Have you ever wondered about the unique challenges of church planting in an Anglo-Catholic setting? In the July/August edition of Together, Alan Mordue speaks to John Wallace about his book which discusses the challenges and opportunities of reaching new communities and planting new churches in the Anglo-Catholic tradition, looking at:

📖 The historical and contemporary challenges Anglo-Catholics face with church planting.

🏛️ How Mission-Shaped Church and Fresh Expressions models apply (or don’t) in the Anglo-Catholic context.

📜 Comparisons between Victorian-era and modern Anglo-Catholic churches, and the valuable lessons we can learn.

💡 The essential role of theology in underpinning church work and preventing mission efforts from becoming mere pragmatic exercises.

🔔 The liturgical hurdles and necessary adaptations in new church settings, without compromising on the richness of tradition.

In the May edition, Together Magazine interviewed Rob Parsons from Care for the Family about the challenges facing families today and about his forthcoming book...

The rapid development of technology creates unique challenges for parents today. When is the right time to give your child a smartphone❓

"We realise in Care for the Family that to be any good at all we must have a prophetic edge. So about six or seven years ago I stood on the stage at Spring Harvest and said, ‘We are going to invest in resources over the next decade for emotional well-being for families and children.’ Everything changed with the smartphone. We are the first generation of people of whom it can be truly said, ‘There is no place to hide.’ You can’t go on holiday without getting an email. And it is true with children. When you and I were bullied we could go home where it was safe, but the modern bully will follow them on the bus, into their bedroom, at night under the duvet. We say to parents, ‘Delay as long as possible getting your child a smartphone, and when you do, don’t let them take it to bed at night.' We are working in the area of emotional and digital health with Kathrine Hill, the UK director. Two books I recommend are 'Left to Their Own Devices – Confident Parenting in a World of Screens' and ''. Having said all of that, I don’t think the basics have changed at all. Every society thinks they are facing new things, and they are, to a certain extent. But actually the basics – love, acceptance, boundaries, the power of words, showing faithfulness in the good times and the tough times, not taking yourself too seriously as a parent – these are still applicable today."

In light of the forthcoming General Election, this issue of Together Magazine will explore the dynamic and often complex intersection of faith and the public square. Should Christians get actively involved in politics, simply vote or avoid politics entirely? How should we respond to ungodly leadership? Are there better ways to engage with and pray for our MPs? How can we handle finances in a way that honours God? We have brought together several views and perspectives, as well as helpful resources, to help us make a greater positive impact in society as churches, businesses and individual believers.

FICTION FILES

Up From Dust takes the story of Martha and, while carefully remaining truthful to Bible accounts, tells a story of what might have been in terms of her life.

The joy of Martha’s baby sister Mary’s arrival is destroyed by the loss of her mother, resulting in Martha’s sudden increase in responsibilities as she helps to care for her siblings. Martha struggles to feel noticed or loved – until she meets her father’s new shepherd, Uri. Life is complicated enough without the arrival of the disturbing new Rabbi, Jesus of Nazarath.

Heather Kaufman is a fantastic find in the area of biblical fiction. This book is meticulously, thoughtfully and thoroughly researched, and Kaufman beautifully weaves biblical elements into her storytelling.

What I love about good biblical fiction is that it gives more than a simple new retelling of the Bible stories we know. It brings the reader into them, to walk alongside the people, see what is happening and feel their experiences. At the end of the book there are some insightful author notes, which explain various decisions she made about the telling of her story, with related Bible references.

Up From Dust is the best Bible-times book I’ve read for a very long time. I was totally engrossed in this beautiful and compelling novel, and finished it with a sense of renewed wonder of Bible events.

TRADE NEWS: Long-serving Sales Director Jon Adams is to leave Teal Press Ltd in the spring after 17 years with the company.

Teal Managing Director Alan Sayers paid tribute to Jon, whose time with the company will come to a close at the end of April. “We’re grateful to God for Jon and for his support as a friend and colleague. His impact on the company over the last 17 years can’t be overstated, and we’re thankful for all his hard work and commitment. He leaves with our prayers and best wishes for the future.”

Jon reflected: “I have been privileged to work with the team at Teal Press since 2006. It has been good to see the company grow in that time and I have hugely appreciated the support, friendship and fellowship offered to me by colleagues and customers during those years. It is my intention to work until the end of April this year and cover as much ground as possible selling our Christmas range in those months, as well as working with colleagues to ensure a smooth transition into the future. I will continue to help organise and run CRT24 so for many this will not be goodbye as I will see you at The Hayes in September if not before. It will be sad to leave Teal in so many ways, but also exciting to see what God has in store for me next!”

THE BIG REVIEW
In the January edition of Together magazine, Luke Jeffery reviews 'Joseph: From Dreamer to Deliverer by R.C. Sproul'...

I always love a Christmas meal – it’s usually the largest meal I have in the year. But invariably I need a nap in the afternoon. I feel full, nourished, satisfied, happy… but my stomach needs to work a bit to digest everything, and that takes some time and rest! R.C. Sproul’s books are like spiritual Christmas meals. They are a pleasure to read, packed with flavour and filling, albeit with the occasional ‘Brussels sprouts’ that will divide readers’ opinions! You will leave the book feeling well nourished, but you will also need time to digest everything from the word of God that Sproul leads you to encounter.

In Joseph: From Dreamer to Deliverer, Sproul unpacks the grand interplay between the purposes of God and the actions of men. God clearly speaks to Joseph at a young age, revealing his destiny. It is not just foreknowledge; Joseph’s destiny will be critical for the outwork of God’s promise to Abraham three generations previously. Yet God then seems largely silent, while we see intrigue, deception, false accusation and much more play out in the world, ultimately leading to God’s purposes after all. As Sproul explains, ‘The doctrine of concurrence points to the mysterious way that God governs the affairs of human beings whereby even though we act according to our own desires, choices, and wills, God brings His sovereign will to pass not apart from the choices and actions of people but in, through, and by the work of people. Two streams are flowing – the human stream and the divine stream – but these two merge into one.’

Jacob’s parallel story is a further example. He has had dreams and spiritual experiences – now distant memories. His beloved son had dreams too, but was (apparently) killed, leaving Jacob confused and in mourning for over two decades. Sproul writes, ‘This patriarch who had received the promises of God and the patriarchal blessing was now driven to despair. The hand of providence is invisible. We don’t know what God is doing below the surface of the things that we can perceive with our eyes. Hidden beneath the visible lies the invisible rule of God. It’s hard for us as Christians to trust our lives and our futures to an invisible reign, because things are not always as they appear to be. That’s what it means to “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor. 5:7), because sometimes our sight gives us no hope whatsoever for the future.’

2 Timothy 2:13 says, ‘If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.’ (NKJV) That is what we see in play here – God working out his faithful purposes despite the imperfections and even failing faith of men.
