Property owners and tenants in the UK are largely in the dark about the future options for heating their homes and many remain unconvinced about the government’s focus in supporting them with the switch to more sustainable heat sources, according to a new survey by Wolseley. The poll suggests a low level of awareness of alternatives to gas and oil-fired boilers, and demonstrates a broad need for improved public clarity and understanding.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s unexpected announcement that the grant available from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme will be increased by 50% from £5000 to £7500 has been presented as a further incentive for consumers to invest in a heat pump, but there are fears that it will do little to encourage market growth without an increase in the scheme’s overall budget.

Use of gas as the main method of heating dropped significantly in UK households last year compared to 2021, according to a recent government survey on home heating habits. The latest Public Attitudes Tracker from DESNZ found gas usage fell from 78% of homes during the winter of 2021 to just 57% last winter.

Installations of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels at UK properties has risen by 40% over the last five years, and by 15% in the last year alone. This is according to analysis of government data by Logic4training, which looked at figures from the Office of National Statistics on the number of solar PV installations in the UK and solar’s contribution to the UK’s energy capacity.

As one of the UK’s fastest growing renewable technologies, PV provides 4.1% of all electricity generated, compared to 0.4% ten years ago.

The Equipment Theft (Prevention) Act bill received Royal Assent on 20 July 2023, meaning it is now an Act of Parliament (law). Tool theft is a persistent issue faced by tradespeople, both those employed within a company and sole-traders. According to a recent survey by Markel Direct, who offer specialist insurance for tradespeople, 57% of those that had their tools stolen suffered a loss of earnings as a result, with 41% of those reporting a loss of over £2500, a significant amount in the current cost of living crisis. This new law could help to reduce the number of these incidents.

Proposed changes include varying the levels of grants available based on the customer’s property type or existing fuel source, and simplifying the qualification process for a heat pump grant by eliminating the need for loft or cavity wall insulation installation beforehand.

Asking CLIENTS: What are the most complained about things tradespeople do? The responses included:

o 33% voted for leaving a mess in their work area and not cleaning up
o 26% voted for showing up late to work.
o 23% voted for raising the price after one was already agreed

Asking TRADESPEOPLE: What are the most complained about things clients do? The responses included:

o 46% voted for clients not paying on time
o 35% voted for clients attempting to reduce the agreed payment
o 33% voted for when client had not cleaned the work area before they arrival
o 25% voted for when clients asked for additional services which was not agreed ahead of time
o 21% voted for when clients lingered around and watched them work
