In the May edition, Together Magazine interviewed Rob Parsons from Care for the Family about the challenges facing families today and about his forthcoming book...
The rapid development of technology creates unique challenges for parents today. When is the right time to give your child a smartphone❓
"We realise in Care for the Family that to be any good at all we must have a prophetic edge. So about six or seven years ago I stood on the stage at Spring Harvest and said, ‘We are going to invest in resources over the next decade for emotional well-being for families and children.’ Everything changed with the smartphone. We are the first generation of people of whom it can be truly said, ‘There is no place to hide.’ You can’t go on holiday without getting an email. And it is true with children. When you and I were bullied we could go home where it was safe, but the modern bully will follow them on the bus, into their bedroom, at night under the duvet. We say to parents, ‘Delay as long as possible getting your child a smartphone, and when you do, don’t let them take it to bed at night.' We are working in the area of emotional and digital health with Kathrine Hill, the UK director. Two books I recommend are 'Left to Their Own Devices – Confident Parenting in a World of Screens' and ''. Having said all of that, I don’t think the basics have changed at all. Every society thinks they are facing new things, and they are, to a certain extent. But actually the basics – love, acceptance, boundaries, the power of words, showing faithfulness in the good times and the tough times, not taking yourself too seriously as a parent – these are still applicable today."
