coloured wire wheels and and cutaway rear spats. The car was once owned by period racing driver and motoring journalist Paul Frère and now belongs to the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust.

The car was photographed by Simon Clay for our originality guide, 'Factory-Original Jaguar Mk1 & Mk2', which also covers the 240, 340, S-type, 420, Daimler V8 and Sovereign.

Aston Martin built quickly on the success of the original DB4. That car was announced in 1958, and just one year later the company was ready with the DB4 GT. The next stage was to offer an even lighter, special-bodied model, and this was introduced in October 1960 at the Earls Court Motor Show in London.

Aston Martin turned to Zagato, who gave the job to his designer Ercole Spada. Although the basis of the Zagato cars was a standard DB4 GT chassis, all of them had an uprated engine with 314bhp, and were around 100lb (45kg) lighter than the factory’s own DB4 GT thanks to strategic use of perspex and aluminium in the body.

This car was photographed by Simon Clay for our originality guide, 'Factory-Original Aston Martin DB4/5/6'.

An autumnal scene with a launch-model Ford Es**rt Mk3 van in L trim. The L was the equivalent to Ford's former Custom spec. It added silver-coloured wheel centre caps rather than the base-model’s black, plus bodyside rubbing strips, reclining seats with cloth trim, face-level air vents in the dashboard, passenger glovebox, cigarette lighter, dipping rear-view mirror, three-speed heater, full-height door cards with stowage bins, additional sound insulation, carpets in the passenger compartment, intermittent wipers, better handbrake grip, and L badge on the back door.

In 1961, Jaguar – allegedly “Lofty” England – drew up a “Priority List” of eighteen home-market customers, mostly drivers who had raced Jaguars, who were to receive early open two-seater right-hand drive cars.

Chassis Number 850009, registered 898 BYR, was dispatched in July 1961 to racing driver, Peter Sargent. After several races in 1961, including a first place at Brands Hatch on Boxing Day, this steel-bodied car was then modified with aluminium bonnet and a fastback coupé body made by Peels of Kingston. John and Brian Playford prepared the car for Le Mans, including a dry sump engine with a wide-angle head, D-type triple plate clutch and gearbox, and an E-type rear end with a 2.93:1 final drive and incorporating an oil cooler system. It was also fitted with a 140-litre fuel tank.

Shown here at Le Mans in 1962, the gearbox broke after 23 hours. Sargent managed to jam the gear lever into top gear and the car finished fifth. The Porsche Carrera Abarth seen here was seventh.

Tweed grey was a popular colour for Mini commercials. This is a 1962 Austin Pick-up, wearing the optional vinyl load bed cover. A canvas tilt was also optional but was seldom specified in the UK. In fact, during the MkII era, it was listed as an Export option, and not for UK models at all.

This vehicle features in the 'Vans and Pick-ups' chapter of our Mini originality guide, 'Factory-Original Mini MkI and MkII'.

British Rotary Snow Plough Ltd developed a snow blower that could be mounted to the front of a Land Rover and driven by its own independent engine. A demonstrator based on a 107 Station Wagon was used by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and was displayed at an exhibition held at the Rover factory in early 1957. The Land Rover in the pictures still survives – but sadly, without the snowblower.

This is one of the many fascinating conversions featured in our upcoming book, "The Complete Catalogue of Land Rover Conversions & Accessories" by James Taylor.

Very few Bentley 4½-litre supercharged chassis were ordered without the Vanden Plas sports four-seater body, and this was one of them. This was chassis number SM3905, which originally had a fixed-head coupé body by Maythorn. This drophead coupé body was by Knibbs & Parkyn and replaced the original in the 1930s. The car now has a Le Mans replica body and this body was slightly modified and transferred to unblown 4½-litre chassis number HB3408, which in turn now has a Vanden Plas four-seater body.
